Quench Protection System for the Superconducting Coil of the KSTAR Tokamak
Song, Inho,Choi, Changho,Cho, Moohyun Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 2007 IEEE transactions on applied superconductivity Vol.17 No.1

This paper presents two-stage high-power mechanical-thyristor switches developed as 40-kA direct current (dc) circuit breakers for the superconducting coil energy dump system of Korea superconducting Tokamak advanced research (KSTAR). An advanced switching system used in the quench protection should allow multishot mode of operation without maintenance and long lifetime with arcless dc current commutation. The system is designed to combine the advantages of the both mechanical and solid-state power switches. The mechanical stage is to conduct dc current for normal superconducting coil operation and the thyristor stage is to provide fast arcless dc current interruption for quench protection (QP). Compared with the all solid-state switches and vacuum interrupters of equal capabilities the proposed switch is much cheaper than the dc breakers and has lower power dissipation in current conducting state 'Kuchinski in Proc. Power Ele., 899-903, 1995;' 'Benfatto IEEE Power Del., Vol. 3, No. 4, pp. 1372-1376, Oct. 1998.' Also, it is much faster than the vacuum interrupters. The system is designed to break 40-kA dc current within 200 ms. Also, KSTAR device, a configuration of the energy dump system and coil power supplies are presented

With the advancement of artificial intelligence and its various use cases, accessing it through edge computing environments is gaining traction. However, due to the nature of edge computing environments, efficient management and optimization of clusters distributed in different geographical locations is considered a major challenge. To address these issues, this paper proposes a centralization and automation tool called KubEVC-Agent based on Kubernetes. KubEVC-Agent centralizes the deployment, operation, and management of edge clusters and presents a use case of the data transformation for optimizing intra-cluster communication. This paper describes the components of KubEVC-Agent, its working principle, and experimental results to verify its effectiveness.

The global performance of a 15 MW floating offshore wind turbine, a newly designed semisubmersible floating foundation with multiple heave plates by CNOOC, is investigated with two independent turbine-floater-mooring coupled dynamic analysis programs CHARM3D-FAST and OrcaFlex. The semisubmersible platform hosts IEA 15 MW reference wind turbine modulated for VolturnUS-S and hybrid type (chain-wire-chain with clumps) 3×2 mooring lines targeting the water depth of 100 m. The numerical free-decay simulation results are compared with physical experiments with 1:64 scaled model in 3D wave basin, from which appropriate drag coefficients for heave plates were estimated. The tuned numerical simulation tools were then used for the feasibility and global performance analysis of the FOWT considering the 50-yr-storm condition and maximum operational condition. The effect of tower flexibility was investigated by comparing tower-base fore-aft bending moment and nacelle translational accelerations. It is found that the tower-base bending moment and nacelle accelerations can be appreciably increased due to the tower flexibility.
