Background: Acupuncture has the same analgesic effect as non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs and opioids. It is challenging to perform preoperative acupuncture in unmanageable animals, while the residual postoperative anesthetic effect facilitates the performance of acupuncture postoperatively. Objectives: To compare preoperative acupuncture or meloxicam versus postoperative acupuncture for postoperative analgesia after ovariohysterectomy. Methods: This is a horizontal prospective positive control blind randomized experimental study. Thirty-six dogs were randomly divided into three groups: GA (preemptive acupuncture), GPA (postoperative acupuncture), and GM (meloxicam 0.2 mg/kg IV preoperatively). After sedation with acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg IM), anesthesia was induced with propofol (5.3 ± 0.3 mg/kg) and maintained with isoflurane/O 2 . Fentanyl (2 µg/ kg, IV) was administered immediately before surgery. Bilateral acupuncture was performed at acupoints Large intestine 4, Spleen 6, and Stomach 36 for 20 minutes, before (GA) or immediately after surgery (GPA). Pain was evaluated by an observer blind to the treatment using the Glasgow scale before and for 24 hours after ovariohysterectomy. Dogs with a score ≥ 6 received rescue analgesia with morphine (0.5 mg/kg IM). Nonparametric data were analyzed by the Kruskal–Wallis test, followed by Dunn’s test and parametric data by ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test. Results: Two GA and one GPA dogs received rescue analgesia once. Two GM dogs received rescue analgesia and one of those was treated again twice. There were no differences in the number of dogs receiving rescue analgesia between groups (p = 0.80). Conclusion: Postoperative acupuncture was as effective as preoperative acupuncture or meloxicam in female dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy.

Background: A growing number of functional foods have been proposed to reduce cholesterol levels and the Portfolio Diet, which includes a combination of plant sterols, fibres, nuts, and soy protein, reduces low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) from 20% to30% in individuals with hyperlipidaemia. In this pilot study, the aim was to investigate whether a Mediterranean Diet incorporating anew and simple combination of cholesterol-lowering foods, excluding soy and nuts (namely the Portfolio-Mediterranean Diet), wouldreduce LDL-C levels, in the short-term, better than a Mediterranean Diet plus a sterol-enriched yogurt or a Mediterranean Diet alone. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 24 individuals on a Portfolio-Mediterranean Diet and 48 matched individuals on a Mediterranean Diet with or without a sterol-enriched yogurt (24 each groups) as controls. Results: At follow-up (after 48±12 days), we observed an LDL reduction of 21±4, 23±4, and 44±4 mg/dL in the MediterraneanDiet alone, Mediterranean Diet plus yogurt and Portfolio-Mediterranean Diet respectively (P<0.001). Conclusion: A Portfolio-Mediterranean Diet, incorporating a new combination of functional foods such as oats or barley, plant sterols,chitosan, and green tea but not soy and nuts, may reduce LDL of 25% in the short term in individuals with hypercholesterolemia.

Background/Aims: Although the detrimental effects of several dietary components on the promotion of non- alcoholic fatty liver disease are well known, no studies have assessed the role of dietary vitamin B6. Moreover, studies on the associations between dietary components or body composition indices and liver steatosis assessed by transient elastography are rare. Our aim was to identify the nutritional factors and anthropometric parameters associated with liver steatosis. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we enrolled 168 individuals (35% obese) who underwent a liver steatosis assessment by Controlled Attenuation Parameter measurement and nutritional assessment. Results: Tertiles of vitamin B6 intake were positively associated with hepatic steatosis (B=1.89, P =0.026, confidence interval [CI] 0.03-0.80) as well as with triglycerides, glucose, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and body mass index . In obese individuals, after multivariable analysis, the Controlled Attenuation Parameter score was still associated with triglycerides, ALT, and total protein intake (B=0.56, P=0.01, CI 0.10-1.02). Participants in tertile I (low intake) had a lower Controlled Attenuation Parameter than those in tertile III (P =0.01). Conclusions: We found a positive association between hepatic steatosis or Controlled Attenuation Parameter score and vitamin B6/total protein intake, probably related to the high intake of meat. Vitamin B6 might have a pathogenic role related to the increase of hepatic steatosis. (Clin Mol Hepatol 2017;23:249-259)

