Stevens-Johnson syndrome is an acute mucocutaneous syndrome that is related to drugs and infections. Mycoplasma pneumonias infection is known as one of the causes of Stevens-Johnson syndrome in children and young adults, In Korea, Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is rarely reported as a cause of Stevens-Johnson syndrome in adults. We report a case of Stevens-Johnson syndrome associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia in an adult patient. A 34-years old woman was admitted to our hospital and was diagnosed with mycoplasma pneumonia. At the time of admission, she had hemorrhagic crusts on her lips. On the 2nd day of admission, target lesions also developed on her skin. We diagnosed her disease as Stevens-Johnson syndrome associated with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. She completely recovered from pneumonia and Stevens-Johnson syndrome after treatment with antibiotics and conservative management.

Streptococcus anginosus is a normal flora found in multiple body sites and belongs to the Streptococcus milleri group, It has often been associated with pyogenic infection, such as periodontitis, endocarditis, pulmonary abscess and abdominal or cerebral abscess. Also uncommonly, it can cause osteomyelitis. A 42-year-o1d man was admitted due to gastric ulcer perforation. At 12th hospital day, left humeral osteomyelitis and soft tissue abscess developed, Streptococcus anginosus grew in blood culture, He was treated with intravenous penicillin and surgical debridement of the necrotic tissue which lead to a satisfactory result. We report a rare case of Streptococcus anginosus-induced humeral osteomyelitis and soft tissue abscess.
Evidence for Essential Histidine(s) in γ-Glutamyl Transpeptidase from Rat Kidney

쥐 신장에서 분리한 Υ-glutamyl transpeptidase는 중성 조건하에서 diethyl pyrocarbonate에 의해 빠르게 비활성화 되었으며, 이 반응의 2차 반응속도 상수는 3.8M M^-1S^-1였다. 이 비활성화 반응은 파장 240nm 에서 휴광도의 증가를 초래하며 기질인 glycylglycine의 존재하에서는 비활성화 반응속도가 크게 감소하였다. 또한 반응속도론지 상수 Vm/Km의 수소 이온 농도 효과로부터 이 효소분자의 한 기능적 이온화기의 pK_a가 7.1로 나타났으며 이들 결과들은 diethyl pyrocarbonate에 의해 변형된 가능기는 pK_a가 7.1인 histidine 잔기이며, 이 잔기는 이 효소의 촉매적 기능에 관여되는 것으로 추정된다.

Prunioside A is a unique, highly oxidized monoterpene glycoside isolated from the methanol extract of Spiraea prunifolia var. Simpliciflora's root. The ester derivatives were synthesized from the hydrolyzed compounds of prunioside A by ${\beta}$-glucosidase. The derivatives showed suppressive effects on the generation of nitric oxide in murine machrophage-like RAW 264.7 cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharide and interferon- ${\gamma}$.

Nanozymes, nanomaterials with enzyme-like characteristics, have recently attracted a significant attention due to their potentials to overcome the intrinsic limitations of natural enzymes, such as low stability in harsh conditions (temperature and pH) and relatively high costs for preparation, purification, and storage. In this study, we report a highly efficient colorimetric allergy detection system by employing hierarchically-structured platinum nanoparticles (H-Pt NPs) as peroxidase mimetics. H-Pt NPs were conjugated to an antibody for detecting immunoglobulin E (IgE) analytes, which are the representative markers to diagnose allergy, and successfully integrated into the conventionally used allergy diagnostics, ImmunoCAP diagnostic test (Phadia, Uppsala, Sweden). Using this strategy, total and specific IgE were detected in a 10 min time period at room temperature with high specificity and sensitivity. The high catalytic activity and stability could allow the H-Pt NPs to replace conventional peroxidase-based immunoassay systems as part of new, rapid, robust, and convenient assay systems which can be widely utilized for the identification of clinically important target molecules.
Unusual Allosteric Property of L - alanine Dehydrogenase from Bacillus subtilis

Kinetic studies of L-Alanine dehydrogenase from Bacillus subtilis-catalyzed reactions in the presence of Zn^(2+) were carried out. The substrate (L-alanine) saturation curve is hyperbolic in the absence of the metal ion but it becomes sigmoidal when Zn^(2+) is added to the reaction mixture indicating the positive cooperative binding of the substrate in the presence of zinc ion. The cooperativity of substrate binding depends on the zinc ion concentration: the Hill coefficients (n_H) varied from 1.0 to 1.95 when the zinc ion concentration varied from 0 to 60 μM. The inhibition of AlaDH by Zn^(2+) is reversible and noncompetitive with respect to NAD^+ (K_i = 5.28 × 10^(-5) M). Zn^(2+) itself binds to AlaDH with positive cooperativity and the cooperativity is independent of substrate concentration. The Hill coefficients of substrate biding in the presence of Zn^(2+) are not affected by the enzyme concentration indicating that Zn^(2+) binding does not change the polymerization-depolymerization equilibria of the enzyme. Among other metal ions, Zn^(2+) appears to be a specific reversible inhibitor inducing conformational change through the intersubunit interaction. These results indicate that Zn^(2+) is an allosteric competitive inhibitor and substrate being a non-cooperative per se, excludes the Zn^(2+) from its binding site and thus exhibits positive cooperativity. The allosteric mechanism of AlaDH from Bacillus subtilis is consistent with both MWC and Koshland`s allosteric model.
Addition of α,α-Difluoroiodomethyl Ketones to Alkenes with a Copper Catalyst

The addition reactions of α,α-difluoroiodomethyl n-butyl ketone, α,α-difluoroiodomethyl cyclohexyl ketone,or α,α-difluoroiodomethyl phenyl ketone to alkenes were successfully accomplished in good yields in the presence of copper powder. The reaction was also applicable to alkenes containing a variety of functional groups such as ester, trimethylsilyl, or ether group. Acetonitrile was determined to be the best solvent in the present study and the reaction was performed at 55 oC for 15-22 h. This reaction provides a new, efficient and general method for the synthesis of α,α-difluoro functionalized ketones.

Neonatal listeriosis is not uncommon in Western developed countries, and has significant mortality and morbidity. However, its incidence in Asian countries is relatively low and it has rarely been reported in Korea. Once infected, Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes) can have high mortality and listeriosis in pregnancy may present serious hazards to the fetus and the newborn as sepsis and death through direct infection of the placenta and chorioamnionitis. Because early detection of L. monocytogenes infection is difficult, only high index of suspicion toward this disease can hopefully prompt treatment of this life-threatening perinatal infection. We experienced a case of L. monocytogenes yielded in cultures of blood and amniotic fluid of the newborn and the mother who delivered at 25+1 weeks of gestation because of preterm labor that developed without any specific evidence of infection. We report this case with a brief review of the literature.
