        Background: Mutation of Gs protein subunit (gsp oncogene), detected in about 30∼40% of growth hormone (GH)-secreting pituitary tumors, is associated with an increased long-acting somatostatin analog octreotide sensitivity. However, the mRNA expression of somatostatin receptor (sst) was not changed in the GH-secreting pituitary tumor, regardless of whether they were gsp oncogene positive or negative. This suggests that the expression of genes coding for G_i2α, Pit-1 and the other factors involved in the regulation of secretory activity in somatotrophs is likely to be altered in gsp oncogene positive tumors. We observed the impact of the gsp oncogene on the expression of the genes coding for Gi2, Pit-1 and sst (2&5) in GH-secreting pituitary tumors. Methods: The GH response to octreotide was examined in 13 acromegalic patients before transsphenoidal adenomectomy. Genomic DNA and RNA were extracted from fresh frozen tumor tissues. PCR was performed to amplify and sequence the region between codon 184 and 251 that includes exons 8 and 9 of the Gs gene. Sst2, sst5, G_i2α and Pit-1 mRNA levels were measured by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Results: Sst2 and sst5 mRNA transcripts were detected in all tumors (7 gsp +, 6 gsp-). The amount of sst transcripts varied considerably varied between the tumors. There were no significant differences in sex, age, tumor size, grade or basal GH levels. Pit-1 and sst2 mRNA levels were not different. In contrast, G_i2 mRNA levels were significantly higher in gsp (+) while sst5 mRNA levels were higher in gsp (-). Conclusion: These data suggests that gsp oncogene may increase Gi2α levels but decrease sst5 mRNA levels. However, Pit-1 and sst2 mRNA expression may not be affected by gsp oncogene. The increased expression of the G_i2α gene might be an inhibitory compensatory response to the action of gsp oncogene

        This study examines the financial problems in Korean private colleges and universities, especially, in light of student tuition and fees, which are the major sources of instituional revenue. The study points out that the financial problems of the institutions are mainly ascribable to the weak supports from government and private sectors. Accordingly,students enrolled in private colleges and universities are to pay higher tuition and fees in spite of relatively lover quality education in comparison with students in public institutions. The researcher holds the position that the high tuition policy based upon the beneficiary-pay principle is not relevant to higher education because the educational benefits should be regarded as social goods and the opportunity of higher education should be equal regardless student's economic conditions. Therefore, the government and private economic sectors are expected to increase the financial efforts for the private higher education, which is not for the shake of private only.

        This paper analytically compared the water quality data with the effluent flow rate of the pollutent, in Chenju-cheon, during the past fifteen years. 1. The main sorces of pollutron were revealed as the domestic sewage and the industrial wastewater. 2. The yearly average of pollutant concentration has been decreasing but MPN has been incresing for the conversion of flush toilet. 3. ABS concentration has been decresing for the use of soft detergent. 4. The effluent flow rate of discharge was under the control of the geological and topographical property. 5. The discharge rate of BOD and SS was 29% and 6.5% at Hanbukru, 6% and 21% at Dukjinbo, 89% and 69% at Iseongbo.

        배·급수 시스템에서 부식방지제의 적용 평가 연구

        This study evaluated the effect of the corrosion inhibitors on the corrosion control performance in drinking water distribution system. A phosphate-zinc based inhibitor formulated was for the efficient corrosion control in drinking water distribution system. In a continuous-circulation test, 99% reduction in corrosion rate was achieved. The optimum concentration of the corrosion inhibitor was found to be 2.2㎎ PO₄/L. The effect of the corrosion inhibitor was significant for the pipes of carbon steel, galvanized steel and copper, but less for that of stainless steel. The corrosion inhibitor can be an effective cure for corrosion and red water problems by prevention the old pipes from further corrosion. Tap water in Mokpo and Kwangyang were more corrosive than the water in the rest of 4 other regions(Seoul, Pohang, Pusan, Puyeo). Tap water in Pusan was high in various ionic concentrations in general. The corrosion inhibitor reduced the corrosion rate by 76-94%, depending on the origin of the tap water.

        휘발성 용제(본드)흡입 금단증상으로 인한 경련발작 1례

        The authors experienced a case of withdrawal seizure of generalized tonic-clonic type after discontinuation of volatile substance abuse. The seizure was well treated with intravenous injection of 4mg lorazepam. The authors report the case with the review of literatures related to the volatile substance abuse.