A method for the dynamical analysis of FE discretized uncertain linear and nonlinear structures is presented. This method is based on the moment equation approach, for which the differential equations governing the response first and second-order statistical moments must be solved. It is shown that they require the cross-moments between the response and the random variables characterizing the structural uncertainties, whose governing equations determine an infinite hierarchy. As a consequence, a closure scheme must be applied even if the structure is linear. In this sense the proposed approach is approximated even for the linear system. For nonlinear systems the closure schemes are also necessary in order to treat the nonlinearities. The complete set of equations obtained by this procedure is shown to be linear if the structure is linear. The application of this procedure to some simple examples has shown its high level of accuracy, if compared with other classical approaches, such as the perturbation method, even for low levels of closures.
A census of variability in globular cluster M 68 (NGC 4590)

<P>Aims. We analyse 20 nights of CCD observations in the V and I bands of the globular cluster M?68 (NGC 4590) and use them to detect variable objects. We also obtained electron-multiplying CCD (EMCCD) observations for this cluster in order to explore its core with unprecedented spatial resolution from the ground. Methods. We reduced our data using difference image analysis to achieve the best possible photometry in the crowded field of the cluster. In doing so, we show that when dealing with identical networked telescopes, a reference image from any telescope may be used to reduce data from any other telescope, which facilitates the analysis significantly. We then used our light curves to estimate the properties of the RR Lyrae (RRL) stars in M?68 through Fourier decomposition and empirical relations. The variable star properties then allowed us to derive the cluster’s metallicity and distance. Results. M?68 had 45 previously confirmed variables, including 42 RRL and 2 SX Phoenicis (SX Phe) stars. In this paper we determine new periods and search for new variables, especially in the core of the cluster where our method performs particularly well. We detect 4 additional SX Phe stars and confirm the variability of another star, bringing the total number of confirmed variable stars in this cluster to 50. We also used archival data stretching back to 1951 to derive period changes for some of the single-mode RRL stars, and analyse the significant number of double-mode RRL stars in M?68. Furthermore, we find evidence for double-mode pulsation in one of the SX Phe stars in this cluster. Using the different classes of variables, we derived values for the metallicity of the cluster of [Fe/H] = −2.07 ±0.06 on the ZW scale, or −2.20 ±0.10 on the UVES scale, and found true distance moduli μ0 = 15.00±0.11 mag (using RR0 stars), 15.00 ± 0.05 mag (using RR1 stars), 14.97 ±0.11 mag (using SX Phe stars), and 15.00±0.07 mag (using the MV[Fe/H] relation for RRL stars), corresponding to physical distances of 10.00 ±0.49, 9.99±0.21, 9.84 ±0.50, and 10.00 ±0.30 kpc, respectively. Thanks to the first use of difference image analysis on time-series observations of M?68, we are now confident that we have a complete census of the RRL stars in this cluster.</P>

In this study, the ethanolic extract obtained from piquiá pulp was assessed for genotoxicity and oxidative stress by employing the micronucleus test in bone marrow and peripheral blood cells in addition to comet, thiobarbituric-acid–reactive substances (TBARS), and reduced glutathione assays in the liver, kidney, and heart. Additionally, phytochemical analyses were performed to identify and quantify the chemical constituents of the piquiá extract. Wistar rats were treated by gavage with an ethanolic extract from piquiá pulp (75 mg/kg body weight) for 14 days, and 24 h prior to euthanasia, they received an injection of saline or doxorubicin (15 mg/kg body weight, intraperoneally). The results demonstrated that piquiá extract at the tested dose was genotoxic but not mutagenic, and it increased the TBARS levels in the heart. Further studies are required to fully elucidate how the properties of ethanolic extract of piquiá pulp can affect human health.

Iatrogenic perforations are severe complications of gastrointestinal endoscopy; therefore, their management should be adequatelyplanned. A 77-year-old man with a history of diverticulosis underwent a colonoscopy for anemia. During the procedure, aniatrogenic perforation occurred suddenly in the sigmoid colon, near a severe angle among the numerous diverticula. Through-thescopeclips were immediately applied to treat it and close mucosal edges. Laboratory tests showed increased levels of inflammationand infection, and although there were no complaints of abdominal pain, the patient had an extremely distended abdomen. Amultidisciplinary board began management based on a conservative approach. Pneumoperitoneum was treated with computedtomography-assisted drainage. After 72 hours, his intestinal canalization and laboratory tests were normal. Though this adverseevent is rare, a multidisciplinary board should be promptly gathered upon occurrence, even if the patient appears clinically stable, toconsider a conservative approach and avoid surgical treatment.
