Henry James was neglected, even ridiculed, towards the end of his career. But as soon as he died he was praised by T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound as ‘a prominent intelligence.' In the 1920's James was attacked harshly by Brooks, Forster, and Muir, and finally the critical harshness arrived its highest point when Orlo Williams argued that James disdained man's natural passion. But in this period Percy Lubbock had a fair comment on James as a forerunner of modern techniques such as ‘scene,’ ‘picture,’ and ‘point of view.’ In the 1930's James recovered his popularity a little. Kelly, Rouke and Blackmur had an eye to James's works in a right way. And during the mid-century James's study had been in its prime being called the “James boom.” He was beginning to be considered as one of the ‘great English novelists’ by F. R. Leavis, and praised as a forerunner of international awareness by Matthiessen. In the late 1950's James took a firm position as a writer. Even though in the 1960's Geismar's attack on James and his critical defenders was far and away the most vicious since Brooks, and books on specific subjects had been numerous in the 1970's and 1980's. Some dealt with themes, others with techniques, still others with special theses. A number of recent critics concentrate on his affinities with Modernists: among them are S. B. Purdy, S. Perosa, and S. Hutchinson. And James's greatness comes from the duration of his career and volume of his productions, the clarity of his characters, and the mixture of tragic and comic intuitions in his works.

In Henry James novels such male characters as Rowland Mallet, Ralph Touchett, and John Marcher show evasive gestures to women when confronted with marriage problems. So many accuse James of avoiding the passion of love. But nowadays critic like Philip Sicker defends James's love as a passion of showing, as in James's symbolic observation, 'the boots and shoes that we see in the corridors of promiscuous hotels, standing, often in double pairs, at the doors of room's more than actual descriptions of sexual encounters. In The Portrait of a Lady, Ralph Touchett who is passive in his every day life always only watches Isabel Archer's life without showing any direct love. His habitual desire is to maintain distance between himself and the object of his adoration, Isabel. By doing so, he is able to keep his love-image perfect. Ralph loves Isabel indirectly and treats her not as an object but as a true beauty. Though some argue Ralph interferes in Isabel's life, he shows his generous love disinterestedly by way of bestowing his money to her in order to meet her requirements of imagination. Finally he confesses his true love on his death bed. In conclusion, Ralph's expression of his love style becomes a virtual definition of 'living.' For example, it is his love for Isabel alone that prolongs his ife; it is Strether's fascination with Madame de Vionnet in The Ambassadors that inspires his impassioned advice of 'live, live all you can.' Thus James portrays love as an image worshiped in the mind. A courtly lover does not love an actual woman, but rather a feminine ideal that crystalizes his dream of being in love.

This study was performed to investigate the effect of adaptation of snoring appliance on the change of size of pharyngeal space and position of the mandible, hyoid bone and the tongue, and to determine the least amount of mandibular anterior positioning, which can be used for treating of concomitant temporomandibular disorders(TMD) and snoring. For the study, 40 dental students were selected. They had no signs and symptoms of TMD except slight joint sound and also had no signs and symptoms of snoring. Two types of intraoral appliance were fabricated : mandibular anterior positioning splint(APS), commonly used for patients with TMD, and mandibular advancement device(MAD), which is one of major types of snoring appliance. The mean distance of mandibular advancement by each appliance was 3mm and 5mm, respectively. Cephalometric radiographs were taken in the three mandibular position, namely, without appliance, with APS, and with MAD, and were traced for the selected twenty-one items, related to cervical posture, size of pharyngeal space, and position of the mandible, hyoid bone and the tongue. The data were processed with SPSS windows?? program for the change of each item by intraoral device, the correlation among items, and the difference of change between high and low group divided by some parameters. The result obtained were as follows : 1. Increase of pharyngeal space(PS-A2) corresponding to nasopharynx, anterior inferior movement of the mandible, and increase of distance from palate to posterior part of dorsum of tongue were observed by adaptation of intraoral devices, especially by MAD. 2. Correlation among CVT angle, ABaB angle, mandibular plane angle, and PS-A2 were statistically significant in all the three mandibular position. There were positive correlation among CVT angle, ABaB angle, mandibular plane angle, meanwhile, these items showed negative correlation with PS-A2. 3. When all the subjects were divided into high and low group according to mean value of some parameters such as CVT angle, ABaB angle, and mandibular plane angle in ordinary position, low group generally showed more significant change by intraoral devices than high group did.