      • 지난 6년간(1997~2002) 양산리 소주리 지하수의 수질 조사

        In this research, we investigated the KMnOc, consumption rate, pH, and the contents of major anions of the ground water fron Soju-ri, Yangsan(during the last 6 years 1997~2002). In this area, average rainfall during the last 6 years was 1,618.3 mm and a monthly average 134.85 mm. The KMnO₄ consumption rate was 0~3.7 ppm NO₃-N concentration was 1.3~6.5 ppm SO₄ concentration was 10~83 ppm, CI concentration was 4~60 ppm and NH₃-N corcentration was 0~0.05 ppm. Zn, Al, and Ou concentration were 0~0.999, 0~0.17, and 0~0.043 ppm respectively. As Pb, Cd, and Hg were not detected

        주물공장 근로자에서 발생한 국한성 석면폐증 1예

        배경: 주물공장 근로자에서 발생한 석면폐증의 작업 관련성을 평가하고 그 증례를 보고하고자 한다. 증례: 30년간 주물공장에서 근무한 환자로 인후통, 기침, 노란 가래가 있어 검사한 결과 결핵이 의심되어 치료 하였으며, 치료 중 석면폐증으로 진단되었다. 작업 관련성 평가를 위해 실시한 폐 조직의 조직학적 검사에서 1 cm^(2)당 3개의 석면소체가 발견되었고, 투과전자현미경으로 분석한 석면 함유량은 23.26x10^(6) fibers/g이었다. 결론: 작업환경조사, 폐 조직의 석면 분석 등을 통해 작업 관련성이 높다고 판단하였다. Background: Foundry workers are known to be exposed to silica and have an increased risk of Silicosis. There are also reports that state these foundry workers were associated with asbestos-related change in the X-ray results of the lungs. This report discusses a case of localized asbestosis developed in a foundry worker who worked in 12 Korean foundries. Case report: A 49-year-o1d man who worked at molding and melting for 30 years, Presented with sore throat, cough and yellow sputum for 1 month. From physical and clinical examination, Pulmonary tuberculosis was highly suspicious; therefore, he was medicated for 6 months. After tuberculosis medication, the radiological finding was reactivation of tuberculosis, and an asbestos body was detected at a trans-bronchial lung biopsy. During an operation, operators found multiple palpable masses and bullae 10calized in the right upper lobe (RUL) and performed right upper lobectomy and right middle lobe wedge resection. Using hematoxylin-eosin stain and iron stain, we could detect asbestos bodies by light microscopy. We analyzed the asbestos fiber burden in dry lung tissue by transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (TEM-EDX). The fiber type was chrysotile and the fiber burden was 23.26 x 10^(6) fiber/g dry lung. Discussion: This case study of a foundry worker with localized asbestosis is uncommon in Korea. We found an occupational relationship between the foundry worker and localized asbestosis through various investigative techniques such as measurements taken at his working environment, clinical, radiological and pathological examination of the foundry worker and mineralogical examination of the asbestos fiber.

        Modified Hogan 법을 이용한 범인두 부전 환자의 인두피판 성형술

        A competent velopharyngeal sphincter is essential for intelligible speech. If the velopharyngeal incompetence exist, the seal will not be complete during speech, with a resultant hypernasal speech quality. The patient with velopharyngeal incompetence(VPI) may develope other compensatory speech problems. There are many approaches available to correct veolpharyngeal incompetence, which include speech therapy, push back palatorrhaphy, pharyngeal wall implants and pharyngoplasty. This is cases report of velopharyngeal incompetence, which were successfully treated by superiorly based pharyngeal flap, covered with splitted hinge flap of nasal lining mucosa of the soft palate, named modified Hogan method. The advantages of this method are precision in the approximation of the flap due to pentagonal shaped flap design, good flood supply due to omission of the midsagittal incision on nasal lining mucosa, and simplicity than Hogan method.

      • 미세공정상에서 전가산기의 해석 및 비교

        In this paper the main topologies of one-bit full adders, including the most interesting of those recently proposed, are analyzed and compared for speed, power consumption, and power-delay product. The comparison has been performed on circuits, optimized transistor dimension to minimize power-delay product. The investigation has been carried out with properly defined simulation runs on a Cadence environment using a 0.25-μw process, also including the parasitics derived from layout. Performance has been also compared for different supply voltage values. Thus design guidelines have been derived to select the most suitable topology for the design features required. This paper also proposes a novel figure of merit to realistically compare n-bit adders implemented as a chain of one-bit full adders. The results differ from those previously published both for the more realistic simulations carried out and the more appropriate figure of merit used. They show that, except for short chains of blocks or for cases where minimum power consumption is desired, topologies with only pass transistors or transmission gates are not attractive. In contrast. the most interesting implementations in terms of trade off between power and delay are the traditional CMOS and Mirror topologies. Moreover, the CPL allow the best speed performance.

        In this investigation the PFM(Pulse Frequency Modulation) will be used for optimizing PWM inverter pulse patterns. In traditional the pulse frequency of PWM is kept constant. But modulated PWM's frequency in this study, the sinusoidal inverter's performance should be improved. The PWM pulse patterns are definitely controlled so that the time-integral function of the voltage vectors in the space vector notation may show a circular locus. Further, performance index will be minimized because of minimizing distortion of output current. Finally, these theories are realized using single-chip microprocessor.
