This study evaluated total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity of randomly selected regular and decaffeinated coffees commercially available in Korea and their protective effects in human hepatic epithelial HepG2 cell line against oxidative stress. All coffees tested exhibited potent antioxidant capacity in chemical systems and, consequently, significant protection of cells from oxidative stress in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. In particular, $H_2O_2$-induced apoptosis as evaluated by annexin V staining and flow cytometry was prevented by coffee extracts, resulting in the enhanced cell viability. Of interest, the content of total phenolics and flavonoids in coffees demonstrated a positive correlation with antioxidant capacity, indicating that the antioxidant capacity of coffees may be attributed to those phytochemicals. In accordance with previous studies, caffeoylquinic acid (CQA) and its derivatives including 3-CQA, 4-CQA, 5-CQA, 3,4-diCQA, 3,5-diCQA, and 4,5-diCQA were identified as phenolic phytochemicals by a reversed-phase HPLC, with 5-CQA being a major component. Taken together, the present study demonstrated protective effects of regular and decaffeinated coffees on cells in vitro against overwhelming oxidative stress due to richness in phenolics, especially CQA and its derivatives. Coffees, regular or decaffeinated, may serve as a good source of health-beneficial phytochemicals in diet.
정책결정에 있어서 Kingdon의 다중흐름모형의 실증적 접근 -한국의 대외원조 정책을 중심으로-

Employing Multiple Streams Model, proposed Kingdon, this research examined the decision-making mechanism regarding budgeting of Korean O.D.A. (Official Development Assistance) policy. Many scholars have recognized Kingdon’s model as an influencing theory as rational model, satisfying model, incremental model, and garbage can model. Especially, the policy stream model has been more prevailing research framework in Korea. However, most of studies, employing his theory, were case-study, since the model was suggested by evidences which were collected from many policy cases. While few research tested the model empirically, Travis and Zahariadis(2002) confirmed statistical possibilities of applications of the theory. In this context, this study tried to probe the stochastic possibilities or significances of the multiple streams model. In addition, we investigated coupling effects in the process of Korean O.D.A. policy decision-making. According to the theory, multiple streams open the policy window after coupling of three streams, and the coupling strongly affects policy decision-making. We confirmed that there are coupling effects of the multiple streams in the policy process. In order to detect the effects, we scrutinized the independent effects of each stream separately from analysis of coupling effects. The findings are that coefficient on the analysis that contained both the multiple streams and the coupling effects is positive and statistically significant. This research has implications that empirical test on the effects of coupling in the policy stream model to extend theoretical and methodological framework of the model.

Artemisia capillaris Thunb. (ACT) is a plant of the sagebrush family and is known as a highly self-sustaining plant. It has been used as a medicine since a long time ago, and it is so effective that it is used as a treatment in many places. It helps skin elasticity, is effective in dieting, and helps to inflammation. ACT was extracted through hot water extraction method. ACT was fermented at 37°C for 24 hours using Lactococcus lactis, Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus delbrueckii. Then, the antioxidant activity was measured using the DPPH and ABTS assays. Samples of fermented ACT were treated in RAW 264.7 cells for 18 hours and then an experiment to measure cellular viability and NO production was conducted. Additionally, western blot and RT-PCR were performed to determine the expression level of anti-inflammatory-related proteins. As a result, it was verified that the fermented ACT has an antioxidant and anti- inflammatory effect. From the above results, we may suggest that fermented ACT has Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It can be used not only as a medicinal herb, but also as part of a functional food.

Objectives

Electrocardiogram (ECG) data are important for the study of cardiovascular disease and adverse drug reactions. Although the development of analytical techniques such as machine learning has improved our ability to extract useful information from ECGs, there is a lack of easily available ECG data for research purposes. We previously published an article on a database of ECG parameters and related clinical data (ECG-ViEW), which we have now updated with additional 12-lead waveform information.

Methods

All ECGs stored in portable document format (PDF) were collected from a tertiary teaching hospital in Korea over a 23-year study period. We developed software which can extract all ECG parameters and waveform information from the ECG reports in PDF format and stored it in a database (meta data) and a text file (raw waveform).

Results

Our database includes all parameters (ventricular rate, PR interval, QRS duration, QT/QTc interval, P-R-T axes, and interpretations) and 12-lead waveforms (for leads I, II, III, aVR, aVL, aVF, V1, V2, V3, V4, V5, and V6) from 1,039,550 ECGs (from 447,445 patients). Demographics, drug exposure data, diagnosis history, and laboratory test results (serum calcium, magnesium, and potassium levels) were also extracted from electronic medical records and linked to the ECG information.

Conclusions

Electrocardiogram information that includes 12 lead waveforms was extracted and transformed into a form that can be analyzed. The description and programming codes in this case report could be a reference for other researchers to build ECG databases using their own local ECG repository.
