        Technology Education Teachers' Beliefs: Transition across 40 Years in the United States

        The purpose of this study was to investigate Technology Education teachers’beliefs about the “purposes” and “content” of Technology Education instruction in the U.S. In addition, this study provided a longitudinal record of the Technology Education profession over 40 years. An on-line survey was developed and sent separately to middle school and high school Technology Education teachers, who (1) taught within seven selected states in three regions (eastern,mid-west, and western) of the United States; and (2) were members of the International Technology and Engineering Educators’ Association. We developed the instrument items based on previous national surveys and emerging issues in the profession. Findings from this survey were put into historical context by comparing results with the four national surveys covering over 40 years to identify changes in teachers’ beliefs about the purposes, and content of Technology Education as well as to document demographic changes. A number of findings were pertinent to this paper. First, Technology Education is the most frequently used program name followed by a variety of alternate program names;some form of “engineering” appears to be an emerging trend for naming Technology Education programs. Second, the composition of Technology Education teachers and students has become more diverse over time with substantial increases in diversity for the past 10 years. Third, general education purposes such as “develop problem solving skills” are the most frequent purposes teachers identified while vocational type purposes such as “develop skills in using tools and machines” were prominent in previous studies. Finally, Technology Education teachers reported that they believe Technology Education should address “core concepts of technology” taught in the context of design and problem solving. These and other findings are discussed in terms of their impact on Technology Education programs and implications for future development in the profession.

        Selecting Protected Area Using Species Richness

        We created species richness maps of mammals, birds and plants using "Nnational Ecosystem Survey" data and identified correlations between species richness maps of each taxa. We examine the distribution of species richness of each taxa and calculated conservation priority rank through plotting species-area curves using an additive benefit function in Zonation. The conclusions of this study are as follows. First, plant showed high species richness in Gangwon province and Baekdudaegan, and mammals showed high species richness at eastern slope of Baekdudaegan in Gangwon province unusually and the species richness of mammals distributed equally except Gyeonggi and Chungnam province. However, birds showed high species richness in the west costal because the area is the major route of winter migratory birds. Second, correlation of each taxa’s distribution is not significant. Correlation between mammals and birds is positive but correlations between birds and others are negative. Because mammals inhabit in forest but birds mostly live in coastal wetlands and rivers. Therefore, bird’s habitats are not shared with other habitats. Third, the probability of mammals occurrence is very low under 25% in species-area curve, others increase proportionally to area. Birds increase dramatically richness at 10% because bird's habitat is concentrated in coastal wetlands and rivers. Plants increased gently species richness due to large forest in Gangwon province. We can calculate the predicted number of species in curves and plan various conservation strategies using the marginal number of species. Finally, high priority ranks for conservation distributed mainly in Gangwon province and Baekdudaegan. When we compared with priority map and terrestrial national parks, the parks were evaluated as high priority ranks. However, the rank of parks away from Baekdudaegan was low. This study has the meaning of selecting conservation priority area using National Ecosystem Survey. In spite of the omission of survey data in national parks and Baekdudaegan, the results were good. Therefore, the priority rank method using species distribution models is useful to selecting protected areas and improving conservation plans. However, it is needed to select protected areas considering various evaluation factors, such as rarity, connectivity, representativeness, focal species and so on because there is a limit to select protected area only using species richness.

        Correlation between the Korean Version of Asthma Control Test and Health-Related Quality of Life in Adult Asthmatics

        The Asthma Control Test (ACT) is a patient-completed questionnaire developed to assess asthma control. Health-related quality of life (HRQL) in asthmatics has shown relatively low correlations with parameters of asthma control and the relationship between the ACT and HRQL in asthmatics is yet unclear. Because revalidations of translated versions of questionnaires are critical for its utilization, we first sought to validate the Korean version of ACT and then to evaluate the relationship between the ACT and HRQL. Patients (n=117) completed the ACT and asthma-related quality of life questionnaire (AQLQ) at 3 physician visits. Pulmonary function was measured and an asthma specialist rated asthma control. The Korean version of ACT was found to be reliable, valid, and responsive to changes in asthma control over time up to three consecutive visits. ACT scores correlated significantly (p=0.001) with symptoms domain (r=0.72), activity domain (r=0.65), emotional domain (r=0.69), and environmental domain (r=0.67) of AQLQ. In conclusion, the Korean version of the ACT was found to be a reliable and valid tool for measuring asthma control, and to correlate well with AQLQ scores. Moreover, the ACT was responsive to changes in AQLQ scores over time.

