Purpose: To evaluate changes in the tear meniscus area and tear meniscus height over time in patients withdry eye syndrome, using anterior segment spectral-domain optical coherence tomography after the instillationof 3% diquafosol ophthalmic solution. Methods: Sixty eyes from 30 patients with mild to moderate dry eye syndrome were included. Tear meniscusimages acquired by anterior segment spectral-domain optical coherence tomography were analyzed usingNational Institutes of Health’s image-analysis software (ImageJ 1.44p). Tear meniscus area and tear meniscusheight were measured at baseline, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, and 30 minutes after instillation of a drop of diquafosolin one eye and normal saline in the other eye. Changes in ocular surface disease index score, tear filmbreak-up time, corneal staining score by Oxford schema, and meibomian expressibility were also evaluated atbaseline, and after 1 week and 1 month of a diquafosol daily regimen. Results: Sixty eyes from 30 subjects (mean age, 29.3 years; 8 men and 22 women) were included. In eyes receivingdiquafosol, tear volume was increased at 5 and 10 minutes compared with baseline. It was also higherthan saline instilled eyes at 5, 10, and 30 minutes. Changes in tear volume with respect to baseline were notstatistically different after the use of diquafosol for 1 month. Ocular surface disease index score, tear filmbreak-up time, and Oxford cornea stain score were significantly improved after 1 week and 1 month of dailydiquafosol instillation, but meibomian expressibility did not change. Conclusions: Topical diquafosol ophthalmic solution effectively increased tear volume for up to 30 minutes,compared to normal saline in patients with dry eye syndrome.

It is important to study the activity of drug biotransformation enzymes, because from a pharmacological and therapeutic point of view these enzymes are resposible for eliminating most drugs. Their level is ciritical when deciding the dose regimen. (From a toxicological perspective, the role of these enzymes varies, with some of them being directly responsible for activation of certain chemicals to reactive intermediates with deleterious consequence to the animal.) Experiments were designed to measure in vitro, the activity of drug metabolizing enzymes in liver of Korean native cattle. The microsomal monooxygenase activities were evaluated utilizing specific substrates. The activities of BPDM and TST 6β-hydroxylase were seemed to be high level relatively to other monooxygenzses such as ECOD, EROD and AH. Interestingly, TST 16α-hydroxylase which is a maker enzyme for CYP ⅠLA was not detected in Korean native cattle. These results sugest that Korean native cattle have high contents of CYP IIB1 and CYP IIIA.

혐기성 소화 방식으로 분뇨를 처리하는 무방류식 자연발효화장실의 혐기성 세균을 연구하기 위하여 모형 화장실을 제작 가동하면서 혐기성 소화가 일어나는 발효조의 분뇨를 채취하여 모두 19개의 혐기성 세균 균주를 순수 배양하였다. 이들에 대하여 생화학적 특성을 조사하였으며 이를 기초로 한 표현형적 동정과 이와 동시에 165 rRNA 유전자의 염기서열 분석으로 동정을 실시하였다. 19개의 분리균주 가운데 3개는 분뇨의 주성분인 탄수화물 분해능이 거의 없었으며, 8개는 15℃에서도 생장 가능하였다. 표현형 및 유전자 동정이 모두 실시된 10개의 균주가 동일한 동정 결과가 나타난 것은 하나도 없었다. 유전자 동정 결과 9개가 Low G+C gram-positive bacteria 즉 Bacillus/Clostridium group에 속하였으며 이 가운데 8개가 Enterococcus 속이었다. The model human manure digestion tank without effluent was constructed and operated for studying anaerobic bacteria participating in anaerobic digestion of human manure. A total of 19 anaerobic bacterial pure isolates were obtained from human manure samples in the digestion chamber. Their phenotypic characteristics were examined by various biochemical tests, by which the isolates were identified. In addition. their genotppic identification were carried out by the 16s rDNA base sequence analysis. Three culturable isolates did not ferment carbohydrate compounds which are main constituents of human manure. Eight isolates grew at 15-C. None of ten showed the same identification results by phenotypic and genotypic tests. The 16s rDNA base sequence analyses showed that nine isolates of ten belong to Low G+C gram-positive bacteria, and eight of which belong to genus Enterococcus.

