Potassium alum과 비우식성 감미료의 병용이 Streptococcus mutans의 성장에 미치는 영향

Traditionally, Koreans have used potassium alum by mouth rinse when they suffered from stomatitis. This study was carried out to investigate the combined effect of potassium alum with aspartame, sorbitol and xylitol on the growth of Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans). The relative growth ratio of S. mutans JC-2 cultured at different concentrations of potassium alum and different concentrations of aspartame, sorbitol and xylitol was examined. The combined effect of different concentrations of potassium alum with 0.5% and 10.0% of aspartame, sorbitol and xylitol was examined. The lowest minimum inhibitory concentration of potassium alum was 5.0mg/ml against S. mutans JC-2. The relative growth ratio of potassium alum on S. mum JC-2 was affected at the concentration of 2.0mg/ml. The growth of S. mutans JC-2 decreased at the concentration of 10.0% of aspartame and sorbitol. Also, a combination of potassium alum and sugar substitutes was more effective against S. mum than the use of one sugar substitute alone. The inhibitory effect of potassium alum and sugar substitutes on S. mutans may be an important mechanism of caries prevention by potassium alum.

우리나라에서 2019년에 목탄 가공과정 중 발생하는 부산물은 연간 174,120 톤 발생하였다. 목탄은 넓은 비표면적으로 인하여 오염물질 흡착능력이 뛰어난 친환경물질로 알려져 있다. 인산석고는 인광석에 포함된 인산을 황산으로 추출하여 인산을 생산할 때 발생되는 부산물로서 우리나라의 비료 공장에는 남해화학 부지에 2천만 톤 이상 야적되어 있으며, 세계적으로 매년 1~3억 톤이 발생되고 있다. 인산석고 중 황산이온은 중금속이온과 결합하여 식물체의 중금속 흡수를 제한할 수 있다. 본 연구는 목탄부산물(Woody biochar, WB)과 인산석고(Phosphogypsum, PG)를 중금속 흡착제로 활용하기 위하여 수행하였다. 이를 위하여 Pb 수용액(100, 200, 500, 1000, 2000 mg L<SUP>⁻1</SUP>) 50mL에 부산물 0.05 g을 넣고 25℃에서 24시간 진탕 후 수용액의 농도 변화를 Langmuir와 Freundlich 등온흡착식에 적용하여 흡착특성을 조사하였다. WB는 Pb 농도 200 mg L<SUP>⁻1</SUP>까지는 100% 제거율을 보였으나 Pb 농도 500, 1000, 2000 mg L<SUP>⁻1</SUP>에서는 각각 76.20%, 66.30%, 54.16%의 제거율을 보였다. PG는 Pb 농도 100 mg L<SUP>⁻1</SUP>에서는 86.98% 제거율을 보였고 Pb 농도 1000 mg L<SUP>⁻1</SUP>까지는 95% 이상의 제거율을 보였으나 Pb 농도 2000 mg L<SUP>⁻1</SUP> 에서는 59.4%로 제거율이 감소하였다. Pb 농도변화를 Langmuir 등온흡착식에 적용한 결과 WB와 PG의 Pb 최대흡착량은 각각 1111.11 mg g<SUP>⁻1</SUP>, 1250 mg g<SUP>⁻1</SUP>이었다. 한편 Pb 농도변화를 Freundlich 등온흡착식에 적용한 결과 1/n 값이 각각 0.91, 0.67로 나타나 PG가 WB보다 더 높은 Pb 흡착능을 보였다. 따라서 두 부산물은 Pb 흡착제로의 활용 가능성이 높을 것으로 판단된다.
자동화유방초음파 검사시 부위별 gel pad 부착 전후의 통증 평가

