Anti-obesity Effect of Carbon Dioxide Supercritical Fluid Extracts of Panax Ginseng C. A. Meyer

The root of Korean ginseng, Panax ginseng C. A. Meyer, has been known worldwide as a panacea for many centuries. Contradictory weight gain and loss effects in Korean ginseng led to the adoption of supercritical carbon dioxide extraction to assure the quality of food-grade anti-obesity ginseng products. Among different extraction conditions of CO2 pressure (200 and 300 bars) and temperature (40, 50, and 60oC), the highest extraction yield of 0.66% was obtained with 300 bars at 40oC. To test anti-obesity effect, each supercritical fluid extract (SFE) was supplemented to the high-fat diet of male obese-prone C57BL/6J strain mice. All carbon dioxide SFEs of ginseng showed significant weight-loss effects in the tested mice. The average weights of normal and high fat diet mice were 28.7±2.0 and 35.0±1.6 g, respectively, after 10 weeks. Average weights of mice on SFE-supplemented high fat diets were between 24.5±1.4 and 25.9±1.3 g. SFEs obtained at 50oC, and at both 200 and 300 bars, showed the most profound anti-obesity effect. Both SFEs showed ~15and ~30% weight loss for the normal and high-fat diet mice, respectively. The major component of the SFE was analyzed as polyacetylene compounds, and panaxydol and panaxynol were identified as major polyacetylene compounds. However, the anti-obesity effect of the ginseng SFEs was not correlated with contents of these two polyacetylene compounds in SFEs. No side-effects of ginseng SFEs were observed, and the anti-obesity effect was reversible.

The aim of this study was to investigate a validation method for determination of tricin in Phragmites communis ears. Tricin was isolated with chromatographic methods and used as the standard substances for quantitative analysis. The structural determination was characterized by comparing their NMR spectral data with values reported in the literature. For validation, the specificity, linearity, precision, accuracy, detection limits, and quantification limits of tricin was measured by HPLC. The results show that the specificity was satisfied with retention time and diode array detector (DAD) spectrum by analysis of tricin using HPLC. The limits of detection (LOD) for tricin was 0.84 mg/ml. Recovery of tricin was 98.80~108.22% with R.S.D values less than 2%. Intra-day and inter-day precisions of tricin in P. communis ears were 99.96~100.96% and 99.01~100.40%, respectively. Therefore, application of tricin was validated by an analytical method as major compound in P. communis ears.

Objectives : This study was designed to evaluated the effect of electro acupuncture on Heart Rate Variability of Patients with functional voiding disease. Methods : Subjects were voluntarily recruited by newspapers and internet. Electro acupuncture was performed three times a week for 3 weeks. Acupuncture point for EA group was B32, Electrical stimulation frequency was 2Hz, duration 20min, and intensity was up to pain threshold according to patients. The patients' Heart Rate Variability was measured before, after 3 weeks of treatment for 5 minutes. Results : In time domain analysis, There were significant increase of SDNN and RMSSD(p<0.05) after 3 weeks treatment. In frequency domain analysis, There were significant increase of LF and LF/HF ratio(p<0.05) after 3 weeks treatment. There were no significant changes in other components of heart rate variability. Conclusion : This study suggests that electroacupuncture treatments can be applicable to improve autonomic nervous system in patients with functional voiding disease.

Objectives : This study was performed to define clinical character of peripheral facial nerve injury. Methods : 36 patients was identified with peripheral facial nerve injury among 1128 patients who visited the Facial Palsy Center in Kyung Hee University Hospital at Gang-dong between January 2010 and November 2011. We reviewed the medical records including gender, age, cause, symptom, period of treatment, and axonal loss. Results : Most common cause of peripheral facial nerve injury was iatrogenic surgery, followed by direct trauma, neoplastic disorders. Patients with facial nerve injury commonly complain about facial palsy(ipsilateal or bilateral), followed by paresthesia, facial spasm, facial pain, auricular pain. Peripheral facial nerve injury group showed worse electrophysiological pattern and younger onset age compared with Bell's palsy group. Conclusion : This study was designed for 36 patients and further studies are necessary.
