구기지황탕 투여 후 호전된 경도인지장애 환자 1례에 대한 증례보고

Objective: Alzheimer's disease is characterized by progressive, irreversible brain damage and cognitive decline. Although the diagnosis and treatment of the prodromal symptoms of dementia are important, no treatment for mild cognitive impairment has been currently established. Herein, we report the case of an 80-year-old female patient with memory complaints treated with Gugijihwang-tang, a traditional Korean medicine herbal formula, as an add-on medication. Case Presentation: The patient was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment based on clinical examinations using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD), Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Scale, Global Deterioration (GDR) Scale, and Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR) Scale. She was treated with Gugijihwang-tang bis in die for 12 months while continuing her original medications, including 5-mg donepezil and 590-mg acetyl-l-carnitine. The MMSE score in the Korean Version of the CERAD Assessment Packet increased from 21 to 27 during the 12-month treatment period, and the CERAD 2 score increased from 33 to 62. The instrumental ADL scale score improved from 11 to 5. Other clinical examination results also showed improvement. The patient was satisfied and experienced no significant adverse events related to the Gugijihwang-tang treatment. Conclusion: This case suggests that Gugijihwang-tang could be considered as a treatment method for patients with mild cognitive impairment.

[논문철회] 저장에 따른 상추의 카로티노이드와 안토시아닌 함량 및 항산화능 변화

저장기간과 저장방법에 따른 청치마상추와 적치마상추 중의 카로티노이드 성분과 안토시아닌 성분의 함량 변화를 관찰하고, 함량 변화에 따른 항산화 활성을 알아보기 위하여 본 실험을 수행하였다. 그 결과 실온에서 보관한 청치마상추의 경우 저장기간이 지남에 따라 총 카로티노이드의 함량이 현저하게 줄어드는 것을 볼 수 있었으나 냉장보관의 경우 수확 후 9일이 지난 시료에서도 함량의 유의적 변화가 관찰되지 않았다. 적치마상추 중의 안토시아닌 함량 변화에 있어서는 실온에서 보관한 경우와 냉장에서 보관한 경우 간의 유의적인 차이점이 관찰되지 않았으며 저장기간에 따른 차이점도 관찰되지 않았다. 따라서 청치마상추 중의 카로티노이드 성분은 실온에서보다 냉장보관에서 더 안정하다는 것을 알 수 있었으며, 적치마상추 중의 안토시아닌 성분은 저장기간과 저장온도에 있어서 카로티노이드 성분보다 안정하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 한편 DPPH 라디칼과 ABTS 라디칼을 이용한 항산화 활성을 측정한 결과 ABTS 라디칼을 이용한 항산화 활성 방법이 총 카로티노이드의 함량에 비례하여 항산화 활성을 보였다. 또한 안토시아닌 추출물이 카로티노이드 추출물보다 높은 활성을 보였는데, 이러한 결과는 안토시아닌 성분의 항산화 활성이 카로티노이드 성분보다 높아서라기보다는 총 안토시아닌 함량이 총 카로티노이드 함량보다 약 5배 이상 높은 점과 비타민 C와 같은 상추에 함유되어 있는 다른 수용성 항산화 물질로 인한 것으로 추정하였다. Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) is an important dietary leafy vegetable that is primarily consumed as a fresh or salad material. It has a number of cultural varieties with green and/or red color. Carotenoids and anthocyanins are known to be responsible for these two colors, respectively. In this study, carotenoid and anthocyanin contents were determined to evaluate the stability of these functional pigments during storage at home. Analyses were carried out at the beginning, 3, 6, 9, and 12 days after harvest. In the course of storage at room temperature, total carotenoid levels rapidly decreased, and the decrease was found to be greatest during the first 3 days. Meanwhile, carotenoid level slightly changed within the first 9 days at 4°C after harvest. This result suggests that carotenoids in green lettuce are more stable when refrigerated than at room temperature. Meanwhile, total anthocyanin content in red lettuce did not significantly decrease during storage at room temperature and 4°C, which indicates that anthocyanins have higher stability during storage compared with carotenoids in green lettuce. Anthocyanin extract exhibited higher antioxidant activity than carotenoid extract based on 2,2-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging assay. Antioxidant activity of anthocyanin extract may also be estimated directly by the presence of another potent hydrophilic antioxidant compound, which is ascorbic acid in this extract. In addition, anthocyanin extract showed about a 5-fold higher amount of anthocyanins than carotenoids in the carotenoid extract. The high correlation between carotenoid content with ABTS radical scavenging activity indicates that ABTS assay is more suitable than 1,1-diphenyl- 2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging assay for detecting antioxidant capacity of carotenoid extract from lettuce.