Drug-metabolizing activities of Korean native cattle and swine were investigated from viewpoints of the cytochrome P-450's level, their dependent mixed function oxidase activities, the reactive oxygen species formation and cytosolic enzyme acitivities from each liver homogenates. Level of cytochrome P-450 in the liver microsome of Korean native cattle was $0.28{\pm}0.05nmole/mg$ and that in pigs $0.35{\pm}0.03nmole/mg$. Level of cytochrome $b_5$ of Korean native cattle was $0.24{\pm}0.06nmole/mg$, and that of pigs $0.2{\pm}0.05nmole/mg$, showing no difference between two species. NADPH P-450 reductase were higher in Korean native cattle ($58.3{\pm}5.3nmole/mg/min$) than in pigs ($29.9{\pm}3.8nmole/mg/min$)(p<0.01). The activities of cytochrome P-450 dependent monooxygenases such as ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (cattle, $96.5{\pm}12.5nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $13.6{\pm}2.1nmole/mg/min$), N-benzphetamine N-demethylase (cattle, $5.23{\pm}0.82nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $0.76{\pm}0.3nmole/mg/min$) and aniline hydroxylase (cattle, $0.95{\pm}0.1nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $0.33{\pm}0.08nmole/mg/min$) were much higher in Korean native cattle than in swine(p<0.01). However, the activity of testosterone $7{\alpha}$-hydroxylase was higher in swine ($90.4{\pm}1.2nmole/mg/min$) than cattle (cattle, $32.8{\pm}1.2nmole/mg/min$). Interestingly, testosterone $16{\alpha}$-hydroxylase, a marker enzyme for P-450 IIA was not detected in both animal species. These results suggest that Korean native cattle and pigs have high contents of P-450 IA1 and P-450 IIIA. Total sulfhydryl compound (cattle, $10.3{\pm}1.1nmole/mg$ ; Pigs, $14.5{\pm}1.8nmole/mg$) and glutathione related enzymes except glutathione reductase (cattle, $38.1{\pm}7.9nmole/mg/min$; swine, $22{\pm}3.6nmole/mg/min$) showed higher levels in swine than in Korean native cattle. Superoxide dismutase (cattle, $7.64{\pm}0.84nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $4.47{\pm}0.94nmole/mg/min$) and catalase (cattle, $30.4{\pm}3.7nmole/mg/min$ ; pigs, $17.2{\pm}1.8nmole/mg/min$) were remarkably higher in Korean native cattle than in swine (p<0.05).

『六度集經』은 한문으로 번역된 불경으로 대량의 佛本生 이야기로 구성되어 있다. 『六 度集經』이 지닌 짙은 서사성은 『六度集經』연구의 중요한 구성 부분이다. 특히 고금을 막 론하고 불경 속에 내포되어 있는 서사, 이른바 ‘불경 이야기’는 문학과 밀접한 연관성을 지니 는데 한중 민간 이야기는 불경 이야기의 영향을 깊이 받은 문학 장르 중 하나로 볼 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 한중 고전 민간 이야기에 나타난 ‘잉어 보은’ 유형 이야기, ‘검은 머리 짐승은 거두는 게 아니다’ 유형 이야기, ‘쥐의 사위 삼기’ 유형 이야기, ‘푼돈으로 부자 된다(積少成 多)’ 유형 이야기와 『六度集經』에 수록된 불경 이야기의 비교를 통해 한중 고전 민간 이야 기 속에 내포된 불교적 요소의 연원을 밝히고자 한다. 동시에 각기 다른 문화적 배경하에서 전파된 불경 이야기의 변이 양상을 탐색하고, 동아시아 문학에서 불교가 지닌 중요한 가치를 조명하고자 한다. The Six Paramitas Sutra is a Buddhist scripture translated into Chinese characters and is composed of a large amount of Jataka. The deep narrative of the Six Paramitas Sutra becomes an important part of the study of the Six Paramitas Sutra. In particular, the narrative inherent in the Buddhist scripture, so-called “Buddhist scripture story,” is closely related to literature, regardless of age and age, and the folk story of Korea and China is one of the literary genres deeply influenced by the story of the Buddhist scriptures. This study aims to reveal the origins of the Buddhist elements inherent in the folk stories of the Korean and Chinese classics through the comparison of the stories of the “The Story of Carp”, “The Story of Black Hair Animals”, “The Proposal of Mouse”, “The Story of Making Good Use of Small Money to Become Rich” and the Buddhist scriptures included in the Six Paramitas Sutra. At the same time, it aims to explore the variation of the Buddhist scriptures that spread under different cultural backgrounds and to illuminate the important value of Buddhism in East Asian literature.

불경은 불교문화의 중요한 캐리어며 동방문화의 귀중한 유산으로서 중 국 문학과 한국 문학에 막대한 계발과 주입을 했다. 그중 잡보장경은 문 학성이 뛰어난 이야기 문집이며 중국, 한국, 인도의 문화교류에 심원한 영향을 끼쳤다. 논문은『고려대장경』제30권에 실린 잡보장경의 121개 이야기 속에서 “기로국연(棄老國緣)”, “왕자가 제 살로 부모를 구원한 인 연(王子以肉濟父母緣)”, “부처님의 아우 난타가 부처님의 핍박을 받고 집 을 떠나 도를 얻은 인연(佛弟難陀爲佛所逼家得道行)”, “바라내국의 어떤 장자의 아들이 천신과 함께 왕을 감동하게 해 효도를 한 인연(波羅奈國 有一長者供天神感王行孝緣)”, “사라나 비구가 악생왕에게 고뇌를 당한 인 연(娑羅那比丘爲惡生王所苦腦緣)”, “바사닉왕의 추한 딸 뇌제의 인연(波 斯匿王醜女賴提緣)” 등 사람들의 입에 자주 오르내리는 기이한 착상의 이야기를 통해 중한 민간이야기 및 소설과 인도문화의 연관성을 연구하 고자 한다. 이는 불경과 동방 문학의 연관성을 연구하는데 도움이 되며 문화유산의 계승과 동방의 문화를 널리 알리고 발전시키는데 유리하다. As a main carrier of Buddhist culture and an important oriental cultural heritage,Buddhist scripture gives Chinese literature and Korean literature utmost enlightenments. Zabaozhangjin, a book of stories with enormous literariness, has a considerable hold over the cultural exchanges among China, India and Korea. This paper features some widely loved and strange-imagined stories from Zabaozhangjin which is recorded from volume thirty of Gaoli Tripitaka. By the research on the spreading of Zabaozhangjing, we can explore the link between Sino-Korean folktales and Indian culture. This research is not only beneficial to studying the relationship between Buddhist scripture and Oriental literature, but also to inheriting traditional culture and enlarging the ancient orient culture.

