This study was carried out to know the effect of cone production on diameter increment in Pinus koraiensis. For the cone production per tree, the number of one year-old immature cone and 2 year-old mature cone and the latter's weight were investigated, and for the diameter increment, width of annual ring and it's relative value to the radius were investigated for the 28 individuals of 45 year-old tree over a period of 4 years. And then the correlation between cone production and diameter increment were investigated. The results obtained are as follows: 1. A significant correlation between the number of immature cone (one year-old cone) and the width of annual ring was not recognizable. 2. A negative correlation between the number of mature cone and the width of annual ring was found significantly. 3. A large quantity of the mature cone production decreased not only the diameter increment in the year, but also effected the following year increment.

The main purpose of this study was to examine the jean brand image according to product evaluation such as brand purchasing experience, perceived quality, perceived value and purchasing intention. In addition, brand awareness, brand preference, brand satisfaction after purchasing were also investigated. The questionnaire was distributed to 500 high school students and undergraduate students. Data from 430 respondents were analyzed using Descriptive statistics, Frequency, percentage, t-test. The results were as follows : 1. Brnad-awareness ranked highly in the Bang-Bang and displayed following ranks as GUESS, Levi's, Lee, C.K, GET USED, OPT, M.F.G. 2. Brnad-preference ranked highly in the Levi's and displayed following ranks as GET USED, OPT, GUESS, C.K, Lee, M.F.G, Bandg-Bang. 3. Brand-image evaluative attributes were significantly different between brand experience group and non-experience group except price at more than the level of p≤.05. 4. Brand-image evaluative attributes affected to partially perceived quality, perceived value, purchasing intention at more than the level of p≤.05. 5. Brand-awareness significantly correlated with brand-preference, perceived quality, perceived value, purchasing intention at more than the level of p≤.05. Perceived quality significantly correlated with perceved value and purchasing intention at the level of p≤.05. But Purchasing experience negative correlated with brand-preference, perceived quality, perceived value, purchasing intention.
소나무-참나무 천연혼효림에 있어서의 수분 경쟁에 관한 연구

This study is to rationalize the forest management practice based upon the growth and water competition of pine-oak natural mixed forest stands in central part of South Korea. Average volume is 259.3 m^(3)/ha for pine stands and 150 m^(3)/ha for mixed pine stands, whereas 206.5 m^(3)/ha for pure oak stands, and 71.7 m^(3)/ha for mixed oak stands. Quadratic mean diameter and quadratic mean height, basal area, and volume decrease as the direction moves from north to south, whereas the values peak at south slope and hit the lowest at the north for oak stands. The maximum water potentials measured between 12 and 14 oclock was analyzed by stand and altitude, and by direction in case of mixed stand. Water potential of pine showed higher in both pure stands and mixed stands than oak. Especially the water potential of oak in muted stands was 3 MPa, which was lower than that of pines, -2.7 MPa. The value of two species increased as the altitude gets lower. Pine has 3.2 MPa at higher altitude, -2.4 MPa at lower altitude, which are much higher than those of oak, 3.4 MPa and 2.9 MPa at higher and lower altitudes. Soil water content was high m oak pure stands than pine pure stands or mixed stands Soil water content for each direction in mixed stands tended to decrease as slope goes from north to south. Interspecific water potential and the soil moisture content turned out to be highly correlated. Under the same soil moisture content, water potential of oak was lower that that of pine. Therefore, it seems that both pine and oak have high moisture requirement in the highly competitive southern slope and oak has higher moisture requirement than pine. It is concluded that, oak is in much competitive position than pine in terms of water competition.

This research was performed to estimate the seedling growth of Korean white pine based on open ground storage period to stimulate seed germination. The results are as follows: 1. The length of seedlings gradually increased as the storage period was delayed. The contribution rate to seedling growth by storage period was 23.84%. 2. The diameter was irregular, but larger with early open ground storage. The contribution rate to diameter by storage period was 38.25%. 3. The Seedling weight showed a tendency to be decreased with late seed storge. The contribution rate to weight growth by storage period was 18.41%.

