        Background: Patients with ESRD on maintenance hemodialysis are poor responders to clopidogrel. The aim of this study was to assess the functional impact of ticagrelor in end stage renal disease (ESRD) patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. Methods: In a single-center, prospective, randomized, crossover study, 25 ESRD patients on hemodialysis were assigned to receive ticagrelor (180 mg loading, 90 mg twice daily for maintenance dose) or clopidogrel (300 mg loading, 75 mg once daily for maintenance dose) for 14 days, and after a 14-day washout period, crossover treatment assignment for another 14 days. Platelet function was evaluated before and after antiplatelet therapy via light transmittance aggregometry and VerifyNowTM P2Y12 assay, and genotyping was performed for CYP2C19*2 status. Results: Higher inhibition of platelet aggregation (IPA) at both 5 and 20 μmol/L ADP stimuli occurred with ticagrelor than with clopidogrel at 1, 5, and 48 hours, and 2 weeks after loading (Figure). By 5 hours after loading, a greater proportion of patients in the ticagrelor group than in the clopidogrel group achieved IPA >50% (75% versus 12%, respectively, p < 0.05), and IPA >70% (44% versus 0%, respectively, p < 0.05). The rates (slope) of onset and offset of the antiplatelet effect were faster in patients on ticagrelor than on clopidogrel (P<0.05). Regardless of status of CYP2C19*2 allele, the ticagrelor group showed signifi cantly lower P2Y12 reaction units at all times after loading and during maintenance. Conclusions: Ticagrelor achieved more rapid and greater platelet inhibition than clopidogrel did in ESRD patients on hemodialysis.

        Thyroid Hormone Disruption by Water-Accommodated Fractions of Crude Oil and Sediments Affected by the <i>Hebei Spirit</i> Oil Spill in Zebrafish and GH3 Cells

        <P>A crude oil and the coastal sediments that were affected by the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill (HSOS) of Taean, Korea were investigated for thyroid hormone disruption potentials. Water-accommodated fractions (WAFs) of Iranian Heavy crude oil, the major oil type of HSOS, and the porewater or leachate of sediment samples collected along the coast line of Taean were tested for thyroid disruption using developing zebrafish and/or rat pituitary GH3 cells. Major polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their alkylated forms were also measured from the test samples. In zebrafish larvae, significant decreases in whole-body thyroxine (T-4) and triiodothyronine (T-3) levels, along with transcriptional changes of thyroid regulating genes, were observed following 5 day exposure to WAFs. In GH3 cells, transcriptions of thyroid regulating genes were influenced following the exposure to the sediment samples, but the pattern of the regulatory change was different from those observed from the WAFs. Composition of PAHs and their alkylated homologues in the WAFs could partly explain this difference. Our results clearly demonstrate that WAFs of crude oil can disrupt thyroid function of larval zebrafish. Sediment samples also showed thyroid disrupting potentials in the GH3 cell, even several years after the oil spill. Long-term ecosystem consequences of thyroid hormone disruption due to oil spill deserve further investigation.</P>

        New conjugated regular terpolymers based on diketopyrrolopyrrole-benzodithiophene and their application to thin film transistors and polymer solar cells

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Conjugated binary copolymers containing an electron donor (D) and acceptor (A) in the repeating unit have been extensively studied due to their excellent charge transport properties. Moreover, conjugated terpolymers containing a third monomer in addition to the two D and A monomers have been recognized to exhibit finely tuned properties relative to the binary D-A copolymer. Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)–based conjugated regular terpolymers (CRTs) containing two different electron donor monomers were synthesized herein to exploit the advantages of the terpolymer. Two terpolymers were synthesized by using bithiophene and pyrene as third monomers. Compared to the reference copolymer, poly[3-(5-(benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophen-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-bis(2-decyltetradecyl)-6-(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione] (PDPPBDT), the new terpolymers exhibited distinct physical properties, absorption properties, and electronic energy levels. The terpolymers were employed in thin film transistors (TFTs) and polymer solar cells (PSCs) and the device performance was studied. The highest mobility achieved for the TFT devices was close to 1.0 cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>−1</SUP> s<SUP>−1</SUP> and was obtained with the PDPPBTBDT terpolymer film as the active layer, whereas the mobilities of the TFTs employing the PDPPPYBDT and PDPPBDT polymers were relatively low. In contrast with the TFT device results, the PSC fabricated with PDPPPYBDT:PC<SUB>71</SUB>BM showed the highest power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 4.46% due to the relatively high <I>V</I> <SUB>oc</SUB> and <I>J</I> <SUB>sc</SUB>.         Cell Selectivity of Arenicin-1 and Its Derivative with Two Disulfide Bonds

        Antibiotics has become more important in modern health care system. Antimicrobial peptide is one of the attractive candidates for new mechanism of antibiotics. Arenicin-1 (AR-1) is 21-residue antimicrobial peptide isolated from marine polychaeta Arenicola marina with single disulfide bond forming an 18-residue ring [Ovchinnikova, T. V. et al., FEBS Lett. 2004, 577, 209-214]. Our previous study on AR-1 and its linear derivative showed that disulfide bridge and the amphipathic â-sheet structure of the AR-1 play important roles in their biological activities. AR-1 has high antibacterial activity but it also displays hemolytic activity against human red blood cells. In order to develop more potent and more bacterial cell selective peptide, we designed and synthesized a new derivative, AR-1-C (RWCVYAYCRVRGVLCRYRRCW) by substitution of Val8,15 with Cys8,15. AR-1-C has higher antibacterial activity but displayed less hemolytic activity against human red blood cells than the parent AR-1. AR-1 has a two-stranded antiparallel â-sheet structures forming a large and flexible ring while AR-1-C with two disulfide bonds forming a 12-residue ring has higher structural rigidity and higher hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance than AR-1. Peptide rigidity and optimum balance between the hydrophobic and hydrophilic phase in amphipathic â-sheet structure are important in biological activities of arenicin and its derivative.

