Purpose: This paper explores the optimization problem of determining the position of sensors in a sensor system to cover the service area while considering the system’s reliability. Methods: A simulation and an approximation method are used to estimate the sensor system’s reliability, given the service area, sensing (coverage) radius, and sensor reliability. Three heuristic methods (uniform placement, P-center placement, and a genetic algorithm) are then proposed and compared numerically to determine the sensors’ locations to maximize the system’s reliability. Results: Based on the numerical studies, the genetic algorithm outperformed other methods in determining sensor locations with high reliability. A study was then conducted on the effects of the model parameters on the optimal locations. Conclusion: An optimization problem is studied to determine the optimal locations of sensors in a system for a given service area, sensing (coverage) radius, and sensor reliability. Simulated and approximate methods are used to estimate reliability, and a numerical comparison is conducted between three heuristic methods. The genetic algorithm provided the best results. A sensitivity analysis was conducted to understand the effects of model parameters on the optimal locations.
Radiation Risk and Injury for the Endoscopist during ERCP
손병관 대한췌담도학회 2013 대한췌담도학회지 Vol.18 No.1 Suppl
During endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a high amount of X-ray fluoroscopy and digital radiographs are performed. So personnel performing ERCP are compelled to be exposed to harmful radiation. Published values for radiation exposure to staff during ERCP vary greatly because there are many variables involved in quantifying the amount of radiation each individual endoscopist receives. Chronic exposure to X-ray, in spite of the relative low dose, can lead to potentially unhealthy conditions such as malignancies and genetic defects. Recently, radiation exposure to the eyes seems to be of particular concern because of new evidence regarding the lower threshold for eye damage. Recent publications on eye doses from ERCP have shown that there is potential for high staff doses, particularly if the X-ray tube is positioned over the table (overcouch). Although it is assumed that the cancer incidence for ERCP performing physicians is lower relative to the radiation exposure, biological damage can be expected with chronic exposure to radiation. Therefore, ERCP practitioners should pay more attention to their radiation exposure status and try to minimize the radiation exposure for their own health.

Salmonella species have recently been shown to involve the colon in a fashion resembling ulcerative colitis by radiographic and endoscopic appearance. The presentation of Salmonella colitis is usually similar to that of ulcerative colitis; and often leads to delayed or inappropriate management. Furthermore, Salmonella infection and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can coincide in the same patient. Salmonella colitis in the setting of undiagnosed underlying IBD can present a diagnostic dilemma for the clinician. We report a case of Salmonella colitis in which the radiographic and colonoscopic findings were similar to those of ulcerative colitis.

Allergy skin prick test and intradermal test represent one of the major tools in the diagnosis of IgE- mediated diseases like as atopic asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, food and drug allergy, and insect bite when properly performed. Skin tests are of particular importance in fields such as allergen standardization, pharmacology, and epidemiology. Even if skin tests seem easy to perform, adequate and proper interpretation requires well-trained physicians who can recognize the numerous factors that may modify the results of skin tests.
