        Biotechnological overview of agriculturally important endophytic fungi

        The many fascinating aspects of biotechnology in endophytic studies not only concern their interactions with plants but their potential as key players driving the synthesis of certain biomolecules that enhance plant growth, immunity, and protection against environmental stresses. A high microbial population inhabits the rhizosphere due to rhizodeposition and root exudate secretions. The rhizoplane forms a barrier that selectively screens the types of microorganisms infiltrating the root tissues with well-developed hyphae for successful colonization and establishment of endophytic communities within the plant tissues. Fungal endophytes contribute to the physiological and metabolic functions in the host plants, such as nutrient acquisition, nitrogen fixation, and control of plant pathogens. They also contribute to plant growth via complex mechanisms: mutualism or antagonism. The molecular methods of studying these endophytes have provided salient information for harnessing their potential for possible applications in improving agricultural productivity. Despite this, only a small fraction of endophytes have been isolated and explored. Hence, the metagenomic approach has revealed more insights into the endophytic structural diversity and functions for the detection of novel traits that can easily be genetically manipulated for various agricultural and industrial applications. Furthermore, biotechnological applications of biofertilizer from endophytic fungi help ensure a safe environment and aid in the development of agriculturally friendly processes for improved crop yields and productivity.

      • Elecrtinic Raman scattering in Cd_1-x C0_xSe

        The Raman spectrum of the diluted magnetic semiconductor Cd_(1-x)Co_xSe(x=0.035 and 0.082) exhibits a line(W_PM) associated with the transition between the Zeeman-split orbital Γ_2 ground-state levels of Co^2+ and is characterized by g=2.32. Below 20 K, this Raman peak shifts to higher frequencies, signaling the onset of magnetic ordering. At low temperatures, spin-flip Raman scattering from electrons bound to shallow donors(W_SF) is observed. The Raman shift as a function of magnetic field and temperature shows a large s-d exchange interaction(αN_O=320meV) and clear evidence of a bound magnetic polaron. Evidence of magnetic ordering at low temperatures, indicated by the temperature dependence of W_PM, and the large antiferromagnetic temperature(T_AF)required to fit the temperature and magnetic-field dependence of W_SF, indicate a significantly larger Co^2+-Co^2+ antiferromagnetic coupling than is the case for Mn^2+-Mn^2+ in, for example, Cd_(1-x)Mn_xSe.

        Hypoglycemic and Hypocholesterolemic Potential of Persea americana Leaf Extracts

        The effect of aqueous and methanolic leaf extracts of Persea americanaon plasma glucose, total cholesterol,low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-CHOL), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-CHOL) in rats was investi-gated. Albino rats were fed a diet containing 20% groundnut oil, 0.5% cholesterol, and 0.25% cholic acid to induce hyperc-holesterolemia. They were then treated daily with aqueous or methanolic extract of P. americanaleaf (10 mg/kg of bodyweight) for 8 weeks. There were no significant (P. .05) differences in the overall body weight gain of the hypercholes-terolemic rats compared to normal control. Liver to body weight ratio, plasma glucose, total cholesterol (T-CHOL), and LDL-CHOL levels were significantly (P. .05) elevated in rats fed hypercholesterolemic diet compared to normal controls. Theadministration of aqueous and methanolic leaf extracts of P. americanainduced reductions in plasma glucose (16% and 11%,respectively), T-CHOL (8% and 5%, respectively), and LDL-CHOL (19% and 20%, respectively) in the treated rats comparedto the hypercholesterolemic controls. Also, plasma HDL-CHOL concentrations increased by 85% and 68%, respectively, inthe aqueous and methanolic extract-treated rats compared to the hypercholesterolemic controls. These results suggest thataqueous and methanolic leaf extracts of P. americanalower plasma glucose and influence lipid metabolism in hypercholes-terolemic rats with consequent lowering of T-CHOL and LDL-CHOL and a restoration of HDL-CHOL levels. This could rep-resent a protective mechanism against the development of atherosclerosis.

