Nostromo 속에 투영된 가치관

Nostromo is more than just a historical and political novel, dealing with each individual's closely knitted fate with that of the social system and state, comprising the more philosophical dimension by its significant metaphysical investigation of the inevitable human condition, struggling between the conflicting forces of law and violence, order and anarchy, liberty and dictatorship, material interest and noble ideal. The federalist Ribiera government collapses by the Monteros' nationalist coup d'etat, and the province of Sulaco succeeds in seceding, proclaiming itself the $quot;Occidental Republic$quot; owing to the economic power of the silver mine. The materialistic richness represented by silver ironically gives rise to the revolution, the sterilization of the Goulds' marriage life, Nostromo's vanity of honor and Decoud's cynical nihilistic engagement and suicide. Conrad's self-projection into the figures of the novel is very distinct. His respect for the values of tradition, discipline, courage and personal honor is well represented by Nostromo, the Italian supervisor of the workers. Martin Decoud, a French intellectual dilettante, disillusioned and visionary, shows the author's stressful sentiment of scepticism and historical consciousness of the imperialist cruel tactics of betrayal and exploitation. While Charles Gould, the English entrepreneur, possessed by materialistic development, reminds us of Conrad himself at one time in his economic stalemate, Doctor Monigham, crippled bodily and mentally by the former dictator's atrocious persecution, is another portrait of the self-derisive, prophetic vision of the author himself. The dramatic development of the plot is focused on the final reconciliation of the two rivals, Nostromo and Monigham, as a sign of gratitude and love for Mrs. Gould. Conrad suggests the possibility of overcoming the catastrophe and cheating a new value through Mrs. Gould's recognition about the world's depending on the poor people and her perception of the inevitable interrelatedness of history. The strategy of this novel is in awakening the reader's imagination about human integrity and in achieving the various effects of echo by projecting the author's views of life and artistic values into the several international protagonists in the political, geographical, economical and cultural background of revolution and anti-revolution of the state of Costaguana.

Perinatal and Familial Risk Factors Are Associated with Full Syndrome and Subthreshold Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in a Korean Community Sample

ObjectiveaaThe objective of this study was to examine the effect of perinatal and familial risk factors on full syndrome and subthreshold attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among Korean children and adolescents. MethodsaaA sample of 2,673 students was randomly selected from 19 representative schools in Seoul, Korea. The parents of the students completed the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children-version IV (DISC-IV), as well as questionnaires on perinatal and familial risk factors. ResultsaaMaternal stress and alcohol use during pregnancy, parental marital discord, parental separation or divorce, changes in primary caregivers, and notbreastfeeding were significantly associated with full syndrome ADHD; however, maternal stress during pregnancy was the only variable that differentiated subthreshold ADHD from non-ADHD. ConclusionaaOur results provide evidence the perinatal and familial risk factors contribute to the development of ADHD in Korea children and adolescents, and suggest that these perinatal and familial risk factors are more closely related to full syndrome than to subthreshold ADHD

펄벅의 문학작품에 나타난 세계정신

Pearl Buck, Chinese rather than American, in her view of life and emotion, tried to overcome the conflict and disharmony of the two worlds by building the spiritual bridge of mutual understanding between the East and the West. Having lived for the half of her life since a baby in China, she understands the vivid realities of the Chinese life and succeeds to portray them in her novels with her talented skill of realistic description. Her main motif as author is to create the peaceful cosmopolitan world, destroying the barriers of the racial and national hatred, prejudice and misunderstanding and elevating the Oriental view of value as an alternative to the Western civilization. Pearl Buck's literary world can be divided into three categories. The first one represents the concrete real lives of the plain, humble Chinese people, as in The Good Earth, Sons, A House Divided, and Mother. The second portraits the various aspects of love and conflict among the people of different races and nationalities, as in Peony, A Letter from Peking, and The Hidden Flower. The third deals with the bad side - effects, resulting from the ideological confrontation between socialism and capitalism, as in The Living Reed and The Three Daughters of Madame Liang. My Several Worlds, her autobiography written in a very flowing style of pathos, implies that Pearl Buck herself is not the result of one race and one nation spiritually, but the complicated, mixed being of various cultures and backgrounds. Her view of world is that of pantheism, accomodating various aspects of Christianity, Buddihism, Confucianism Taoism and other Oriental philosophies of life, reminding us of Henry David Thoreau and Lin Yutang. Her strong point is in the firm belief in the future prosperity of mankind, based on peace and liberty, with her resourceful sense of wit and humor, and in the perpetual truth that there is no end to the world when the cultural exchange and the racial reconciliation are put into effect harmoniously.

