Market Access Approach to Urban Growth

This paper studies urban growth in Korean cities. First, I document that population growth patterns change over time and that the current population distribution supports random urban growth. I confirm two empirical laws—Zipf’s law and Gibrat’s law—both of which hold in the period of 1995-2015, but do not hold in the earlier period of 1975-1995. Second, I find a systematic employment growth pattern of Korean cities in spite of the random population growth. I examine market access effects on employment growth. Market access, a geographical advantage, has a significant influence on urban employment growth. The market access effect is higher in the Seoul metropolitan area than in the rest of the country. This effect is stronger on employment growth in the manufacturing industry compared to employment growth in the service industry. These results are robust with various checks (e.g., different definitions of urban areas). The results here suggest that policymakers should consider geographical characteristics when they make policy decisions with respect to regional development.

Clinical and Radiological Spectrum of Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome

Objective:Symptoms of posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) include headache, altered mental status, visual disturbances, and seizures. Typical radiological features include edema of the parieto-occipital lobes. The purpose of this study is to review the clinical and radiological findings in patients diagnosed with PRES. Methods:All patients diagnosed with PRES between January 2006 and December 2012 were retrospectively included in this study. We reviewed demographic and clinical characteristics, and radiological findings. Results:We identified 16 patients with PRES. The most common clinical presentation was seizure (n = 12, 75%). Clinical recovery occurred in all patients within days (mean, 5.7 ± 4.6 days). Comorbid conditions included hypertension (n = 4, 25%), cytotoxic medications (n = 3, 18.8%), sepsis (n = 4, 25%), malignancy (n = 4, 25%), subarachnoid hemorrhage (n = 1, 6.3%), autoimmune disorders (n = 1, 6.3%) and eclampsia (n = 1, 6.3%). The most commonly involved location was the parieto-occipital lobe (n = 13, 81.3%). Atypical radiological findings included significant basal ganglia involvement in 4 episodes; brainstem in 3, cerebellum in 2, and thalamus in 3. Eleven patients (68.8%) underwent diffusion-weighted imaging and apparent diffusion coefficient mapping. Of those, 9 patients (81.8%) had hypo- or isointensity on diffusion-weighted imaging. On the apparent diffusion coefficient map, 10 patients (90.9%) had hyperintensity, and the other had normal values. Conclusion:We suggest that PRES may occur in patients with complex systemic conditions. The prognosis of PRES is usually benign. Physicians should be aware of certain atypical radiological findings to avoid a delayed diagnosis of PRES, as delayed diagnosis and treatment can result in permanent neurological sequlae.

Growth of uterine myoma to huge size after menopause is very unusual especially when postmenopausal pattern is not on hormone replacement therapy. Recently we experienced 6000g of myoma uteri grown after menopause in 59 year old patient who visited emergency room due to vaginal bleeding for 10 days. After diagnostic work-up to rule out malignancy, she underwent exploration and huge uterine myoma was removed by total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingoopphorectomy. This patient is presented here with brief review of related literatures.

The aim of this study was to compare ultrasonography with video-otoscopy for the evalution of the external ear canal and the tympanum. Fifty dogs with clinical signs of the bilateral ear diseases were examined using otoscopy under general anesthesia. Ultrasonographic examination was performed with an 11 MHz linear-arrary probe and a 6.5 MHz convex probe, with the external ear canal filled with saline. Saline functioned as a contrast media and enhanced image quality of ultrasonography. The images of 100 earsbefore and after the ear cleansing were obtained at otoscopy and ultrasonography. On the video-otoscopic images, the tympanic membrane was identified in 59 ears before the ear cleansing and 91 ears after cleansing. On the ultrasonography, the tympanic membrane was detected in 98 ears before the ear cleansing and in all ears after cleansing. With these results, it was concluded that ultrasonography with infusing saline into the ear canal, could be a useful diagnostic procedure to identify the tympanic membrane in otitis dogs.

