Objective: Quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) has been increasingly used to evaluate patients with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between qEEG data and symptom severity in patients with ADHD. Methods: Fifteen patients with ADHD and 20 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. Electroencephalography was assessed in the resting-state, and qEEG data were obtained in the eyes-closed state. The Korean version of the ADHD Rating Scale (K-ARS) and continuous performance tests (CPTs) were used to assess all participants. Results: Theta-band (4-7 Hz) power across the brain was significantly positively correlated with inattention scores on the K-ARS, reaction times and commission errors on the CPTs in ADHD patients. Gamma-band (31-50 Hz) power was significantly positively correlated with the results of the auditory CPTs in ADHD patients. The theta/alpha (8-12 Hz) and theta/beta (13-30 Hz) ratios were significantly negatively correlated with commission and omission errors on auditory CPTs in ADHD patients. No significant correlations between qEEG relative power and K-ARS and CPT scores were observed in HCs. Conclusion: Our results suggest that qEEG may be a useful adjunctive tool in patients with ADHD.

Objective To determine the effects of an integrated training device for strength and balance on extremity muscle strength, postural balance, and cognition in older adults using a combination with various rehabilitation training games, in which balance, strength, and cognitive training were configured in a single device. Methods This prospective study included 20 healthy participants aged 65–85 years. Participants trained for 30 minutes daily, 3 days weekly, for 6 weeks with an integrated training device for strength and balance (SBT-120; Man&Tel Inc., Gumi, Korea). Main outcomes were measured using the Korean Mini-Mental State Examination (K-MMSE), Korean version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (K-MoCA), Timed Up and Go Test (TUG), Functional Reach Test (FRT), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and Manual Muscle Test. Measurements were taken at three time points: T0 (pretreatment), T1 (immediately after treatment), and T2 (4 weeks after treatment). Results All 20 patients completed the training, and TUG, FRT, and BBS scores significantly improved at T1 and T2 compared to T0. Mean TUG scores decreased by 0.99±2.00 at T1 and 1.05±1.55 at T2 compared to T0. Mean FRT scores increased by 6.13±4.26 at T1 and 6.75±4.79 at T2 compared to T0. BBS scores increased by 0.60±0.94 at T1 and 0.45±1.15 at T2 compared to T0. Moreover, muscle strength and cognition (K-MMSE and K-MoCA scores) increased after training. Conclusion Our findings suggest that an integrated training device for strength and balance can be a safe and useful tool for older adults.

Objective: Frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) of electroencephalography (EEG) has been studied to differentiate patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) from healthy controls (HC). However, inconsistent results have been obtained thus far. Suicidal ideation (SI) has been known to alter frontal lobe activity, and could be an important covariate in FAA studies. This study aimed to explore the influence of FAA on the relationship among MDD patients with SI and without SI, and HC. Methods: Sixty-seven patients with MDD (44 without and 23 with SI) and 60 HCs were recruited. Resting state EEG was recorded with their eyes open, and FAA as a lateralized index of alpha power was calculated in the frontal brain region. Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety and Depression scores were estimated. Results: FAA was higher (increased alpha power in the left frontal region) in the MDD group than in the HC group. The FAA was lower (reduced alpha power in the left frontal region) in MDD patients with SI than in MDD patients without SI. The severity of depression and anxiety symptoms were significantly correlated with FAA only in MDD patients with SI. SI moderated the effects of depressive symptom on FAA in the MDD group. Conclusion: Our results suggest that SI is a clinically important moderator of frontal alpha asymmetry in patients with MDD.