        Visibility Enhancement of Laccase-Based Time Temperature Integrator Color by Increasing Opacity

        Time-temperature integrators (TTIs) based on aqueous enzyme solutions produce transparent colors which lead to difficulty in distinguishing its color change by naked eye. In this present study, this issue has been solved by increasing the opacity of laccase-based TTI without changes in the kinetics (same zero-order reaction) and temperature dependency (similar Arrhenius activation energy values) of the color change. The opacity was increased by introducing TiO<sub>2</sub>, latex, BaSO<sub>4</sub>, or ZnO, in combination with a hydrocolloid (xanthan gum, acacia gum, pectin, and CMC) into the TTI system. The combination of TiO<sub>2</sub> and xanthan gum was the best. This finding broadened the advantages of laccase-based TTI to more practical uses for consumer convenience.

        Analysis of Causal Mapping between Urban Spatial Characteristics and Large-Scale Fire - Focused on the Relationship between Social, Economic and Environmental Factors of Cities -

        본 연구는 시스템다이내믹스 접근방법을 통해 도시공간 특성으로서 환경적, 경제적, 사회적 요인에 따른 대형화재 발생과 대형화재 피해 확산의 원인을 함께 분석하는 인과지도 모형을 구축하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 본 연구는 도시의 동태성을 보여주는 도시공간의 특성 요인의 변수를 일부 선행 연구를 통해 제한적으로 제시하고 있으나, 경제적 요인과 사회적 혹은 정책적 요인이 대형화재 발생 을 통제할 수 있는 중요한 요인임에도 불구하고 우리 사회의 필연적 사회변화상으로서 도시화 현상 을 반영하는 환경적 요인이 대형화재발생을 가속화하고 있다는 점에서 이를 해결하지 않고는 화재 발생이 대형화재로 확산되는 과정을 대응하기 쉽지 않을 것임을 예측가능하게 한다. 따라서 도시의 환경적 요인에 대한 다양한 변수를 발견하고 이들 간의 인과관계를 규명하여 문제를 해결하기 위한 대응방향을 모색하는 것 또한 화재발생의 사전에 차단하거나 확산을 방지하기 위한 정책이나 기술 만큼이나 중요한 요인으로 다루어질 필요가 있다. Through the system dynamics approach, this study intends to provide basic data for the management of large-scale fires using a causal map that analyzes the impacts of environmental, economic and social factors on the causes of large-scale fires as well as the spread of fire damages in South Korea. Although this study focuses on a limited number of urban spatial characteristics showing urban dynamics according to the previous literature, it predicts difficulty of response to fire spread to a large scale without addressing environmental factors reflecting urbanization as inevitable social changes in modern society, despite the control of economic, social and policy factors. Therefore, the problem-solving strategy based on detecting various environmental factors of cities and identifying causal relationships among the factors needs to be considered as important as policies or technologies to prevent the occurrence or spread of large-scale fires.

        <▼1><P>Herein, a new asymmetric n-type semiconducting molecule (PhITBD) with an indenothiophene core was designed, synthesized using tethering 2-(benzo[<I>c</I>][1,2,5]-thiadiazol-4-ylmethylene)-malononitrile (BM) as terminal groups, and applied to polymer solar cells (PSCs).</P></▼1><▼2><P>Herein, a new asymmetric n-type semiconducting molecule (PhITBD) with an indenothiophene core was designed, synthesized using tethering 2-(benzo[<I>c</I>][1,2,5]-thiadiazol-4-ylmethylene)-malononitrile (BM) as terminal groups, and applied to polymer solar cells (PSCs). The PSCs with asymmetric PhITBD displayed improved power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 6.57% as compared to those with the symmetric molecule IDT-2BM. The higher PCE value of the PhITBD-based PSC was mainly attributed to the enhanced photovoltaic properties, the <I>V</I>oc, <I>J</I>sc, FF induced by complementary light absorption (550–600 nm range), morphological improvement, and balanced charge carrier transport in the active layer. Due to the effective morphological control and absorption enhancement, asymmetric structured n-type-conjugated molecules are potential candidates for improving the performance of bulk heterojunction non-fullerene type PSCs.</P></▼2>

        Quality and Yield Characteristics of Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) Grown at Paddy Field in Spring Season

        This study was conducted to determine the characteristics of quality and yield in potatoes grown at paddy field before rice transplantation during the spring season. Three potato cultivars (‘Jowon’, ‘Haryeong’, and ‘Goun’) were grown in Gangneung (asl 5 m) and Seocheon (asl 20 m). In both locations, weather condition belonged to the fourth zone (spring cropping) in potato production location’s distribution of Korea. Daily mean soil temperature in both the locations was 0.2-0.6℃ lower than air temperature, while soil moisture was adequate level to potato growth in spite of spring drought. TR ratio was not affected by location, but by cultivar. Specific gravity, starch content, dry matter rate, and yield were significantly influenced by location and by cultivar. There was no difference in total tuber number by location, however there was a large gap in marketable tuber yield according to locations and cultivars. There were high negative relationships between yield and main qualities such as dry matter rate and starch content, while high positive correlation was observed between main qualities. It was possible to produce potato before rice transplanting at drained paddy fields located in representative two locations of potato spring cropping and their characteristics in growth and quality were similar to those generally well known in upland cultivation. Paddy field was thought to be more favorable than upland in terms of available soil moisture supply against spring drought. Further research, however, was needed to increase soil temperature and also preliminary review on proper cultivar according to location seemed to be needed for high yield.
