Clinical Characteristics of Post-COVID-19 Persistent Cough in the Omicron Era

Cough is one of the most common symptoms of acute coronavirus disease 2019, but cough may persist for weeks or months. This study aimed to examine the clinical characteristics of patients with post-coronavirus disease (COVID) persistent cough in the Omicron era. We conducted a pooled analysis comparing 3 different groups: 1) a prospective cohort of post-COVID cough (> 3 weeks; n = 55), 2) a retrospective cohort of post-COVID cough (> 3 weeks; n = 66), and 3) a prospective cohort of non-COVID chronic cough (CC) (> 8 weeks; n = 100). Cough and health status was assessed using patient-reported outcomes (PROs). Outcomes, including PROs and systemic symptoms, were longitudinally evaluated in the prospective post-COVID cough registry participants receiving usual care. A total of 121 patients with post-COVID cough and 100 with non-COVID CC were studied. Baseline cough-specific PRO scores did not significantly differ between post-COVID cough and non-COVID CC groups. There were no significant differences in chest imaging abnormality or lung function between groups. However, the proportions of patients with fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) ≥ 25 ppb were 44.7% in those with post-COVID cough and 22.7% in those with non-COVID CC, which were significantly different. In longitudinal assessment of the post-COVID registry (n = 43), cough-specific PROs, such as cough severity or Leicester Cough Questionnaire (LCQ) scores, significantly improved between visits 1 and 2 (visit interval: median 35 [interquartile range, IQR: 23–58] days). In the LCQ score, 83.3% of the patients showed improvement (change ≥ +1.3), but 7.1% had worsened (≤ −1.3). The number of systemic symptoms was median 4 (IQR: 2–7) at visit 1 but decreased to median 2 (IQR: 0–4) at visit 2. In summary, post-COVID persistent cough was similar in overall clinical characteristics to CC. Current cough guideline-based approaches may be effective in most patients with post-COVID cough. Measurement of FeNO levels may also be useful for cough management.

After the plan to move the administrative functions of the Capital was ruled unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court, the policy was changed and was implemented in a downsized form of moving a few number of administrative organs. However the recent government amendment which nullifies moving of any administrative organ has flamed controversy on all sides. The notion of regional equity reflects the constitutional principle of equality and it is the central idea behind local self-government. Moreover, balanced regional development will help to resolve the increasing disparity between the Greater Metropolitan area and others regions as well as increasing economic and social efficiency. We need to look at the Se-jong city issue in this context. Construction of Se-jong city was first conceived by the Park Jung-Hee regime and hence is not an issue confined to this current administration. Also this policy should not be seen as a mere appeasement to the people of Chung-Cheong province. The validity of the policy should be assessed in the wider principle and context of balanced national development. When in comparing the validity of the original legislation and the government amendment, those in favor of the amendment criticize that the original bill will harm administrative efficiency. However, this is purely a “Seoul-centric” analysis and it is inconsistent with the principle of balanced regional development. The original plan is more efficient on a nationwide scale compared with the amendment. Administrative inefficiency has to be accepted up to a certain degree as a price for balanced regional development and numerous compensative policies can be introduce to minimize the problem. Furthermore, the fact that the original plan already guarantees self-sufficiency of Se-jong as a city makes the claim that the amendment will help to create a self-sufficient city, meaningless. Therefore, the amendment is less satisfactory not only in the context of balanced regional development, but also efficiency-wise. The amendment also has a normative problem. It lacks in democratic legitimacy since there were no proper discussions involving all social voices and there were not enough objective evaluations and analyses. Also it is not in consonance with already existing legislations on balanced national development. The region selected by the amendment does not possess any notable superiority over other regions as a education-science city. Hence it is possible that it is in violation of the consitutional principle of non-discrimination since there is no rational reason for the selection. After examination of the above mentioned rationales, it can be concluded that, without extensive changes and supplementary measures, the amendment is unlikely to pass the National Assembly. If the government retracts the amendment or makes extensive changes to it as to allow part of the executive branch to move to Se-jong, we can expect that the national consensus of the location of the capital city could change as well. Then the customary constitutional principle which makes Seoul the Capital could be overturned by the Constitutional Court and more complete move of the Capital and its administrative functions can be expected to follow.

To perform the safety studies on 3,9-diferuloyl-6-oxopterocarpen (DFO), we accomplished the reverse mutation assay in Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli, in vitro chromosomal aberration assay on Chinese hamster lung cell and in vivo bone marrow micronucleus test in male ICR mice. In the reverse mutation assay, this material treatment at the dose range up to 5,000 ㎍/plate did not induce mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA100, TA1535, TA1537 and in Escherichia coli WP2uvrA-with and without metabolic activation. In the in vitro chromosomal aberration assay, this material did not increase the number of cells having structural or numerical chromosome aberration. In the in vivo bone marrow micronucleus assay, no significant increase in the occurrence of micronucleated polychromatic erythrocytes was observed in male ICR mice administered this material. In conclusion, we suggested that DFO have no genotoxicity in reverse mutation assay, in vitro chromosomal aberration assay and in vivo bone marrow micronucleus test.

