Direct evanescent coupling between a photonic crystal microcavity and a tapered optical fiber is investigated. The photonic crystal cavity is modified to meet the conditions of efficient modal overlap with the optical fiber. With this modified linear resonator, the coupling strength is increased by a factor of 2.3 and a high-Q of 26,000 is achieved. It is found that 84 % of the photons generated inside the cavity can be funneled into the tapered fiber.

Purpose: In this study, we investigated hospitals in Korea that comprised more than 400 beds and attempted to understand the present state of Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs and below) from 11 different fields (Diabetic education, Wound-Ostomy, Neurology, Neonatal, Cardiovascular, Oncology, Emergency, Organ-transplantation, Renal, Critical care, and Hospice). We also compared and determined the time spent on the role of each nurse from each field and the frequency of implementation for each work activity. Method: This study was conducted from July 2002 to May 2003. Data from 299 nurses that responded to the survey from 57 hospitals were analyzed with descriptive statistics, chi-square test and t-test using SPSS 10.0 program. Result: Out of 299 nurses that responded, 137 nurses from 35 hospitals were officially appointed as advanced practice nurses and assumed the duties of advanced nursing practice. The remainder of the nurses were not suitable to be classified as APNs. From the fields of neurology, cardiovascular and oncology, 25~31 APNs were found respectively, amounting up 63% in total. No APNs were found in the fields of critical care and renal. Mean percentage of time spent on each role was 42.8% for direct practice, 27.7% for education, 13.2% for consultation and coordination, 8.9% for research and 6.5% for administration. Amongst the work activities of all APNs, the activities that were most frequently implemented included reading of examination results, psychosocial assessment, consultation and education for the patients and their families, managing treatment, writing up patient records, history taking, consultation for nursing staff, physical examination and triage. Although not frequently performed, nurses in some fields carried out invasive procedures and prescribed medications or tests. Conclusion: Although the number of APNs are rapidly increasing in hospitals, there is yet confusion with regards to the title and classification of APNs, as well as the distribution of roles. Thus, there is an urgent need to establish a systematic framework as well as standards. Furthermore, because some nurses are prescribing medication for patients as well as performing techniques not traditionally handled by nurses, there is an absolute need for a legalized and systematic education system for the safety of patients who are being cared for by these nurses as well as all APNs.
Influence of Etching Slope on Two-Dimensional Photonic Crystal Slab Resonators

The influence of the etching slope on the Q-factors in two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PhC) slab resonators is studied. The Q-factor of a three-lattice-long modified linear resonator was measured to be much smaller than the theoretical prediction. Through a finite-difference timedomain (FDTD) simulation, we confirmed that the Q-factor decreases with etching slope. The horizontal loss becomes dominant when the angle of the etching slope exceeds one degree. This loss originates from the coupling into propagating TM-like modes.

In photonic bandgap fibers, even when they are designed to be single-moded, multiple higher-order modes can be guided in a short length. To get information on the modal dispersion, we measured the transmission spectrum a wavelengths from 1470 nm to 1650 nm for a short-length (< 1 m), misaligned photonic bandgap fiber. An interference pattern was induced by the interference between each pair of different modes, and we could obtain group-index differences among the modes by using a Fourier analysis. We also calculated the effective refractive index and group refractive index of guided modes in the same fiber by using a finite element method. The result was compared with the experimental data. 단일모드로 설계된 광밴드갭 광섬유일지라도 짧은 진행 거리 내에서는 몇 개의 고차모드가 존재할 수 있다. 이러한 모드들의 분산 특성을 알기 위해서는 일반적으로 긴 길이의 광섬유를 사용하게 되지만 본 연구에서는 1 m 이하의 짧은 거리에서 발생하는 모드 간섭 신호를 통해 분산 특성을 조사하였다. Superluminescent Diode와 스펙트럼 분석기를 이용하여 1470 nm 에서부터 1650 nm 까지의 파장에 따른 모드 간섭 신호를 측정하고 여기에 푸리에 분석법을 적용하여 서로 다른 두 개의 모드 간 군굴절률 차를 도출하였다. 해당 광섬유에 대해 유한요소법으로 유효굴절률과 군굴절률을 구하고, 이 결과를 실험으로 얻어낸 모드 분산 특성과 비교하였다.

The transmission properties of an all-fiber torsional acousto-optic (AO) band-pass filter with asub-nm bandwidth is studied. The device is based on torsional AO coupling in a highly birefringent(HB) optical fiber. The full width at half maximum (FWHM) measured in a conventional band(C-band) is 0.88 nm, which is compared with the theoretical value of 0.45 nm estimated by usingthe coupled mode theory. The line broadening and the spectral asymmetry observed in experimentsare investigated in detail through our theoretical model and full numerical analyses. The influenceof the non-uniformity in the birefringence of the HB fiber on the filter’s transmission is analyzedquantitatively in terms of the change in the filtering bandwidth, the sidelobe asymmetry, and theresonance shift.
