Anti-Inflammatory Effect of By-Products from<i>Haliotis discus hannai</i>in RAW 264.7 Cells

<P>Several reports promoted the potential of shellfish due to their ability to act as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial agents. Pacific abalone,<I>Haliotis discus hannai</I>viscera is, reported to possess bioactivities such as antioxidative stress and anti-inflammatory. In this study, anti-inflammatory potential of mucus-secreting glands from shell-shucking waste of<I>H. discus hannai</I>was evaluated using RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cell model. Results indicated that presence of<I>H. discus hannai</I>mucosubstance by-products (AM) significantly lowered the nitric oxide (NO) production along the expressional suppression of inflammatory mediators such as cytokines TNF-<I>α</I>, IL-1<I>β</I>, and IL-6 and enzymes iNOS and COX-2. Also, AM was shown to increase expression of anti-inflammatory response mediator HO-1. Presence of AM also scavenged the free radicals<I>in vitro</I>. In conclusion, by-products of<I>H. discus hannai</I>are suggested to possess notable anti-inflammatory potential which promotes the possibility of utilization as functional food ingredient.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>In this study, we challenged pyridoxine to mice fed a high‐fat diet (HFD) and investigated the effects of pyridoxine on HFD‐induced phenotypes such as blood glucose, reduction of cell proliferation and neuroblast differentiation in the dentate gyrus using Ki67 and doublecortin (DCX), respectively. Mice were fed a commercially available low‐fat diet (LFD) as control diet or HFD (60% fat) for 8 weeks. After 5 weeks of LFD or HFD treatment, 350 mg/kg pyridoxine was administered for 3 weeks. The administration of pyridoxine significantly decreased body weight in the HFD‐treated group. In addition, there were no significant differences in hepatic histology and pancreatic insulin‐immunoreactive (‐ir) and glucagon‐ir cells of the HFD‐treated group after pyridoxine treatment. In the HFD‐fed group, Ki67‐positive nuclei and DCX‐ir neuroblasts were significantly decreased in the dentate gyrus compared with those in the LFD‐fed mice. However, the administration of pyridoxine significantly increased Ki67‐positive nuclei and DCX‐ir neuroblasts in the dentate gyrus in both LFD‐ and HFD‐fed mice. In addition, the administration of pyridoxine significantly increased the protein levels of glutamic acid decarboxylase 67 (GAD67) and brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the immunoreactivity of phosphorylated cyclic AMP response element binding protein (pCREB) compared with the vehicle‐treated LFD‐ and HFD‐fed mice. In contrast, the administration of pyridoxine significantly decreased HFD‐induced malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the hippocampus. These results showed that pyridoxine supplement reduced the HFD‐induced reduction of cell proliferation and neuroblast differentiation in the dentate gyrus via controlling the levels of GAD67, pCREB, BDNF, and MDA. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.</P>

The pathobiologic process of arterial stenosis following balloon angioplasty continues to be an enigmatic problem in clinical settings. This study investigates the ability of demethoxycurcumin, a curcuminoid isolated from Radix Curcumae, to attenuate balloon injury-induced neointima(NI) formation in the rat carotid artery. It was found that demethoxycurcumin induced inducible heme oxygenase(HO-1) expression and inhibited dose-dependently cellular proliferation in rat vascular smooth muscle cells. Perivascular application of demethoxycurcumin immediately following injury significantly reduced NI area and NI thickness 2 weeks post-injury. Interestingly, treatment with tin-protoporphyrin IX, a HO inhibitor, reversed the effects of demethoxycurcumin on NI formation. These results implicate demethoxycurcumin as a potent new therapeutic agent that is capable of reducing post-angioplasty arterial stenosis through induction of the HO-1 expression.

Based on the opinions of earth science teachers obtained by questionnaire methods(Nov.1983-Feb.1984) and, the analyses of curricula and textbooks (domestic and foreign), 44 laboratory activities for high school earth science were selected as main or important items, among which 21 were proposed as essential ones. Some items were application-tested in the attached high school. Selection was filtered through the seven criteria of selection, two most important ones of which are as follows: laboratory activities should be 1) free of temporal and spatial restrictions, and 2) directed to real objects (earth and universe), not to models, if possible. Domain of concern of earth science was divided by four main fields such as geology, atmospheric science, oceanography and geophysics,and astronomy, so that laboratory activities were grouped accordingly. For 44 items short remarks are tabulated of the methods of implementation, while for ten essential ones detailed description is presented. Situations in high schools and some propositions in relation to the laboratory activities are discussed.

This study is to investigate financial performance at dental clinics from collecting objective data of income and cost. The data were collected from 149 dental clinics by stratified randomized sampling method. The results are as follows; 1. The total income is about 18,050 thousand won on a monthly average, composed of 7,300 thousand won from health insurance payment and 10,620 thousand won from out-of-pocket payment and 1,670 thousand won from uninsured patient or other insurance payment. 2. The total cost is 17,120 thousand won on a monthly average, composed of 9,720 thousand won in labor cost including director's cost, 3,000 thousand won in material cost, and 4,040 thousand won in management cost. The director's labor cost is estimated at 7,310 thousand won. 3. The average dental profit-income ratio is -2.5%. The ratio by region is -26.7% in Seoul, -2.2% in large cities, and 15.1% in small cities or counties or towns. Nowadays income of dental clinics is dependent of out-of-pocket payment, and most cost is composed of fixed cost same as labor and material cost. And the dental profit-income ratio is near by 0%. It means that the average directors in dental clinics make profits equal of labor cost estimated in this study. In the future, the study of comparison of financial performance before and after the opening of medical market will be needed. And we'll be able to use this study as baseline data.