        The Tenth Commandment, René Girard, And the Good Neighborhood of Hebrew Wisdom

        이 논문은 십계명의 열 번째 계명과 잠언서의 지혜 사이에 공존하는 욕망(desire)과 관계되는 부분의 연구를 통해 구약의 지혜서에서 나타난 욕망의 역할을 탐구한다. 열 번째 계명이 십계명의 정신(ethos)중 가장 핵심적인 부분이라는 것과 잠언서는 소위 “갈망의 학파”(a school of desire)라는 주장이 있다. 이에 필자는 르네 지라르(René Girard)의 “모방적 욕망”(mimetic desire)의 영향력 있는 이론에 근거하여 잠언서가 소위 “욕망”을 제한하고 규제하려는 관심에 있어서 특히 오늘날에 흔히 인식되는 것보다 더 큰 사회적인 중요성이 있다는 것을 주장하려 한다. 아울러 이 고찰은 십계명과 구약의 지혜서가 공유하는 가치 체계에 대한 이해를 돕는다. This article explores the role of desire in OT wisdom through an examination of the common ground in desire between the tenth commandment and wisdom in Proverbs. It argues that the tenth commandment is of central importance to the ethos of the Decalogue as a whole and that Proverbs is similarly a school of desire. Following the seminal work of René Girard on mimetic desire, I propose that Proverbs’ concern to constrain and direct desire is of far great societal importance, not least for today, than is often recognized. In the process, light is cast on the system of values that the Ten Commandments and OT wisdom share in common.

        Responsible Hermeneutics

        이 글은 이제 우리가 하나님께 응답할 수 있는 능력을 우리에게 주셨다는 성경해석학을 발전시킬 수 있는 때가 무르익었음을 논증하고자 한다. 그리고 이것을 ‘책임질 수 있는(response-able) 해석학’ 으로 부르고자 한다. 역사를 되돌아 볼 때, 역사비평학은 이와 같은 해석학에 손상을 입혔으므로, 이제 ‘책임질 수 있는 해석학’으로 신학적인 해석의 르네상스를 다시 열 수 있는 새로운 가능성을 생각하게 한다. 특히 이 글은 신학과 철학의 역할에 대하여 특히 초점을 가지고 Kevin Vanhoozer, N. T. Wright, Francis Watson, 그리고 Herman Dooyeweerd의 사상과 씨름하면서, ‘책임질 수 있는 해석학’을 제안한다. This article argues that the time is ripe for us to develop a biblical hermeneutic that takes our God-given capacity to respond to God seriously, what I call a response-able hermeneutic. In the context of the damaging effects of historical criticism on such a hermeneutic and the new possibilities opened up by the renaissance of theological interpretation, this article focuses in particular on the role of theology and philosophy in such a responsible hermeneutic through an engagement with the works of Kevin Vanhoozer, N. T. Wright, Francis Watson and Herman Dooyeweerd. It is argued that insights from rigorous Christian work in philosophy, theology and exegesis will be required for a responsible hermeneutic for today.

        Cost Effectiveness of Interventions to Promote Screening for Colorectal Cancer: A Randomized Trial

        Objectives: Screening for colorectal cancer is considered cost effective, but is underutilized in the U.S. Information on the efficiency of "tailored interventions" to promote colorectal cancer screening in primary care settings is limited. The paper reports the results of a cost effectiveness analysis that compared a survey-only control group to a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) web-based intervention (screen for life) and to a tailored interactive computer-based intervention. Methods: A randomized controlled trial of people 50 and over, was conducted to test the interventions. The sample was 1224 partcipants 50-70 years of age, recruited from Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, a large multi-specialty clinic in Houston, Texas. Screening status was obtained by medical chart review after a 12-month follow-up period. An "intention to treat" analysis and micro costing from the patient and provider perspectives were used to estimate the costs and effects. Analysis of statistical uncertainty was conducted using nonparametric bootstrapping. Results: The estimated cost of implementing the web-based intervention was $40 per person and the cost of the tailored intervention was $45 per person. The additional cost per person screened for the web-based intervention compared to no intervention was $2602 and the tailored intervention was no more effective than the web-based strategy. Conclusions: The tailored intervention was less cost-effective than the web-based intervention for colorectal cancer screening promotion. The web-based intervention was less cost-effective than previous studies of in-reach colorectal cancer screening promotion. Researchers need to continue developing and evaluating the effectiveness and costeffectiveness of interventions to increase colorectal cancer screening.
