Indicators of environmental conditions qualitatively and quantitatively describe the state of the environment and natural resources, and the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) has initiated and suggested AEIs (Agri-Environmental Indicators) to assess trends over time of the effects of agriculture on the environment and the effectiveness and efficiency of agricultural and environmental policy measures since 1990’s. This study aims to develop the state indicators of water quality for agricultural water, surface and groundwater, to evaluate the environmental impacts of agricultural activities and policies by qualifying the environmental levels of a nation. Status indicators were calculated according to the agricultural water quality standards of OECD and Korea, and their trends were analyzed over time. Particularly, nitrate(NO₃-) status indicators of ground water in 2013 were significantly lower than the ones in 2000. Overall, the water quality indicators of surface water in 2013 were higher than the ones in 2012, except for pH and DO. The groundwater quality indicators in 2013 were lower than those of previous years. The optimal management indicators were calculated to assess agricultural surface water and groundwater quality. The findings of this study indicated that the state indicators could play a significant role to establish policies and procedures for managing and conserving water resources. This study also discussed water pollution caused by agricultural and industrial effluents.

The nucleotide sequence contains 2 open reading frames encoding a 45-amino-acid protein homologous to a transcriptional repressor protein CopG, and a 203-amino-acid protein homologous to a replication protein RepB. Putative countertranscribed RNA, a double-strand origin, and a single-strand origin were also identified. A shuttle vector, pUCL2.1, for various lactic acid bacteria (LAB) was constructed on the basis of the pCL2.1 replicon, into which an erythromycin-resistance gene as a marker and Escherichia coli ColE1 replication origin were inserted. pUCL2.1 was introduced into E. coli, Lc. lactis, Lactobacillus (Lb.) plantarum, Lb. paraplantarum, and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. The recombinant LAB maintained traits of transformed plasmid in the absence of selection pressure over 40 generations. Therefore, pUCL2.1 could be used as an E. coli/LAB shuttle vector, which is an essential to engineer recombinant LAB strains that are useful for food fermentations.

Dermatophytes usually infect the keratinised layers of the epidermis, hair follicles and nails. The fungi rarely enter the dermis or subcutaneous fat tissue and very rarely cause deep or subcutaneous dermatophytosis. In general, deep fungal infection develops via two routes: (i) subcutaneous infection caused by direct fungal penetration of the dermis or subcutis following traumatic injury; and (ii) cutaneous fungal involvement by hematogenous or lymphatic spread following the inoculation or infection of another organ (systemic dissemination). After treatment of deep fungal infection in some cases showing a healed scar with atrophy, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The rare pigment deposition was caused due to hemociderin. So we report a case that the lesions improved with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Aims: To investigate long-term mortality depending on the experience and time of previous acute decompensation (AD) and severity of organ failure (OF) in cirrhotic patients with AD Methods: A total of 1252 cirrhotic patients with AD, defined by acute development of overt ascites, hepatic encephalopathy, gastrointestinal bleeding and infection, were prospectively followed up. OF was defined according to the chronic liver failure-sequential organ failure assessment (CLIF-SOFA). The severity of OF was divided into high CLIF-SOFA (□7) and low CLIF-SOFA (<7). We then classified 3 groups according to the experience and time of previous AD as follows: G1, no previous AD; G2, AD one or more years before, G3, AD within a year. Results: During follow-up duration (14.9±10.6 months), the presence of previous AD negatively affected long-term survival in low CLIF-SOFA (82.6% vs 73.0%, P<0.001) and high CLIF-SOFA (54.6% vs 40.4%, P=0.041). Also, in 1009 patients who survived for more than 3 months following AD (ie “long-term survivors”), the presence of previous AD showed similar pattern (low CLIF-SOFA, 85.1% vs 75.1%, P<0.001; high CLIF-SOFA, 80.5% vs 64.0%, P=0.004). In total, G3 patients showed a significantly lower survival rates than G1 and G2 patients, although no significant difference was seen between G1 and G2 patients in low CLIF-SOFA (82.6%, 79.0%, and 65.9%, P<0.001) and high CLIF-SOFA (54.6%, 50.7%, and 33.0%, P=0.003). However, in terms of long-term survivors with high CLIF-SOFA, G2 and G3 patients showed a significantly lower survival rates than G1 (80.5% vs 67.3% and 60.0%, P=0.021 vs P=0.004, respectively) as shown in the figure. Conclusions: Long-term prognosis was related to the severity of OF and the time of previous AD. Especially, for long-term survivors, previous AD was associated with high mortality regardless of the point of experience. This supports the need to decide on proper treatment policy.

Er3+,Yb3+ co-doped CaWO4 polycrystalline powders were prepared by a solid-state reaction and their upconversion (UC) luminescence properties were investigated in detail. Under 980 nm laser excitation, CaWO4 : Er3+,Yb3+powder exhibited green UC emission peaks at 530 and 550 nm, which were due to the transitions of Er3+ (2H11/2)→Er3+(4I15/2) and Er3+ (4S3/2)→Er3+ (4I15/2), respectively. Effects of Li+ tri-doping into CaWO4 : Er3+,Yb3+ were investigated. The introduction of Li+ ions reduced the optimum calcinations temperature about 100 oC by a liquid-phase sintering process and the UC emission intensity was remarkably enhanced by Li+ ions, which could be attributed to the lowering of the symmetry of the crystal field around Er3+ ions.