다중이용업소 화재시 대피용 방화복의 개발

다중이용업소는 영업상 룸을 설치하게 되어 내부구조가 복잡하고 가연성 실내장식물로 인해 화재 발생 시 연소 확대가 빠르고, 유독가스가 발생되어 인명피해가 크며 진화가 어렵다. 본 연구에서는 다중이용업소 화재에서 착용이 간편하고 경제적인 방화복을 개발하여 인명피해를 감소시키고자 한다. 여러 종류의 섬유에 각종 방염제를 사용하여 방염처리한 후, 45도 방염성능실험, 수직 연소성 실험 등을 실시하여 내화성능이 적합하고 경제적인 방화복 재질을 선정하였다. 선정된 재료로 비교적 단순한 형태의 방화복을 디자인하여 제작하였다. 대피자의 호흡을 돕기 위한 휴대용 산소캔을 부착하여 시험하였다. 화재모델링 프로그램인 FDS를 이용하여 수치 해석하여 인체실험이 곤란한 실험을 수치 해석하였다. 실제화재에 대한 방화복의 내화특성을 실험하기 위하여 화재실험실에서 화재 실험을 시행하였다. 또한, 방화복을 입고 화염이나 연기에 얼마나 오래 견딜 수 있는지를 알아보는 인체 적용 실험도 실시하였다. 실제 화재에 대한 방화복의 내화특성을 실험하여, 화염과 연기에 내구성을 갖는 간편하고 경제적인 방화복을 개발하여, 다중이용업소를 이용하는 불특정 다수인이 화재시 화염이나 연기로부터 대피할 수 있도록 하여 귀중한 생명을 보호한다. Multiplex available premises have many rooms with complicate internal structure and it make difficult to the safe evacuation. The purpose of this study is the development of economic fire proof clothes and supply to multiplex available premises to save the people`s lives. Actual fire experiments in the fire laboratory were conducted to measure the fireproof characteristics of fire proof clothes. Also, fire simulation were performed to predict the temperature and fire damage of the fire proof clothes with the FDS program. As a result, the test persons wear the fire proof clothes can be endured at least 8 minutes in the actual fire experiment, and over 11 minutes in case of using portable oxygen.

원예활동 여가프로그램이 농촌노인의 정신건강과 생활만족도에 미치는 영향

This study is to examine in the effectiveness of mental health and life satisfaction for old men after participating horticultural activities leisure program(HALP) in rural communities. The subject is who lives in a town K village, and who is over 60 using village center. Each group consists of experimental and control groups was 20. The methods of statistical analysis used in this study, were Mann-Whitney U-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. From the result in respect of the average variation of mental health and life satisfaction as performing HALP, it showed statistically significant between groups. In regard of the average variation of mental health before and after of performing the HALP, it showed statistically significant within experiment group. Also, in the average variation of life satisfaction before and after of performing the HALP, it showed statistically significant within experiment group.

파일럿 규모의 석탄계 입상활성탄 공정을 이용한 하수처리수 내 유기물질의 제거특성

The purposes of this research were to evaluate the iodine adsorption capacities for four types of granular activated carbon(GAC) and to investigate the removal characteristics of organic matters(TOC, DOC, CODMn), SS and nutrients(T-N, T-P) in secondary effluent of sewage treatment plant located in industrial area by using the pilot-scale coal-based granular activated carbon(C-GAC). The average removal efficiencies of TOC, DOC, CODMn, SS, T-N and T-P were 63.1 %(27.6~84.4 %), 61.0(30.1~82.7) %, 60.0 %(29.1~81.6 %), 74.5 %(10.0~94.1 %), 8.2 %(0.3~23.3 %) and 11.4 %(0.0~20.2 %), respectively. During the pilot plant operation periods, the maximum removal efficiency of TOC was 84.4 %, and the adsorption efficiency gradually decreased to the lowest level of 27.6 %. This research estimates that the proper replacement cycle of the activated carbon considering the target water quality is about 3 months.

Intrinsic Permeation Properties of Graphene Oxide Membranes for Gas and Ion Separations

Graphene oxide (GO) has been considered as a promising membrane material, because of its easy process- ability and distinct properties, including controllable pore size distribution and diffusion channels. Particularly, the feasibility has been proposed a number of simulation results and proof-of-concept experimental approaches towards GO membranes. That is, GO already shows many outstanding intrinsic properties suitable for promising membrane platforms, such as the minimum membrane thickness and the ability to generate nanopores in the two-dimensional lattices or to create slit-like nanochannels between adjacent sheets. This review will be addressed the important experimental development in GO-based membranes for gas and ion separations, emphasizing on intrinsic transport phenomena, and critical issues for practical applications.
