Hematologic investigations were made on the blood samples taken from bovine leukemia virus (BLV)-seropositive Holstein-Friesian cattle in Korea, and their absolute lymphocyte count was compared with that of BLV-seronegative cattle. The incidence of persistent lymphocytosis (PL) was also determined. The normal bovine lymphocyte count was established on the basis of studies of 656 blood samples taken three times from 297 seronegative animals aged from 0~6 months to over 5 years at 5~6-month intervals. The data were examined according to 7 age groups of samples placed into their respective age groups. A peak in average total count was reached at 6~12 months ($5.36{\times}10^3/{\mu}l$) and thereafter the count declined continuously until over 5 years ($3.17{\times}10^3/{\mu}l$). From the results, 99.74 percent limits were calculated, and the upper limit of the range was chosen as the cutoff point for lymphocytosis. A PL was defined as a lymphocyte count that exceeded the above 99.74 percent limits and persisted over an interval of at least three months. The criterion for PL was applied to classifying 515 blood samples obtained four times from 189 seropositive animals without clinical signs at 5~7-month intervals. It was found that 54 (28.5%) of seropositive animals were with PL; cattle with PL were in age groups of 2~3 years to over 5 years.

The seasonal availability and abundance of the free-living stages of sheep nematodes is a key factor in the occurrence and severity of parasitic infection, and studies of larvae ecology could result in more rational control measures. In the present study seasonal pasture contamination and availability of nematodes for grazing sheep was examined as a baseline work for nematode control program at Namwon Branch, National Animal Breeding Institute during the period April 1988 through March 1989. Standard meteorological measurements were available from Unbong Sub-station, Honam Crops Experiment Station located about 200m from the experimental site. A total of 5 kinds of nematode larvae was detected: Haemonchus contortus was most prevalent (38.0%) with a decreasing order of Ostertagia spp (35.1%), Trichostrongylus spp (19.8%), nematodirus spp (6.6%), and Oesophagostomum spp (0.5%). A succession of species was recorded, in particular Ostertagia spp in May; Haemonchus contortus in June and July; Trichostrongylus spp in July and August; Nematodirus spp in August and September. These results can be incorporated into the nematode control program. To make a more rational control program, however, repeated herbage larval counts should be undertaken soil larval counts and fecal larval counts in the future.

As a baseline study for the establishment of bovine leukemia virus(BLV)-free herd in Korea, the prevalence of anti-BLV antibody was determined in the present study. Sera from Korean native cows of 8 provinces and from dairy cattle of 9 provinces were subjected to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Anti-BLV antibodies were positive in two (0.14%) of 1,413 Korean native cows. In contrast, 54.2% of 2,415 dairy cows were positive for anti-BLV antibodies, and their seropositive herd rate was 86.8%. And no differences were found in the sero-positive rates with age. The results indicate that the BLV infection rate has been increased continuously in Korea and that the establishment of BLV-free herd is imminent.

In view of the high prevalence rate of bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infections in cattle over the entire country, a large dairy farm in Chungnam province was chosen and‘test and segregate’ program was instituted. On July 1999, ELISA test was performed on 491 animals on the farm and only 163 cattle (139 adult cows, 18 female and 6 malecalves) were BLV-seronegative. From February 2000 through April 2004, the seronegative group was placed in barns 1,500 to 2,000 m from seropositive group andthereafter tested at 3- to 5-month intervals by ELISA. Animals seroconverted in consecutive tests were removed from the seronegative group immediately after thedetection of anti-BLV antibodies. The changes in management were aimed at preventing iatrogenic transfer of blood between cattle. Replacement heifers importedfrom other countries and calves born at the farm were repeatedly tested by ELISA, and only seronegative animals were introduced into the group. As of April 2004, there were 311 cattle in the BLV seronegative group of the farm. Twenty four cows of the initial 139 adult cows were seroconverted in 2000, and no seropositive animals were found since February 2001. Follow up of the group, from which all seropositive cattle were moved to a separate location, revealed no recurrence of BLV infection for three years. The approach in the present study might be valuable for Korean producers who would like to move toward a BLV-negative status.

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of imported 0.25 ml straw frozen semen on fertilizing capacity after artificial insemination. A total of 57 ewes of Corriedale were inseminated at the Namwon Branch, National Anirnal Breeding Institute. Lambing percentage and twinning percentage were 12.3% and 114. 3%, resepectively. Average weight at birth and weaning of 120 days old were 4.5kg and 21.9 kg, respectively. Gestation period was 152.6 days.

A 12-year-old, intact female Jindo was referred to our clinic due to the enlargement of all lymph nodes,as well as severe dyspnea. All palpatible lymph nodes were highly swelling and enlargement. The dog was diagnosedas end stage of multicentric lymphoma with multi-organ metastasis. In addition, the dog was diagnosed as havinga pulmonary thromboembolism via computed tomography (CT) and D-dimer concentrations and prothrombin time (PT)results. This case report describes that lymphoma can be associated with pulmonary thromboembolism which is lifethreatening complication in dogs. The present case was managed successfully with chemotherapy and antithrombotictreatment.
