This study aims to inquire into the characteristics that appear in young children of Chinese immigrant families during the early bilingual language acquisition process. For the purpose, this study conducted a participatory observation of two 4-year-old children, one male and the other female, and their mothers from Chinese immigrant families. Data was collected between Dec. 6, 2016 and May. 27, 2017, and analyzed through interviews with voice-recording and video-recording with the parents. The results showed that in the early stage of the study, the young children who encountered the mother’s native language found it unfamiliar and showed indifference. Especially, as the mothers increased the willingness to teach their children their native language, the young children also showed negative behaviors such as refusing to learn their mother’s native language. Then, as the mothers tried a more natural and conversational approach with their children, the young children gradually showed interest in their mother’s native language and attempted further expressions. However, it was observed that in spite of the mothers’ continued efforts, the young children experienced both development and stagnation of acquiring their mother’s native language, in that while they listened and understood the mother’s native language, the children had difficulty actively expressing themselves in it. These research results will bring light on analyzing the characteristics of the young children that appear in the early bilingual language acquisition process in immigrant families, and provide basic data for presenting the directions for meaningfully supporting the early bilingual language acquisition for the young children of immigrant families.

This study aimed to examine mother’s experience in the early bilingual acquisition stage of young children in Chinese marriage immigrant families. To this end, the study collected and analyzed data through participatory observations and in-depth interviews of two mothers from Chinese marriage immigrant families and their children. The result found that mothers had excessive expectations for their children’s bilingual acquisition in the early stage of their children’s bilingual acquisition. However, contrary to the mother’s expectations, mothers were faced with conflict due to their children’s indifference and negative reaction to their mother’s native language, but they constantly made efforts for their children’s bilingual acquisition. Watching their children gradually react to their mother’s native language, mothers were able to regain confidence in their children’s bilingual acquisition, and they actively approached their children’s bilingual acquisition while repeating conflicts and expectations depending on the situation. Through the research, the study intended to provide basic data on how to support mothers with young children in the early bilingual acquisition stage in marriage immigrant families.
