Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

Pilomatricoma was histopathologically diagnosed in a 2.5-year-old male Alaskan malamute. The patient was referred to Chungnam National University, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital with solitary, firm and well-circumscribed mass at shoulder. Grossly, the mass was dome shaped to tumor like and 10 x 8 x 5㎝ in size. Some lesions had gritty or bony consistency and was chalky when sectioned Histopathologic feature included mumerous clusters of tightly arranged, basaloid cells with evenly distributed chromatin and ghost cells were characterized by a central unstained zone. The ghost cells often become calcified and osseous metaplasia was also present.

항암화학요법을 받는 암 환자에 대한 Nucare^R의 영양지지효과

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutritional support with enteral liquid supplement in cancer patients receving chemotherapy for possible benefit in nutritional, immunologic and golbal function of patients. Patients and Methods : From October 1995 to February 1997, 30 advanced cancer patients receving chemotherapy were divided two roups. The Nycare group, in addition to normal diet, Nucare^R enteral supplement was given for 1week right after chemotherapy for the duration of 2 chemotherapy cycles. Control group received only normal diet without parenteral fluid supplement for 2 chemotherapy cycles. Results : Median ages were 53 end 56 years for Nucare group and Contrl group respectively. Performance scores was less than 2 by ECOG scale. All patients were stage Ⅲ or Ⅳ. The physical parameters, such as weight, arm muscle circumference(AMC) and triceps skin fold(TSF) were decreased in both groups after 2 cycles of anticancer therapy. but it was less severe in Nucare group(p<0.05). Serum transferrin was maintained in mild deficit state in Nucare group, whereas it aggravated form mild to moderate deficit in Control group(p<0.05). Serum albumin level increased in Nucare group without statistical significance. but it decreased from normal to mild deficit in Control group. Serum total protein did not change significantly in Nucare group. but in Control group, serum total protein was decreased from 7.24±0.9 to 6.52±0.5(P<0.05). Total lymphocyte count did not change significantly in both groups. Conclusion : This study shows that the nutritional support with Nucare^R was effective in the prevention of nutritional deficit status in patients receving a nticancer chemotherapy.

Acute torsion of the ovary and ovarian mass is a recognized surgical emergency, but rarely has the diagnosis been made preoperatively on the basis of imaging studies. The sonographic findings in 14 cases of surgically proven torsion of the ovary and ovarian mass are described. Mostly cystic ovarian mass, engorged vessel, dilated uterine tube, beak-like echo(torsion site), smooth mass wall thickening an free-fluid collection in cul-de-sac are described. More significant in terms of specificity were the demonstration in 6 cases(42.9%) of the smooth mass wall thickening and in 8 cases(57.1%) of a free fluid in the cul-de-sac. We report the sonographic findings of ovary and ovarian mass torsion that may suggest the preoperative diagnosis of this condition.

북한이탈주민의 외상 후 스트레스 장애와 자연살해세포 활성

Objectives : The objective of this study was to evaluate an association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and altered immunity m North Korean defectors who were more likely to develop medical conditions and other stress-related psychiatric disorders. Methods : Twenty-four North Korean defectors with PTSD and twenty-two controls without PTSD were recruited from the resettlement and training center for North Korean defectors in South Korea. Peripheral T lymphocyte subsets, natural killer(NK) cells, NK cell activity and plasma hormones (ACTH and cortisol) were obtained from all subjects. We also applied the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D) and Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A) for all subjects. Results : We found NK cell activity was relatively lower than number of NK cells in North Korean defectors with PTSD. Subjects with PTSD had higher HAM-D and HAM-A scores than controls. However, there were no statistical differences in ACTH. cortisol, CD3, CD4, CD8, CD4/CD8 ratio, CD19 and CD56 between the two groups. Conclusion : These findings suggest North Korean defectors with PTSD show higher levels of depression, anxiety and impaired or weak immune function in NK cells.