        중등학교 기술 수업과 기술 교사에 대한 대학 신입생의 인식

        This study investigated perception of first-year college students who recentlyexperienced technology education in their secondary education for describingcontemporary technology classrooms. To accomplish this goal, survey and in-depthinterview on their technology classrooms were employed. Participants in this studywere 427 first-year college students who began their college life in 2013 and consistedof 224 students enrolled in 10 departments of educational major and 203 students whoenrolled in 9 departments of other colleges. The instrument of this study consisted ofpreference toward technology classrooms and teachers, experience in the secondarytechnology classrooms, perception toward technology teachers, and suggestions fortechnology classrooms with five point Likert scales and open-ended questionnaires. And individual in-depth interviews with 22 volunteers who answered the instrumentand consented the interview process were conducted. Based on the collected data,statistical and theme analyses were performed and the key findings were as follows. First-year students' experiences for technology classrooms were described with thetheme of 'learning contents or activities'(54.4%). And the negative perception towardtechnology classrooms(29.1%) was larger than he positive perception(16.5%). Theperception toward technology classrooms was also presented with two themes ofteaching methods and subject interest. The perception toward technology teacherspresented a medium level preference with several themes of teachers' teachingmethods, teachers' personality, and subject interest. Lecture style method(60.48%) waslargely used in the participants' technology classrooms and problem solving orcollaborative methods was not frequent(19.31%). The participants indicated a need forimproving teaching methods in technology education and suggested sufficientadministration and curriculum supports and transitions of the learning contents. Further studies investigating the diverse public's perception toward technology andtechnology classrooms could be recommended. 이 연구는 중·고등학교 기술교육 현장의 모습을 그리기 위해 최근 중·고등학교에서 기술교육을 직접 받았던 대학생들의 기술교육에 대한 인식을 조사하였다. 이 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위하여 기술수업에 대한 설문지와 심층 면담을 사용하였다. 기술수업에 대한 설문지 참가자는 2013년 입학한 신입생을 대상으로 사범대학생 10개 학과의 224명과 비 사범대학 9개 학과의 203명을 포함한 427명으로 2013년 3월부터 11월까지 실시하였다. 설문지의 내용은 중·고등학교에서의 기술수업과 교사에 대한 선호도, 기술수업에서의 학습경험, 기술교사에 대한 생각, 그리고 기술교육의 개선방향으로 구성되었고 5점 Likert 척도와 개방형 질문으로 조사하였다. 설문조사를마친 후 개인 면담 연구 참가 중 희망자 22명 전원을 개별 면담하였다. 수집된 자료를 기반으로 기술통계와 주제 분석이 이루어졌으며 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 이 연구의 결과 최근 기술교육을 받은 대학 신입생들의 기술수업에 대한 경험은수업 내용 또는 실습 내용으로 표현되고(54.4%), 부정적인 인식(29.1%)이 긍정적인인식(16.5%)보다 높게 나타났다. 기술수업에 대한 인식은 주로 수업 내용 외 수업방법과 그들의 흥미의 주제로 표현되었다. 기술교사에 관한 인식은 보통 수준의 선호도를 보였고 교사의 수업 방법, 교사의 태도 또는 성격, 과목에 대한 흥미의 주제로 표현되었다. 이 연구의 참가자들이 가장 많이 경험한 기술수업에서의 수업방법은강의식 수업(60.48%)이고 문제해결 또는 협동학습은 19.31%였다. 기술교육의 인식향상과 발전을 위해서 가장 먼저 기술수업방법의 변화를 지적하였고, 학습 환경과교육과정의 개선, 학습내용에 대한 변화가 필요하다고 제안하였다. 이 연구의 결과를 토대로 기술과 기술교육에 대한 다양한 대중의 인식에 관한 체계적인 후속 연구가 필요할 것이다.