목적 : 자동화 유방초음파 검사시 기존 검사에 비해 환자의 통증을 경감시키고자 검사를 시행하고 평가하였다. 대상 및 방법 : 2013년 6월부터 2013년 8월까지 유방외과에 조직검사를 위해 내원했던 환자들 중 유방의 병변부가 피부 가까이에 만져지거나, 유두하인 경우의 환자(115명, 47.7세)를 대상으로 AWUS를 동의서 작성 후 시행했다. 검사는 Anterior-posterior, Lateral, Medial 3방향에서 시행하고, 이후 Gel pad를 부착하여 병변부위만 한번 더 시행하여 검사의 영상을 평가하고, 환자통증을 수치화 하여 통증경감과 검사시 불편했던 사항을 환자와 검사자에게 조사하였다. 결과 : 환자의 통증경감을 나이대별, 유방실질별, 병리학적 검사결과별, 불편했던 부위별, 검사시 자세잡기 어려웠던 해부학적 인자별로 조사하였다. 환자의 객관적 인자로 인한 부착전후 통증경감은 나이대별(40미만, 40이상 50미만, 50이상)에서 P-value 0.001미만, 유방실질별(지방형 유방, 치밀 유방)에서 P-value 0.001미만, 병리학적 검사결과별(고위험, 중위험, 저위험)에서 P-value 0.001이하로 분석되었다. 환자․검사자 주관적 인자로 인한 부착 전후 통증경감은 불편했던 부위별(유두․유륜, 병변, 흉골, 유방전체, 늑골, 어깨)에서 어깨부위를 제외한 P-value 0.02이하, 검사시 자세잡기 어려웠던 해부학적 인자별(크기가 큰 흉곽, 크기가 작은 흉곽, 피부탄력도가 낮은 피부, 피부탄력도가 높은 피부, 마른 체구, 뚱뚱한 체구)에서 P-value 0.05이하로 분석되었다. 전체적인 Gel pad 부착전 평균검사통증 수치는 5.10, 부착후 평균검사통증 수치는 2.73으로 46.5% 경감되어 P-value가 0.001미만이었다. 결론 : 부위별 어깨부위를 제외한 나머지 통계에서 Gel pad를 이용한 검사는 비교적 통증경감에 유의하다. 하지만 병변의 정보 평가가 필요하며, 검사자의 숙련성이 요구되고, 통증경감에 따른 기대효과와 손익적인 측면이 고려되어야 할 것으로 사료된다. Purpose: This examination was conducted and evaluated in order to reduce pain in patients during the automated whole breast ultrasound compared to other existing examination methods. Materials and Methods: After the subjects filled out the consent forms, AWUS was conducted with subjects (115 patients, Mean age: 47.7) who visited the breast center for biopsy between June and August 2013 and who had palpable lesions near the skins of their breasts or subareolar lesions. The examination was conducted in 3 directions (Anterior-posterior, Lateral, Medial) after which the examination was repeated for only the lesion with gel pad applied. By evaluating the images from the examination and quantifying the pain experienced by the patients, pain relief and any inconvenience or discomfort during the examination were studied from the patients and technologist. Results: The pain relief in patients was investigated according to age, breast density, pathological examination results, region of discomfort and anatomical factors regarding difficult body positions during the examination. The P-values for the pain relief after gel pad application in consideration of the objective factors of the patients were analyzed to be as follows: below 0.001 for age group (below 40 y.o., 40 y.o. or older, below 50 y.o., 50 y.o. or older), below 0.001 for breast parenchyma types (fatty breast, dense breast), and 0.001 or below for pathological examination results (high risk, mid-risk, low risk). The P-values for the pain relief after gel pad application in consideration of the subjective factors of the patients and technologist were analyzed to be as follows: 0.02 or below for regions of discomfort (nipple/areola, lesion, sternum, whole breast, ribs, shoulder) except in case of shoulder region, and 0.05 or below for the anatomical factors regarding difficult body positions during the examination (large thorax, small thorax, skin with low elasticity, skin with high elasticity, thin physique, fat physique). In general, the average pain from examination was 5.10 before gel pad application, which decreased by 4.65% to 2.73 after application. The resulting P-value was below 0.001. Conclusion: The examination using gel pad is relatively significant in pain relief according to the statistics except in case of the shoulder region. However, it is considered that the evaluation of the information on the lesion would be needed, trained skills of the technologist are required, and profit/loss aspect and expected effects from pain relief must be reviewed.

Allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis are heterogeneous diseases characterized by multiple symptoms and phenotypes. Recent advancements in genetic study enabled us to identify disease associated genetic factors. Numerous genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have revealed multiple associated loci for allergic diseases. However, the majority of previous studies have been conducted in populations of European ancestry. Moreover, the associations of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with allergic diseases have not been studied amongst the large-scale general Korean population. Herein, we performed the replication study to validate the previous variants, known to be associated with allergic diseases, in the Korean population. In this study, we categorized three allergic related phenotypes, one allergy and two asthma related phenotypes, based on self-reports of physician diagnosis and their symptoms from 8,842 samples. As a result, we found nominally significant associations of 6 SNPs with at least one allergic related phenotype in the Korean population. [BMB reports 2012; 45(5): 305-310]

Artemisia lavandulaefolia has been utilized in traditional medicines for the treatment of several diseases. In this study, we attempted to determine whether the essential oil and 1,8-cineole of A. lavandulaefolia induce apoptosis in KB cells. The oil and 1,8-cineole induced the cell death of KB cells as evidenced by the increased cell population in the sub-G1 phase, the appearance of condensed and/or fragmented nuclei, and the generation of a cleaved PARP product. The treatment of the cells with the oil also induced changes in the mitochondrial level of Bcl-2 and Bax, thereby inducing the release of cytochrome c into the cytosol. Furthermore, the oil increased the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), c-jun N-terminal kinase, and p38 MAPK, but 1,8-cineole activated pp38 and pJNK at the same concentrations. These findings show that the mitochondrial and MAPKs pathways might be involved in the oil-induced apoptosis,and may enhance our current understanding of the anticancer functions of the oil to a greater degree than 1,8-cineole.

<P>An oral toxicity study of several pregnancy category X drugs was performed in female ICR mice. The drugs were administered orally once daily for 3 days at doses of 1, 10 and 100 μg/kg for isotretinoin; 6.7, 67 and 670 μg/kg for misoprostol; 83, 830 and 8,300 μg/kg for methotrexate; 3.3, 33 and 330 μg/kg for mifepristone; and 25, 250 and 2,500 μg/kg for levonorgestrel. During the test period, clinical signs, mortality, body weight, hematology, serum biochemistry and necropsy findings were examined. Following administration of methotrexate at 8,300 μg/kg, a number of animals exhibited decreased spontaneous activity, and one animal died. In the hematological analysis, compared with those treated with the control, the animals treated with the drugs exhibited similar significant decreases in the number of granulocytes and granulocyte differentiation, and increases in lymphocyte differentiation. In the serum biochemical analysis, animals receiving high doses of the five drugs demonstrated significant changes in uric acid, glucose, alkaline phosphatase, total bilirubin, lipase, total cholesterol and calcium. At necropsy, intestinal redness was frequently observed in animals that received the high dose of methotrexate. Uterus enlargement and ovary dropsy were also detected in the groups receiving mifepristone and levonorgestrel. Despite the short-term exposure, these drugs exhibited significant side effects, including white blood cell toxicity, in the mouse model. Category X drugs can be traded illegally via the internet for the purpose of early pregnancy termination. Thus, illegal abuse of the drugs should be further discouraged to protect mothers.</P>

In recent years, low impact development (LID) has emerged as an effective approach to control stormwater in an urban area, and watershed and stormwater managers need modeling tools to evaluate alternative plans for controlling stormwater. This study illustrates how to design and evaluate the effect of non-point pollutant management using SUSTAIN which is developed by USEPA. SUSTAIN can provide evaluating, electing, and placing LID facilities in an urban catchment based on user-defined cost-effectiveness criteria. Also, this paper suggests a minimal methodology for estimating model parameters for modeling an ungauged urban catchment to reflect the situation of typical Korean urban interested catchments which are usually ungauged. In addition, the optimal length of various LID facilities anf the optimal number of units our test catchment are estimated.