Characterization of Two Novel mAbs Recognizing Different Epitopes on CD43

JL1, a specific epitope on CD43, is a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of acute leukemia. Although qualitative assays for detecting leukemia-specific CD43 exist, there is a need to develop quantitative assays for the same. Here, we developed two novel monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), 2C8 and 8E10, recognizing different epitopes on CD43. These clones are capable of pairing with YG5, another mAb against JL1 epitope, because they were selectively obtained using sandwich ELISA. Antigens recognized by 2C8 and 8E10 were confirmed as CD43 by western blotting using the CD43-hFC recombinant protein. When expression on various leukemic cell lines was investigated, 2C8 and 8E10 displayed a disparity in the distribution of the epitope. Enzyme assays revealed that these mAbs recognized a sialic acid-dependent epitope on CD43. Using normal thymus and lymph node paraffin-embedded tissues, we confirmed a difference in the epitopes recognized by the two mAbs that was predicted based on the maturity of the cells in the tissue. In summary, we developed and characterized two mAbs, 2C8 and 8E10, which can be used with YG5 in a sandwich ELISA for detecting leukemia-specific CD43.

Recently, co-operative transmission have gained much attention. In IEEE 802.11 network, wireless transmission intended for a particular destination node can be overheard by other neighbor node. We consider a novel method that is orthogonal to the existing approaches. Instead of following a single routed path, the transmission on each hop is broadcast, where a node farthest in the direction of the destination forwards it. In our proposed scheme, we let an intermediate node interject the frame that is considered to have been lost. the intermediate node transmits the lost frame, quickly resolving the transmission failure. Simulation experiments show that Interject significantly increases network capacity compared to existing algorithm.

상가임대료 인하 세제지원의 경제적 효과: 소상공인 상가임차료에 미친 영향을 중심으로

지난 2020년 3월 코로나19 확산으로 어려움을 겪고 있는 소상공인의 임차료 부담 완화를 위하여 「상가임대료를 인하한 임대사업자에 대한 세액공제」가 신설되어 운영되고 있다. 본 연구는 「상가임대료를 인하한 임대사업자에 대한 세액공제」의 운영 현황을 검토하는 한편, 해당 세액공제 제도가 소상공인 상가임차료에 미친 영향에 대한 실증분석을 수행하였다. 「소상공인실태조사」와 「중소기업실태조사」 자료를 이용하여 이중차분(difference-in-differences)과 1차차분(first-difference) 분석을 수행한 결과 통계적으로 유의한 소상공인 상가임차료 감소 효과는 발견되지 않았다. 이는 10% 미만 수준으로 낮은 제도의 활용도에 기인하는 것으로 짐작되는바, 2020년 소상공인 임차료 감소는 상가임대차 시장의 수요 감소에 의해 설명될 여지가 더 높은 것으로 판단된다. 이러한 분석 결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 향후 국내외 경제적 여건 개선 시 해당 제도를 점진적으로 폐지하거나, 또는 「상가건물 임대차보호법」 제11조(차임 등의 증감청구권)와의 보완성을 강화하는 방향으로 제도를 재설계할 것을 정책당국에 제안하고 있다. In March 2020, the tax credits for commercial property owners reducing rent (hereafter, “rent reduction credit”) were introduced to alleviate the rent burden of small business owners who were struggling due to the spread of COVID-19. This paper studies the current status of the rent reduction credit, and analyzes its impact on the rent burden of small business owners. Using data from the Surveys on Actual State of Small Businesses and SMEs, we perform difference-in-differences and first-difference analysis, and find no statistically significant rent reduction effects for small business owners. This is attributable to the fact that less than 10% of commercial property owners claimed the rent reduction credit. In fact, the rent of small business owners in 2020 decreased compared with that in 2019, which is mainly due to the drop in the demand of commercial property rent market. Based on these findings, this study proposes the gradual abolition of the rent reduction credit. At the same time, the need to improve the effectiveness of Article 11 (Right of Claim for Increase or Decrease of Rent) of the Commercial Building Lease Protection Act is emphasized.
