Convex Optimization Algorithms for Active Balancing of Humanoid Robots

<P>We show that a large class of active balancing problems for legged robots can be framed as a second-order cone programming (SOCP) problem, a convex optimization problem for which efficient and numerically robust algorithms exist. We describe this general SOCP balancing framework, show that several existing optimization-based balancing strategies reduce to special cases of this more general formulation, and investigate the computational performance of our SOCP algorithms through simulation studies involving a humanoid model.</P>
Bipartite network analysis of sample-based music

Musical sampling is a composition technique of popular music where one borrows elements from existing recordings to produce new songs. The sampled music is thus deeply related to the newly created music based on it. We can, therefore, surmise that the sampling practice of an artist refects the characteristics of the subgenre or the music community which the artist belongs operates in and belongs to, implying that the sampling relationships can help us understand the origin and evolution of many diferent styles of sample-based music. In this study, we present a complex network analysis of the communities of artists connected via sampling relationships. We establish an artist–sample bipartite network of artists who perform the sampling, and the songs that are the subjects of sampling. The detection of communities composed of artists and songs demonstrates that the sample-based musical scene has a clear community structure where each community features artists with high centrality that allows us to identify the musical styles of the community. While this study focuses on the understanding of sample-based music that forms the basis of an overwhelming majority of contemporary popular musical paradigms, we believe this framework is general enough to be applied to many other creative felds that involve referencing of existing works.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We describe a novel synchronous surface tailoring to form thin and uniform carbon coating layers and simultaneously induce an <I>in-situ</I> phase transition from a layered to spinel-like phase on the surfaces of Li-rich layered oxide (LLOs) particles by the thermal decomposition of 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DN). The Li<SUB>2</SUB>MnO<SUB>3</SUB> component in pristine LLO is not affected during carbon coating, but the coordination numbers of the Co ions and the CoO bonds in the LiT<SUB>M</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> phase are diminished during carbon coating, implying that the formation of a spinel-like phase in LLO after carbon coating begins at the LiT<SUB>M</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> with little variation in the Li<SUB>2</SUB>MnO<SUB>3</SUB>. As a result, the optimized DN (0.2 wt%)-coated LLO cathode material shows superb electrochemical properties owing to the formation of uniform carbon coating layers and the layered-to spinel-phase transition on the surfaces of the LLO particles, which improves the surface stability, electronic conductivity, and Li-ion kinetics in the LLO.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A novel 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DN)-coated Li-rich layered oxide was developed. </LI> <LI> Thin and uniform surface carbon layers were formed by the thermal decomposition of DN. </LI> <LI> An <I>in-situ</I> phase transition from a layered to spinel-like phase was observed on the surface. </LI> <LI> The synchronous surface tailoring improved the kinetics and surface stability of the cathode. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
PP/MWCNT 나노복합재료의 물성에 미치는 마스터 배치의 영향에 관한 연구

Polypropylene/multi-walled carbon nanotube(PP/MWCNT) 나노복합재료를 제조할 때 마스터 배치(MB)의 사용 효과에 대하여 고찰하였다. PP와 MWCNT를 한 번에 압출하여 제조한 나노복합재료와 PP에 고농도의 MWCNT를 혼합하여 MB를 제조한 후 여기에 PP를 혼합하는 두 단계의 압출을 통하여 제조한 나노복합재료를 비교하였다. 두 단계로 압출하는 것이 한 단계의 압출보다 MWCNT의 분산이 우수하고 높은 기계적 강도 및 전기적 특성을 보임을 알 수 있었다. 또한 MB 제조 시 MWCNT와 동일한 양의 PP-g-MA(maleic anhydride grafted PP)를 첨가하여 만든 MB를 사용하면 더욱 우수한 물성을 가진 나노복합재료를 얻을 수 있었다. 이는 극성이 낮은 PP에 극성이 높은 PP-g-MA를 혼합함으로써 MWCNT와의 친화성을 높이기 때문인 것으로 분석되었다. MB 제조 시 사용되는 PP의 점도가 낮을수록 균일한 MWCNT의 분산을 얻을 수 있었고 기계적 물성 및 전기 전도도가 증가하였다. Effect of masterbatch (MB) on the properties of polypropylene/multi-walled carbon nanotube (PP/MWCNT) nanocomposites was studied. Nanocomposites with same compositions but different fabrication protocols were compared. In one-step mixing protocol, PP and MWCNT were compounded at once. In two-step mixing protocol, MB was first prepared from PP and high concentration of MWCNT and followed by subsequent dilution process with additional PP and MB. It was found that two-step protocol using MB enhanced the dispersion of MWCNTs and consequently mechanical and electrical properties were improved. When the MB was fabricated by PP, MWCNT and polypropylene-g-maleic anhydride (PP-g-MA), the properties of resulting nanocomposites were higher than those without PP-g-MA. This is attributed to increased affinity between matrix polymer and MWCNT due to the increased polarity of matrix polymer by incorporation of PP-g-MA. When PP of lower viscosity was used for the MB, the dispersion of MWCNT was much enhanced and the mechanical and electrical properties were also increased.

PDF에는 일반 문서 및 문자, 도형 그림, 글꼴 등을 포함할 수 있으며, 동일한 문서를 컴퓨터 운영체제와 관계없이 모니터, 프린터 등의 출력 장치로 같은 모습으로 출력하기 위한 목적으로 개발되었다. 현재 거의 모든 운영체제에서 PDF 문서를 읽거나 인쇄할 수 있으며, 온라인 및 오프라인 환경에서도 쉽게 PDF 문서를 공유할 수 있으며, 보안성이 높아 공공기관, 연구소 등에서 자료를 배포할 때 많이 사용되고 있다. XML은 사람이 쉽게 읽을 수 있고 컴퓨터와 같은 기계가 쉽게 판독할 수 있는 형식으로 부호화된 문서를 작성하기 위한 일련의 규칙을 정의하는 데 사용하는 마크업 언어로서 W3C에서 정의하였다. 현재 XML은 인터넷 상에서 데이터를 표현하거나 교환, 저장, 검색할 때 가장 널리 쓰이고 있다. 본 논문에서는 PDF 문서를 인터넷 상에서 쉽게 활용하도록 도와주며, XML 데이터 처리가 가능한 응용 프로그램에서 PDF 문서를 활용할 때 쉽게 사용할 수 있도록 도와주는 PDF–to-XML 변환 소프트웨어를 구현하였다.

Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) protein is a Ca2+-permeable non-selective cation channel known for its pain modulation pathway. In a previous study, it was discovered that a triple-transgenic Alzheimer’s disease (AD) mouse model (3xTg-AD+/+) has anti-AD effects. The expression of proteins in the brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)/cAMP response element binding protein (CREB) pathway in a 3xTg-AD/TRPV1 transgenic mice model was investigated to better understand the AD regulatory effect of TRPV1 deficiency. The results show that TRPV1 deficiency leads to CREB activation by increasing BDNF levels and promoting phosphorylation of tyrosine receptor kinase B (TrkB), extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), protein kinase B (Akt), and CREB in the hippocampus. Additionally, TRPV1 deficiency-induced CREB activation increases the antiapoptotic factor B-cell lymphoma 2 (Bcl-2) gene, which consequently downregulates Bcl-2-associated X (Bax) expression and decreases cleaved caspase-3 and cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), which leads to the prevention of hippocampal apoptosis. In conclusion, TRPV1 deficiency exhibits neuroprotective effects by preventing apoptosis through the BDNF/CREB signal transduction pathway in the hippocampus of 3xTg-AD mice.
