Post-stroke aggression refers to aggressive behaviors and languages which are occurred after stroke. In stroke patients, over 15% suffer from the anger and the symptom lowers the quality of life of the patients, family, and caregivers. After diagnosing post-stroke aggression, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor(SSRI) and beta-blocker, beta adrenergic agonist treatment usually underwent to treat the anger and anxiety of the patient. In the present case, a 81-year-old female patient with post-stroke aggression underwent Korean medical treatment by Jodeungsan and Ukgansan for 49 days. The effect of the treatment was assessed with State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory(STAXI) per a week, roaming time per a week and roaming frequency per a week. After the treatment, STAXI score, roaming time, and roaming frequecy decreased, and the patient could successfully cease to take beta-blocker, which she started to take for treating her aggression, without any side-effects. This case report suggests that Ukgansan might be an effective option with post-stroke aggression patients taking medication including beta-blocker.

Background : Dioscorea bulbifera (DB) contain steroidal saponin which has anticancer and anti-inflammatory. DB is a health-functional material used as edible and medical materials. However, DB has not been studied in detail as industrial purposes of fermentation. Methods and Results : D. bulbifera (DB) was fermented by Rhizopus oryzae CN105 for 3 days. Samples were prepared by adding 10% honey to the D. bulbifera (DBH) and honey free D. bulbifera (DB). The pH, total acidity (%) and reducing sugar (%) were investigated. The free sugar and color values related to taste components were analyzed. The pH level decreased while total acidity increased during fermentation. The free sugar and color values related to taste components were analyzed. The content of free sugar in the DB was the highest after 3 days of fermentation. In case DBH, only glucose was the highest after 3 days of fermentation. The content of fructose, sucrose and lactose were decrease during fermentation. Total polyphenol content of DB and DBH was measured by the Folin-Denis method. Total flavonoid content was measured by the Moreno method. Total polyphenol content and flavonoid content was the highest after 1 days of fermentation in both DB and DBH. Conclusion : The results showed that physicochemical components improved during fermentation in DB. But antioxidant activity was the highest after 1 days of fermentation in DB and DBH. These results are indicated that fermented DB can be used as a functional food.

Bilateral sequential sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL) is a rare and challenging clini-cal condition, but its association with protein S deficiency has received limited attention. Thispaper reports a case of bilateral sequential SSHL in a patient with protein S deficiency whounderwent cochlear implantation and achieved significant improvement in hearing. The pa-tient received high-dose systemic corticosteroids and anticoagulation therapy before the im-plantation, which had no significant effect. Cochlear implantation was then performed in theleft ear, and the patient showed significant improvement in speech understanding and overallhearing ability. A year later, the patient underwent surgery for the opposite ear with favorableoutcome. This case highlights the potential benefits of cochlear implantation in patients withbilateral sequential SSHL and protein S deficiency and emphasizes the importance of consid-ering cochlear implantation as a treatment option in such patients.

Background and Objectives This study focused on predicting voice outcomes followinghemithyroidectomy using skin electrode intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM). Subjects and Method The study involved 82 patients who underwent hemithyroidectomy. During the surgery, the researchers recorded skin IONM values for the vagus nerve and recur-rent laryngeal nerve. Voice quality evaluations were conducted before the surgery and at vari-ous intervals after the surgery (one week, one month, three months, six months, and one year)using the multidimensional voice program (MDVP), voice handicap index (VHI), and thegrade, roughness, breathiness, asthenia, strain (GRBAS) scale. The study aimed to correlateperioperative skin IONM values with subjective and objective voice outcomes. Results The VHI scores increased up to three months post-surgery, with statistically signifi-cant changes observed at one week post-surgery. The GRBAS scale scores also increased sig-nificantly at one month post-surgery. Similar trends were observed in the MDVP data, includ-ing a decrease in the maximum pitch between one week and three months post-surgery. Additionally, the study found that lower delta-V values (difference between the preoperativeand postoperative signal amplitude of vagus nerve stimulation) were associated with higherF0 values at one week and three months post-surgery, while jitter and noise-to-harmonic ratiowere higher in the group with higher delta-V values at three months post-surgery. Conclusion Greater differences between the preoperative and postoperative signal ampli-tude of vagus nerve stimulation during surgery were linked to worse postoperative voice out-comes. Voice parameters worsened for up to 3 months after hemithyroidectomy but showedsigns of recovery afterwards. These findings offer insights into predicting and managing voiceoutcomes after hemithyroidectomy.
Antioxidant and Cytoprotective Effects of Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) Leaves Phenolic Fraction

Phenolic rich ethyl acetate fraction (EAF) from lotus leaves was prepared and its bioactive components, antioxidant and cytoprotective effects were investigated. EAF showed high total phenolic content and flavonoid content and contained rutin (11,331.3±4.5 mg/100 g EAF), catechin (10,853.8±5.8 mg/100 g EAF), sinapic acid (1,961.3±5.6 mg/100 g EAF), chlorogenic acid (631.9±2.3 mg/100 g EAF), syringic acid (512.3±2.5 mg/100 g EAF), and quercetin (415.0±2.1 mg/100 g EAF). EAF exerted the IC50 of 4.46 mg/mL and 5.35 mg/mL toward DPPH and ABTS cation radicals, respectively, and showed strong reducing power, which was better than that of ascorbic acid, a positive control. Additionally, EAF protected hydroxyl radical-induced DNA damage indicated by the conversion of supercoiled pBR322 plasmid DNA to the open circular form and inhibited lipid peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acid in a linoleic acid emulsion. In cultured hepatocytes, EAF exerted a cytoprotective effect against oxidative stress by inhibiting intracellular reactive oxygen species formation and membrane lipid peroxidation. In addition, depletion of glutathione under oxidative stress was remarkably restored by treatment with EAF. The results suggest that EAF have great potential to be used against oxidative stress-induced health conditions.
