<P>The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) classification system and the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score in predicting the severity of the systemic inflammatory response in living-donor liver transplantation patients. Recipients of liver graft were allocated to a recipient group (n = 39) and healthy donors to a donor group (n = 42). The association between the CTP classification, the MELD scores and perioperative cytokine concentrations in the recipient group was evaluated. The pro-inflammatory cytokines measured included interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α; the anti-inflammatory cytokines measured included IL-10 and IL-4. Cytokine concentrations were quantified using sandwich enzyme-linked immunoassays. The IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-10 concentrations in the recipient group were significantly higher than those in healthy donor group patients. All preoperative cytokine levels, except IL-6, increased in relation to the severity of liver disease, as measured by the CTP classification. Additionally, all cytokine levels, except IL-6, were significantly correlated preoperatively with MELD scores. However, the correlations diminished during the intraoperative period. The CTP classification and the MELD score are equally reliable in predicting the severity of the systemic inflammatory response, but only during the preoperative period.</P>

Bloomless cucumber fruits are commercially produced by grafting onto the pumpkin stocks (Cucurbita moschata ) to restricted silicon (SiO₂) absorption. Inhibition of silicon absorption in bloomless stocks is conferred by a mutant allele of the CmLsi1 homologous to Lsi1 in rice. In this study, we characterized the Lsi1 homologs in pumpkin (C. moschata ) and its coldtolerant wild relative C. ficifolia (‘Heukjong’) in order to develop a DNA marker for selecting a bloomless trait and to establish the molecular basis for breeding bloomless stock cultivars of C. ficifolia . A Cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence (CAPS) marker (CM1-CAPS) was designed based on a non-sysnonymous single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP, C>T) of the CmLsi1 mutant-type allele, and its applicability for Marker-assisted selection (MAS) was confirmed by evaluating three bloom and five bloomless pumpkin stock cultivars. Quantitative RT-PCR of the CmLsi1 for these stock cultivers implied that expression level of the CmLsi1 gene does not appear to be associated with the bloom/bloomless trait and may differ depending on plant species and tissues. A full length cDNA of the Lsi1 homolog [named CfLsi1 (B⁺)] of ‘Heukjong’ (C. ficifolia ), was cloned and sequence comparison between CmLsi1 (B⁺) and CfLsi1 (B⁺) revealed that there exists total 24 SNPs, of which three were non-synonymous. Phylogenetic analysis of CfLsi1 (B⁺) and Lsi1 homologs further revealed that CfLsi1 (B⁺) is closesly related to Nodulin 26-like intrinsic proteins (NIPs) and most similar to CpNIP1 of C. pepo than C. moschata.

The methanol extract of Rhododendron mucronulatum for. albiflorum (RMFA) stems inhibited aldose reductase (AR) activity. The RMFA fractions obtained by stepwise extraction with solvents of different polarity were tested for AR inhibition in vitro using the lens of a rat. Among them, the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fraction inhibited AR more than the other fractions. Quercetin (1) from the EtOAc fraction showed a high AR inhibition with IC<sub>50</sub> of 2.11 μM. The stems of RMFA contained the highest amount (5.12 mg/g extract) of quercetin. Our results suggest that RMFA, which contained quercetin, could be a useful material for the development of supplementary functional foods.
HIGHER ORDER OPERATOR SPLITTING FOURIER SPECTRAL METHODS FOR THE ALLEN–CAHN EQUATION

The Allen–Cahn equation is solved numerically by operator splitting Fourier spectral methods. The basic idea of the operator splitting method is to decompose the original problem into sub-equations and compose the approximate solution of the original equation using the solutions of the subproblems. The purpose of this paper is to characterize higher order operator splitting schemes and propose several higher order methods. Unlike the first and the second order methods, each of the heat and the free-energy evolution operators has at least one backward evaluation in higher order methods. We investigate the effect of negative time steps on a general form of third order schemes and suggest three third order methods for better stability and accuracy. Two fourth order methods are also presented. The traveling wave solution and a spinodal decomposition problem are used to demonstrate numerical properties and the order of convergence of the proposed methods.