College Students’ Perspectives Toward an English Medium Instruction Course in The Field of General Education

Within the context of Higher Education (HE) the implementation and use of English Medium Instruction (i.e. EMI) courses across the globe seems to be very common within particular departments or amongst specific majors. This paper, however, explores college students’ perspectives toward an EMI course in the field of General Education within the Korean context to determine if there is a need for introducing or adding more classes to the prerequisite curriculum. This study utilizes mixed methods of individual interviews, a group discussion, and a participant observation with 6 college students. The results of this research confirms that there is a desire and recognition by Korean university undergraduates for the need of EMI courses within the fields of General Education to maximize their English abilities and compete both domestically and internationally within a society that emphasizes English education as extremely important to be a part of the globalized world. Therefore, this paper hope to provide implications for the purpose of introducing more EMI courses in the area of General Education at a college level within the Korean context.

The Impact of Linguistic Environments on Korean Immigrant Parents` Attitudes toward Heritage Language Maintenance in Canada

This study aims to compare two Korean immigrant communities, namely, Korean community in Toronto and Korean community in Montreal in what it concerns the possible parental attitudes and behaviors linked to heritage language maintenance. Data collection took place over a two month period. The participants were 22 first generation immigrant parents of Korean communities in both cities (i.e., 9 participants from Toronto & 13 participants from Montreal). One-on-one in-depth semi-guided interviews were employed. The results of this study reveal that Korean immigrant parents’ expectations for their children’s proficiency level in the Korean language are very high in both cities and both groups of parents want their children to preserve the Korean language in order for them to maintain cultural and ethnic identity, have practical advantages with multilingual skills for their future career choices, and have better relationships with other Koreans and relatives. This study provides a picture of differences in linguistic environments that exist between linguistic conceptions, attitudes and expectations of members of different communities. Overall, this picture contribute to the understanding of a complex problem of heritage language maintenance in different linguistic environments. (Dankook University)

Anthropologists have observed among certain peoples a custom according to which the father retires to bed while his child is being born and behaves as if he were in the throes of giving birth to it himself. This custom is called the couvade. I think Cymbeline might be regarded as one long couvade in the guise of a dramatic romance. My angle on the play is that it makes sense of the apparent conflict between the Cymbeline plot and the Posthumus plot ― a conflict that seems to consign the script to structural incoherence. On the face of it, the two plotlines are pulling in opposite directions and endorsing contradictory views of women and of men. Cymbeline acts out the oscillating pattern of the romances as a whole: the plot that would recover trust in the female is frustrated and baffled by the plot that would recover masculine authority; the two remain incompatible. And yet this very incompatibility allows the two plots to protect one another. < Jinju National University >

다관절 로봇의 동적 시뮬레이터 설계

This study proposes an articulated robot control system using an on/off-line robot graphic simulator with multiple networks. The proposed robot control system consists of a robot simulator using OpenGL, a robot controller based on a DSP(TMS320) motion board, and the server/client communication by multiple networks. Each client can control the real robot through a server and can compare the real robot motion with the virtual robot motion in the simulation. Also, all clients can check and analyze the robot motion simultaneously through the motion image and data of the real robot. In order to show the validity of the presented system, we present an experimental result for a 6-axis vertical articulated robot. The proposed robot control system is useful, especially, in the industrial fields using remote robot control as well as industrial production automation with many clients.

English Translation Service for Immigrant Youth’s Korean Language Maintenance in a Korean Ethnic Religious Community Institution

This paper explores the Korean ethnic church members’ attitudes toward the English translation service of the Sunday worship service for Korean immigrant youth in Montreal. This study also investigates the relationship between the adoption of the translation service and the Korean language and culture maintenance. The study involved qualitative interviews, a questionnaire, on-site document analysis, and participant observation. The participants (n=21 in total) were Korean immigrant students between the ages of 13 and 19, who attend a Korean ethnic church in Montreal (n=8), Korean immigrant adult church members (n=10), pastors of the church (n=2), and a translator of the service (n=1). This study confirms Korean ethnic church members’ positive attitudes towards the English translation service for keeping the Korean immigrant youth within the church. In addition, the study shows that the adoption of the translation service helps the Korean immigrant youth maintain the Korean language and cultural identity. Thus, this study suggests that the translation service should be a strategic choice for Korean ethnic churches to keep Korean immigrant youth without the sacrifice of the Korean language as their heritage language. Some implications for immigrant youth’s Korean language maintenance as a heritage language in Canada are briefly touched on.