저영양성 미생물을 선택적으로 분리, 배양하여 새로운 생리활성물질을 탐색하던 중 SA-246 균주가 강한 항균활성 및 암세포주에 대한 세포독성을 나타내는 것을 발견하였다. SA-246 균주의 동정을 위하여 배양적, 형태적, 생리적 특성을 ISP 방법에 따라 조사한 결과 Micromonospora 屬에 속하는 것으로 동정하였으며 따라서 Micromonospora sp. SA-246으로 명명하였다. 배양액으로 부터 용매추출, silica gel column chromatography, preparative TLC, HPLC 등에 의하여 활성물질을 분리, 정제하였으며 UV 흡수, mass, NMR spectrum의 분석 결과 본 활성물질을 crisamicin A로 동정하였다. 화합물 SA-246은 그람 양성 세균에 항균활성을, 폐암세포주(A549), 난포암세포주(SK-OV-3), 피부암세포주(SK-MEL-2), 신경암세포주(XF498), 대장암세포주(HCT15)에 세포독성을 나타내었다. In the course of screening for new bioactive compounds from oligotrophs in soil, a microorganism, designated as SA-246 and now identified as Micromonospora sp., has been shown to produce a strong anitbacterial compound. The active compound was purified from broth filtrate by ethylacetate extraction, silica gel column chromatography, preparative TLC and HPLC, and was identified as crisamicin A based on mass and NMR spectral data. The compound SA-246 exhibited not only strong anitbacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria but also cytotoxicity against cancer cell lines such as A549 (lung), SK-OV-3 (ovarian), SK-MEL-2 (melanoma), XF498 (central nervous system) and HCT15 (colon).

경기조건과 결과 지식이 사회적 태만에 미치는 영향

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the identifiability of performance result and compectitive condition on social loafing. The subjects were 48(16 groups) undergraduate female students. Experiment was conducted in a 2×3 ANOVA with repeated measures, the major independent variables being compectitive condition and the indentifiability. The dependent variable as strength output of the individual performance and group performance. The results of this study were as follows : 1. Between the identifiability group and the unidentifiability group, there was significant difference of the result of the performance. 2. Significant performance results existed between compectitive condition and non-competitive condition. 3. Non-significant interaction effect between identifiability and competition was evidenced. These results suggested a conclusion a conclusion that the identifiability of individual performance is a more critical variable which determines the social loafing, while competition also influences social loafing.

생활한복의 상의 원형에 관한 소고

To exhibit the basic patterns of upper garments of ideal Seng-Whal-Hanbok (Korean everyday dresses), with the investigations of their characteristics, the needful measurements and calculated values between Hanbok (Korean traditional dresses) and Seng-Whal-Hanbok were compared with each other following the presentation of their drafting methods. Results are as follows. First, as the general characteristics of Seng-Whal-Hanboks, their collar shapes, length of upper garment, and curved line of trimming parts were commented. Second, as the results from the needful measurements, both Jugori(upper garment of Hanbok) and upper garment of Seng-Whal-Hanbok were in need of the measurements of their chest circumference, back length and Wha-Jang (length up to the wrist born from cervical vertebral). As results from calculated values, Seng-Whal-Hanboks have more than enough space in the width of gill (waist), longer in their lengths and lower armpit point of Jin-Dong(armhole) consequently leading to the sufficient and comfortable feeling Third, it was considered that the basic patterns of ideal Seng-Whal- Hanboks have differences in the space added to B/4 in accordance with the length of upper garments, changes in the circumference of Jin-Dong and the front drooping (2.5-3cm) shorter than that of the short upper garments (4.0-5.0 cm) in their slopings. This is that the front drooping is largely necessary when their lengths of upper garments are short, while the small front droopings are given when their lengths become long. Instead of possible darts in the basic patterns of dresses in Western style, a sufficient front drooping (sloping) was given to the patterns with the treatment of the trimmings with curved lines. We also drafted our special front width able to arrange their front openings, leaving sufficient spaces for Seng-Whal-Hanbok instead of outer collar with enough space for the basic patterns of Jugori in Hanbok..
