[종교 부문] 한국그리스도교의 토착화 관점에서 비추어 본 토마스 머튼의 영성 - “한국 그리스도 사상 연구소”의 지난 30년간 활동을 되돌아보며 -

심상태 몬시뇰을 중심으로 1991년 “한국 그리스도 사상 연구소”가 설립된 이래, 오늘날까지 토착화 및 복음화 활동을 전개하는 가운데, 영성의 토착화를 위하여 토마스 머튼(Thomas Merton, 1915~1968)의 사상을 함께 연구해 왔다. 그 까닭은 토마스 머튼이 트라피스트 봉쇄 수도원에서 관상 생활을 하면서 동양의 신비적 사상을 그리스도교적으로 수용하여 그리스도교 사상과 동양의 종교적 사상을 조화시키고자 애썼고, 종교 다원적인 특성을 지니는 그러한 그의 영성이 다양한 종교 문화 안에서 그리스도교 영성생활을 하는 한국 그리스도인들에게 훌륭한 길잡이가 될 수 있기 때문이다. 지난 30여 년 동안 “한국 그리스도 사상 연구소”에서 발표한 머튼에 관한 논문은 17편이다. 이를 몇 가지 주제별로 분류해 보면, 신비 신학적 관점에서 조명된 논문은 3편이고, 미학적 관점에서 조명된 논문은 2편, 생태 신학적 조명 1편, 종교 심리학적 조명 1편, 동양 사상과의 비교 6편, 성소의 관점 2편, 평화 영성의 관점 1편, 공동체 영성의 관점 1편이다. 이 가운데 영성의 토착화 관점에서 특별히 평가할 수 있는 논문은 머튼의 관상을 연구한 논문 1편과 머튼의 인격을 종교 심리학적으로 연구한 논문 1편, 그리고 머튼의 사상과 머튼의 영성을 비교 종교적인 관점에서 연구한 논문 6편을 들 수 있다. 지금까지 “한국 그리스도 사상 연구소”를 중심으로 영성의 토착화를 지향하며 연구되고 발표된 토마스 머튼에 관한 논문들은 이 연구소가 그동안 다양한 관점에서 조명하여 일구어낸 소중한 영성적 결실이라고 평가할 수 있다. 이제 그러한 결실을 바탕으로 그리스도교 영성이 한국 교회에서 점차 뿌리 깊게 토착화될 것이고, 이를 위하여 장차 머튼의 관상과 불교의 선 혹은 머튼의 신비체험과 동양의 신비주의 등이 체계적으로 비교 연구되는 가운데 조화되어야 할 것이다. 앞으로 과학 기술 문명이 극도로 발달하고 물질 문명이 더없이 풍요롭게 발달한다 할지라도, 과학적 및 물질적으로는 해결 불가한 죽음의 문제와 참된 행복의 문제로 말미암아, 인간의 영성적 갈증은 계속될 것이며, 이 갈증은 신앙의 차원이 아니고서는 결코 해소되지 않을 것이다. 이러한 관점에서 비추어 보아도, 그리스도교 영성의 토착화는 이 시대에 절박하게 요청되는 과제라 하지 않을 수 없고, 토착화의 관점에서 전개되는 토마스 머튼의 영성에 대한 연구는 그러한 영성적 갈증에 대한 일종의 응답이 될 것이다. Since Honorary Mons. Sang-Tae Shim has established the “Korean Christian Thought Institute” in 1991, while going on the evangelization and inculturation, this institute has been specializing on the thoughts of Thomas Merton (1915~1968) for the deeper spiritual inculturation. Because Thomas Merton (1915-1968) has done his best efforts to embrace the Asian Mysticism into Western Christainy, harmonize the Asian Religious Thoughts and Western Christianism, and suggest the best guidance for Korean Christians how to apply the Christian Spirituality to us in the multicultural religious diversity. During the past 30 years, the “Korean Christian Thought Institute” has issued 17 papers on Thomas Merton. Let me categorize those papers into following themes: 3 (on Mysticism), 2 (on Esthetics), 1 (on Ecological Theology), 1 (on Religious Psychology), 6 (on the Comparative studies with Asian Thoughts), 2 (on the vocation), 1 (on the Spirituality of Peace), 1 (on the spiritual sense of community). In terms of inculturation, these papers are drawing our attention for evaluating their contributions: 1 (on the Contemplation of Thomas Merton), 1 (on the Religious Psychological Study of Thomas Merton’s persona), 6 (on the Comparative religious study of His Thoughts and Spirituality). So far, the “Korean Christian Thought Institute” has pursued the inculturation of Christian Spirituality. In that sense, those papers upon specializing the idea of Thomas Merton in various terms/themes beared the abundant spiritual fruits in the Korean Christianity. Now, upon those precious outcomes, I believe in the possibility that the Christian Spirituality could spread deeper root toward the better inculturation. In order to make this goal realize, we need to take a further step to compare systematically Merton’s contemplation with Buddhistic Zen or Merton’s mysticism with Asian Mysticism, etc. Nevertheless, the science and IT could flourish extremely well, the matter of human death and true happiness could not be resolved by scientific, materialistic culture. Moreover, people will not stop yearning for the ‘something-beyond’ with their great spiritual thirst. It is no doubt that the only definite medicine for that desire is our true Christian faith. By that reason, the inculturation of Christian Spirituality is absolutely urgent task in perspective with sign of times. In the same time, various studies on Thomas Merton in viewpoint of inculturation could be a reliable answer to those spiritual needs for the contemporary Korean Christians.

Because some coat colors other than white and yellowish-brown are not accepted by the Jindo dog Standard, this study was conducted investigate population size for pertaining to the coat color of Jindo dogs except white and yellow-brown, the natural monument of korea during 2018. It was investigated, there were 130 black Jindo (four-eyed) dogs, 32 tiger-striped Jindo dogs, 24 black Jindo (all black) dogs , 19 grey (pepper-and-salt) Jindo dogs and 1 spotted Jindo dog in Jindo area. The coat colors Jindo dogs should not be limited to yellow and white in the breed standard, and Jindo dogs should be judged not by their coat color but by their noble characteristics. Such analyses of population size of coat colors Jindo dogs could be applied as important fundamental data for conservation and management of endangered coat colors in Jindo dogs.