『五卷書』는 비슈누샤르만이라는 바라문 왕이 세 왕자를 가르치기 위해 만든 산스크리 트어 우화·동화집으로 고대 인도 문학의 가장 중요한 걸작 중 하나이다. 단순 우화집이 아닌 당대 인도의 정치철학과 실용적 윤리관을 반영한 고전 작품이며 동물 우화를 통해 인간 사회 의 다양한 윤리적·정치적 문제를 서술하고 철학적 통찰을 제공한다. 그뿐만 아니라 『五卷 書』가 지닌 높은 문학성은 세계의 범문학자와 민속학자, 문학 애호가들의 관심을 끌었는 바 편찬 이후 인도를 넘어 중동, 유럽, 동아시아 등 전 세계적으로 전파되어 영향을 미쳤으며 특히 한국과 중국을 포함한 동아시아의 민간 이야기와도 깊은 관련성을 가지고 있다. 본고에 서는 중국 학자 季羨林이 자이나교의 승려가 편찬한 修飾本을 번역하여 출간한『五卷書』 를 중심으로, 저서에 수록된 ‘바다괴물과 원숭이’, ‘바라문의 꿈’, ‘식인귀, 말도적과 원숭이’, ‘뱀신랑’, ‘범, 원숭이, 뱀과 사람’ 등 이야기들이 한국과 중국에서의 구현 양상 및 자국의 문 화와 지리적 특성 의한 변이 양상을 살피고자 한다.『五卷書』와 한중 민간이야기 관련 연구 는 동아시아 전통문화와 문학을 정확히 이해하고, 동아시아문학의 상호 관련성을 제시하며 세 계비교문학사를 정리하는 데도 의의를 갖고 있다. The Panchatantra is a collection of Sanskrit fables and folktales attributed to the Brahmin scholar Vishnu Sharma, who is said to have compiled it to educate three princes. As one of the most significant masterpieces of ancient Indian literature, it transcends the realm of a mere fable collection, reflecting the political philosophy and practical ethics of its time. Through animal fables, it addresses various ethical and political dilemmas of human society, offering profound philosophical insights. Moreover, the literary excellence of the Panchatantra has captivated scholars, folklorists, and literary enthusiasts worldwide. Since its compilation, the work has spread beyond India, influencing Middle Eastern, European, and East Asian literary traditions, including those of Korea and China. This study focuses on the Panchatantra as translated and published by the Chinese scholar Ji Xianlin, based on an annotated edition compiled by a Jain monk. By examining stories such as The Sea Monster and the Monkey, The Brahmin’s Dream, The Ogre, the Horse Thief, and the Monkey, The Serpent Bridegroom, The Tiger, the Monkey, the Serpent, and the Man, and The Weaver’s Self-Destruction, this paper explores their adaptation in Chinese and Korean contexts, as well as the variations influenced by each culture’s geographical and historical characteristics. Research on the Panchatantra in relation to Chinese and Korean folktales contributes to a more precise understanding of East Asian traditional culture and literature. Furthermore, it highlights the interconnections within East Asian literary traditions and plays a significant role in the broader field of world comparative literature.
A Case of Ocular Myasthenia Gravis Presenting as Double Depressor Palsy

A 65-year-old man who had been experiencing diplopia in front and down gaze for 15 days visited ourhospital. Hypertropia was noted in the patient’s left eye, and limitation of depression was found in theadduction, primary gaze, and abduction. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed no remarkablefindings. Two weeks after the first visit, the patient complained of ptosis in the left eye. An ice test wasperformed and the ptosis was resolved after the test. Then, anti-acetylcholine receptor binding antibodylevels were checked and found to be slightly elevated. We prescribed methylprednisolone per os 24 mg for2 weeks, and his symptoms improved after the 2-week treatment. Five weeks after his first visit, the patientshowed an ortho result in the alternate prism cover test and normal ocular movements. This may be thefirst case in which ocular myasthenia gravis presented as double depressor palsy, and in such cases, thepossibility of ocular myasthenia gravis should be considered to rule out double depressor palsy.