미셀 액체 크로마토그래피에서 페놀류의 분리 최적화

The simultaneous enhancement of separation selectivity with elution strength in micellar liquid chromatography(MLC) is applied to the separation of a mixture of phenols. It was found that better separation of a mixture of phenols can be achived in shorter analysis times with a few initial experiments using hybrid eluents of water-organic solvent-micelles. Although it is limited, a regular change in retention behavior of phenols is observed with the variation of the surfactant concentration and the concentration of organic modifier, which enables a sucessful prediction of retention times. Consequently interpretative optimization such as the iterative regression method is applicable.

관상동맥 질환에서 SDF-1α의 농도

Atherosclerosis is now viewed as an inflammatory disease of the vascular system. Expression of several chemokines, including monocyte chemoattractant protein(MCP)-1, MCP-4, RANTES(regulated on activation normal T-cell expressed and secreted), and interleukin-8(IL-8) are increased in human atherosclerotic plaques compared with normal vessels. They are involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis and plaque rupture by activating and directing leukocytes into the atherosclerotic lesions. However, some are involved in homeostatic functions such as normal leukocyte traffic and growth regulation. SDF-la is a multi-functional cytokine that is involved in myelogenesis, hematopoiesis, angiogenesis and injured gastric mucosal regeneration in the gastric ulcer patient. SDF-la is recently shown to be highly expressed in atherosclerotic plaques and a potent platelet agonist. At least in high concentrations, SDF-la may mediate antiinflammatory and matrix stabilizing effects in unstable angina. Many studies are going on to know the function of SDF-la in coronary artery diseases. I investigated the difference of the plasma level of SDF-la between control group and coronary artery disease group. Total 75 subjects were enrolled. The diagnosis of coronary artery disease was confirmed in all patients by coronary angiography. Control subjects in this study were confirmed normal by coronary angiography. Clinical profile and risk factors were also reviewed. Control subjects in this study were 27 (M=10, F=17). Plasma for the study was collected before the angiography and centrifuged. SDF-la analysis was performed by ELISA. Plasma level of SDF-la is significantly increased in patients with stable angina(n=20) and unstable angina group(n=28) compared with healthy control group(n=27). the risk factors do not influence the plasma level of SDF-la in coronary artery diseases. In this study, plasma level of SDF-la is increased in patients with stable angina and unstable angina groups compared with healthy control group(P<0.05). the risk factors do not influence the plasma level of SDF-la in coronary artery diseases.

In order to observe the quantitative changes in Meissner's tactile corpuscles caused by aging and in different areas, 3×5 ㎟ punch excision specimens in the palm of the right and left hand from the 46 cadavers (male 35, female 11) were collected, sectioned serially, stained by the methylene blue and observed with light microscope and then analyzed a numerical changes in the palm of the right and left hand and in the site 6 and 7 in the palm of the hand. The results are summerized as follows: 1. The mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles in the palm of the right hand was 2.92 per square millimeter and in the palm of the left hand was 5.17. There was appeared the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles in the palm of the hand was greater in the left than in the right. 2. In the site 6, the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles was 3.93 per square millimeter in the age group 21 to 50 years, 2.96 in the 51 to 60 years, 2.52 in the 61 to 83 years. There was a decrease in the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles with increasing age. 3. In the site 7, the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles was 5.51 per square millimeter in the age group 21 to 50 years, 4.98 in the 51 to 60 years, 4.94 in the 61 to 78 years. Also, there was a decrease in the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles with increasing age. 4. In the site 6, the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles in the palm of the right hand was 3.57 per square millimeter in the age group 21 to 50 years, 2.74 in the 61 to 78 years and in the palm of the left hand was 3.07 in the 21 to 60 years, 2.24 in the 61 to 83 years. There was appeared the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles in the site 6 of the palm was greater in the right than in the left. 5. In tie site 7, the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles in the palm of the right hand was 5.12 per square millimeter in the age group 21 to 78 years and in the palm of the left hand was 5.13 in the 21 to 78 years. There was appeared the mean concentration of Meissner's corpuscles in the site 7 of the palm was a little greater in the left than in the right.
