Vol.46 No.4
The present study was conducted with the aim of examining which kind of interaction strategies that dialogue participants existing in the university space in Korea are using based on urban language discourse. To this end, the author of this study compared and investigated the strategy that existing applied linguistics studies and metrolingualism have introduced, and collected and analyzed discourse and SNS dialogue produced by foreign students, Korean professors, and foreign language instructors. The results showed that the universities in Korea are transforming into a space where various languages and cultures come into contact and interact with each other, and that new and creative interaction strategies are being employed. Based on this analysis, the author determined and suggested ways to change the direction of Korean language and culture education in the future. This study holds a primary significance in that it has deepened the urban language discourse that is in conformity with the multi-lingual era and stoked the researcher’s interest in contact zones, trans-linguistics, interaction strategy, and so on. Moreover, this study is meaningful in that it viewed the linguistic identity of speakers whose as creative communicators as well as open and active culture enjoyers, and that it empirically reported the language resources such community members produce.
Vol.15 No.2
There are various methods for evaluating language ability, which differ with traditional assessment methods. For example, portfolio development, project work, interviews, self-assessment, co- ssessment, etc. A few names used to describe these methods are ‘performance’, ‘authentic’, ‘true’, ‘appropriate’ and ‘direct’ assessments but for the purposes of this study I shall call them a alternative assessment’. Alternative assessment methods are totally different from traditional methods of testing and attempt to overcome the weak points found in traditional assessment. They are used to test the ability of students during particular tasks. Alternative assessment methods use real-life performance as a criterion for measurement. They attempt to provide measurement procedures in such a way as to approximate non-test performance. In this paper, I will argue for a continuum from direct to indirect assessment in Korean language instruction. The primary characteristic of alternative assessment, the fact that it is tied to real world skills, is seen as one of its main advantages. I will try to show that it is possible to achieve personal and indirect assessment of Korean language proficiency and also demonstrate why it is appropriate to refer to the above-noted methods as ‘alternative assessment’.
Reduction of Apnea Test Time in an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation-Dependent Potential Donor
2017 Korean Journal of Transplantation Vol.31 No.1
The diagnosis of brain death is essential for deceased donor organ transplantation. Currently, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is used to increase the chance of survival of patients with severe cardiac and respiratory failure. Therefore, cases of ECMO-dependent potential donors are increasing. The apnea test (AT) is a mandatory component in the clinical determination of brain death. However, conventional AT is not easily applicable to ECMO-dependent potential donors because both the ventilator and ECMO play an important role in carbon dioxide elimination. Accordingly, different methods of AT from those used in routine procedures must be considered. We report here a case of conventional AT with time delay and two cases of AT within 3 minutes by adjusting sweep gas flow rate of ECMO in ECMO-dependent potential donors.