Synthetic oviduct fluid(SOF)를 이용한 소 수정란의 배양에 관한 연구

The present study carried out to determine the developmental capacity of bovine oocytes matured in epidermal growth factor(EGF)-containing medium, the developmental competence of bovine embryos using synthetic oviduct fluid(SOF) and the effect of glucose on the development of bovine embryos. In experiment 1, oocytes, obtained from abattoir ovaries, were matured in EGF-containing medium for 24 hours, followed by exposure to Korean native cattle spermatozoa for 18 hours and cultured by utilizing co-culture system with bovine oviduct epithelial cells(BOEC) in TCM199. In experiment 2, early bovine embryos were cultured in SOF with or without BOEC and compared with those in TCM199 with BOEC. In experiment 3, bovine embryos were cultured in the presence or absence of glucose. Seven and ten days after in vitro fertilization, developmental competence of embryos were evaluated. The rate of cleavage was significantly(P<0.05) higher in EGF-containing maturation medium(70.0%) than in control(57.7%). The rates of development to morulae and blastocysts were 30.6% and 23.3% there was no significant difference between them. The rates of in vitro fertilized embryos to morulae and blastocysts cultured in SOF with BOEC(30.4%) and in TCM199 with BOEC(38.0%) were significantly(P<0.01) higher than cultured in SOF without BOEC(13.4%) at seven days after in vitro fertilization. The rates of embryos to blastocysts cultured in SOF with BOEC(29.4%) and in TCM199 with BOEC(35.9%) were significantly(P<0.05) higher than cultured in SOF without BOEC(13.4%) at ten days after in vitro fertilization. The rates of early embryos to morulae and blastocysts cultured in the presence or absence of glucose were 12.2% and 17.5% each other, there was no significant difference between them. The results show that bovine oocytes matured in the presence of EGF can cleave better, SOF with BOEC can replace serum containing complex media, TCM199 with BOEC in bovine embryo culture and glucose have little effect on the culture of early bovine embryos.

본 연구는 초등학생들의 독서성향척도의 개발과 측정척도의 타당화를 위해 실시하였으며, 초등생들의 독서교육이나 아동의 교수-학습프로그램을 설계하는데 도움을 주고자 하는데 연구의 목적이 있다. 기존 연구들은 독서태도(읽기태도), 독서동기(읽기 동기) 및 독서지수 등에 대한 개념 등으로 연구자에 따라서 다양하게 정의됨으로써 교육현장에 적용하는데 있어서 혼선의 여지가 있었다. 따라서 독서행동에 대한 포괄적 개념의 조작적 정의와 척도연구가 필요하였다. 이에 따라 선행 연구에서 제안된 문항들 중 72문항을 1차 추출하였고, 최종 45문항으로 서울소재 초등학교 500명의 학생들에게 설문조사를 하여 탐색적 요인분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 독서태도, 독서기피성향, 경쟁적독서, 동료와 상호작용, 부모와 상호작용, 독서의 즐거움 및 독서의 목적의식의 7요인 29문항의 독서성향척도(RDQ)를 개발하였다. 또한 본 척도의 타당화를 위해서 서울 소재 초등학생들 309명을 대상으로 확인적 요인분석을 실시하였으며, 독서성향척도(RDQ)의 7요인 구성요인이 타당한 것으로 나타났다. This study was conducted to explore the comprehensive structure of elementary student``s reading disposition and to examine its reliability and validity. Study 1 exploratory factor analysis. A pool of preliminary items were selected, based on the past research used. The exploratory factor analysis of Reading Disposition Questionnaire(RDQ) was conducted in order to assess the underlying structure of the instrument. For this study, data was collected from 500 elementary students by survey questionnaires. The result showed 7 factors, 29 items. Study 2 conducted to verify the validity of RDQ based on confirmatory factor analysis. For this study, data was collected from 309 elementary students by survey questionnaires. The result indicated a satisfactory fit for the 7-factor model of RDQ, and a secondary factor analysis revealed that the 7-factors were well converged into the higher factor of the whole reading disposition. Finally, implications and limitations of these results were discussed.

<P><B>Objective</B></P><P>To identify potential imaging biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease by combining brain cortical thickness (CThk) and functional connectivity and to validate this model's diagnostic accuracy in a validation set.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Data from 98 subjects was retrospectively reviewed, including a study set (n = 63) and a validation set from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (n = 35). From each subject, data for CThk and functional connectivity of the default mode network was extracted from structural T1-weighted and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging. Cortical regions with significant differences between patients and healthy controls in the correlation of CThk and functional connectivity were identified in the study set. The diagnostic accuracy of functional connectivity measures combined with CThk in the identified regions was evaluated against that in the medial temporal lobes using the validation set and application of a support vector machine.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Group-wise differences in the correlation of CThk and default mode network functional connectivity were identified in the superior temporal (<I>p</I> < 0.001) and supramarginal gyrus (<I>p</I> = 0.007) of the left cerebral hemisphere. Default mode network functional connectivity combined with the CThk of those two regions were more accurate than that combined with the CThk of both medial temporal lobes (91.7% vs. 75%).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Combining functional information with CThk of the superior temporal and supramarginal gyri in the left cerebral hemisphere improves diagnostic accuracy, making it a potential imaging biomarker for Alzheimer's disease.</P>