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>The severity of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) population compared with that in normal glucose tolerance (NGT) individuals has not yet been quantitatively assessed. We investigated the prevalence and the severity of NAFLD in a T2DM population using controlled attenuation parameter (CAP).</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Subjects who underwent testing for biomarkers related to T2DM and CAP using Fibroscan® during a regular health check-up were enrolled. CAP values of 250 dB/m and 300 dB/m were selected as the cutoffs for the presence of NAFLD and for moderate to severe NAFLD, respectively. Biomarkers related to T2DM included fasting glucose/insulin, fasting C-peptide, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), glycoalbumin, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Among 340 study participants (T2DM, n=66; pre-diabetes, n=202; NGT, n=72), the proportion of subjects with NAFLD increased according to the glucose tolerance status (31.9% in NGT; 47.0% in pre-diabetes; 57.6% in T2DM). The median CAP value was significantly higher in subjects with T2DM (265 dB/m) than in those with pre-diabetes (245 dB/m) or NGT (231 dB/m) (all p<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that subjects with moderate to severe NAFLD had a 2.8-fold (odds ratio) higher risk of having T2DM than those without NAFLD (<I>p</I>=0.02; 95% confidence interval, 1.21–6.64), and positive correlations between the CAP value and HOMA-IR (ρ=0.407) or fasting C-peptide (ρ=0.402) were demonstrated.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Subjects with T2DM had a higher prevalence of severe NAFLD than those with NGT. Increased hepatic steatosis was significantly associated with the presence of T2DM, and insulin resistance induced by hepatic fat may be an important mechanistic connection.</P>
Case Report : A Case of Embryonal Sarcoma of the Liver Mimicking a Hydatid Cyst in an Adult

An undifferentiated (embryonal) liver sarcoma (ULS) originates from a primitive mesenchymal cell, with a predilection for childhood and very rare occurrence in adults. We report a case of a ULS that was incidentally found in a 53-year-old female. Our case was initially interpreted as a large hydatid cyst, which was later suspected to be a neoplastic lesion because its size was increasing and a solid portion was newly detected after shrinkage of the cyst following drainage. The patient underwent successful right hepatic lobectomy with complete resection, and is currently disease-free without adjuvant therapy. Although it is difficult to diagnose a hepatic cyst as a ULS due to its rare occurrence in adulthood and lack of specific findings, its possibility should be considered, especially when its size is increasing, because early diagnosis and curative resection are necessary for a favorable outcome. Objectives: It has been known that excessive iron promote the growth of cancer cells aad suggested that iron oversupply in cancer patients may enhance tumor growth and adversely affect cancer therapy and that desferoxamine (DFO) as a iron chelating agent may have a place in anticancer agents, which acts as a potent inhibitor of DNA synthesis via inhibition of the ribonucleotide reductase. However there have been no reports on the combined effect of DFO with other chemotherapeutics in vitro, This study was done to answer the questions: Does DFO inhibit the growth of cultured hepatoma cells? and Does the combination of DFO and chemotherapeutic agents have a synergistic effect on inhibition of tumor growth? Methods: Using PLC/PRF/5 and Hep G2 cells as hepatoma cells and normal diploid cells of WI-38 as control, the MTT assay was performed for evaluation of the cytotoxicity and an isobologram method to analyze the combined effects of DFO and other chemotherapeutic agents. Results: 1) The hepatoma cells grew faster in an iron-enriched medium than in the medium without additional iron supplementation but the normal diploid cells of WI-38 did not. 2) The 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC50) on PLC/ PRF/5 and Hep 62 cells were 75.1 and 29.1 ㎍/ml, respectively. But the growth of WI-38 was not inhibited below 74.4% with even 200 ㎍/ml of DFO. 3) On both hepatoma cells, the growth inhibitory effects of DFO were reversed with simultaneous administration of stoichiometric doses of ferric citrate. 4) Adriamycin (ADR), 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and cisplatin (DDP) inhibited the growth of all 3 cell lines, but larger doses were required to inhibit the WI-38 to obtain the same effect. 5) When DFO was combined with chemotherapeutic agents, a marked synergistic effect was observed with the combination of DFO and 5-FU on PLC/PRF/5 cells. The synergistic effect was also noted in Hep G2 cells with all three combinations of DFO-ADR, DFO-5-FU and DFO-DDP. Conclusion: Iron oversupply may enhance the hepatoma growth and this should be taken into consideration treating patients with hepatoma. And the antitumor effect of DFO and its synergistic effect with other chemotherapeutic agents may suggest that iron chelator like the DFO may be a useful treatment for patients with hepatoma in conjuction with other anticancer drugs.