‘Danmi’, a sugary rice (Oryza sativa L.), was developed by the Department of Functional Crops, NICS, RDA in 2008. This variety was derived from a cross between ‘Sugary’ a genetic stock of germplasm as a source of sugary endosperm and ‘Seomjinbyeo’ in summer of 1994. The pedigree of ‘Danmi’ is YR16541-14-3-1-2-1-1-3-1-1 which was designated as ‘Milyang 227’ in 2005. Heading date of ‘Danmi’ is August 19, a medium-late maturing ecotype. The total sugar content of ‘Danmi’ was 21.7% with fructose (1.16%), glucose (7.87%), sucrose (9.69%), maltose (0.52%), and raffinose (2.13%), respectively. The appearance of grain is flat shape with 1,000 grain of brown rice is 16.1g. The yield potential of ‘Danmi’ in brown rice is 2.58MT/ha at ordinary fertilizer level of local adaptability test from 2006 to 2008. The sugary rice ‘Danmi’ would be adaptable to the plain paddy field of middle, honam and yeongnam province of Korea.

아밀로스 함량이 다른 진수미와 밀양261호 쌀가루를 첨가하여 제조한 쌀쿠키의 품질특성을 조사하였다. 반죽의 밀도는 진수미를 첨가한 쿠키가 쌀가루 첨가에 따라 감소하였으나 밀양261호는 첨가량에 따른 유의적인 차이는 없었으며, 반죽의 pH는 쌀가루 첨가에 따라 대조구에 비하여 낮은 값을 나타내었다. 쿠키의 수분함량은 쌀가루 함량이 많아짐에 따라 증가하였으며 특히 진수미 첨가 쿠키의 수분함량이 높았으며, 퍼짐성에서는 진수미와 밀양261호 첨가 쿠키 모두 쌀가루를 50% 대체한 쿠키가 대조구보다 유의적으로 높은 퍼짐성을 보였다. 쌀쿠키의 경도는 아밀로스 함량이 높을수록 낮아졌으며, 노화도 측정결과 저장 4일째 밀양261호 첨가쿠키는 30% 이상 첨가 시 경도의 변화가 거의 없어 노화에 큰 영향이 없었다. 관능평가 결과 대조구가 다른 쌀가루 첨가구보다 좋은 결과를 보였으며 쌀가루 함량이 높아질수록 색과 풍미, 경도 등에서 낮은 점수를 보여 쌀가루보다 밀가루의 풍미와 식감을 선호하는 것을 나타내었다. 이와 같은 결과를 통하여 밀양261호가 쌀쿠키 제조에 있어서 좋은 가공적성을 보였으며, 특히 쌀가루가 30% 이상 첨가된 쿠키는 노화에 대한 안정성을 보였다. Physicochemical and sensory characteristics of rice cookies prepared with various levels of amylose content were investigated in this study. Dough pH of Jinsumi and Milyang 261 cookies was decreased by addition of rice flour. Density of dough with 100% substituted Jinsumi flour had the largest value of 1.09 g/㎖, whereas that of Milyang 261 cookies showed no significant difference. Spread ratio of cookies was the largest in the cookies containing Jinsumi, and Milyang 261 constituted the 50% group. Preservation ability of Milyang 261 cookies surpassed above 30%. Lightness of Jinsumi and Milyang 261 cookies increased with increasing rice flour content. The results of our sensory evaluation demonstrated that the control sample was significantly more preferable in terms of overall acceptability compared to others. These results suggest that adding 30% Milyang 261 flour is the best substitution ratio for rice cookies.
청미래 덩굴 뿌리 추출물 투여가 실험동물의 체내 중금속 함량에 미치는 영향

Smilax china L. rhizome extract(SCE), called ``Tobokreung`` in Korean traditional medicine was investigated the influence on heavy metal contents(particularly Pb, Cd, As, and Hg) in Sprague-Dawley rats for 3 weeks. The test groups were divided into 4 group, normal, control, and SCE feeding groups, SC1(13 ㎎/㎏) and SC2(26 ㎎/㎏), respectively. The three group except normal group, were fed heavy metal such as Pb, Cd, As, and Hg. Body weight gain and the weight of target organs (liver and kidney) were determined and had not shown significant differences. Pb, Cd, and As contents in the kidney of SCE feeding groups were tended to decrease after 3 weeks, and SC2 group showed remarkably decrease of them. In the liver, the 3 heavy metal contents except Cd of SC2 group, were decreased rather than that of control group. Pb contents in the serum and the hair of the SC2 group showed significantly decreasing. All the taken together, we investigated the effect of SCE on the 4 heavy metal contents in rats for 3 weeks, and found out that more dosage of SCE made lower heavy metal contents in vivo, for the first time.
