        Potential of Lilium lancifolium in Alleviating Pain and Inflammation in a Rat Model of Monosodium Iodoacetate-Induced Osteoarthritis

        Lilium lancifolium (LL) is widely cultivated in East Asia and used to attenuate airway diseases. Our current study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of LL on pain level and inflammatory response in a rat model of monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis (OA). We first examined the effect of LL on inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory mediators in IL-1β-treated HTB-94 cells. The LL extract was found to significantly inhibit the levels of Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-8 (IL-8), and prostaglandin-E2 (PGE-2) in Interleukin-1 β (IL-1β)-stimulated HTB-94 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, chronic oral administration of LL effectively restored the weight-bearing distribution in the rat model of MIA-induced OA. In addition, administration of LL inhibited inflammatory cytokines and inflammatory mediators, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), IL-6, leukotriene B4 (LTB-4), PGE-2, and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Our findings collectively suggested LL as one of the potential therapeutic agents for OA, owing to its properties of reducing pain and inflammatory responses.

      • Threshold Rigidity Values for the Asbestos-like Pathogenicity of High-Aspect-Ratio Carbon Nanotubes in a Mouse Pleural Inflammation Model

        <P>The qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the physicochemical parameters associated with the pathogenicity of high-aspect-ratio nanomaterials is important for comprehensive regulation efforts and safety-by-design approaches. Here, we report quantitative data on the correlations between the rigidity of these nanomaterials and toxicity endpoints <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. As measured by new ISO standards published in 2017, rigidity shows a strong positive correlation with inflammogenic potential, as indicated by inflammatory cell counts and IL-1β (a biomarker for frustrated phagocytosis) levels in both the acute and chronic phases. <I>In vitro</I> experiments using differentiated THP-1 cells find that only highly rigid multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and asbestos fibers lead to piercing and frustrated phagocytosis. Thus, this study suggests a bending ratio of 0.97 and a static bending persistence length of 1.08 as threshold rigidity values for asbestos-like pathogenicity. However, additional research using MWCNTs with rigidity values that lie between those of non-inflammogenic (<I>D</I><SUB>b</SUB> = 0.66 and SBPL = 0.87) and inflammogenic fibers (<I>D</I><SUB>b</SUB> = 0.97 and SBPL = 1.09) is required to identify more accurate threshold values, which would be useful for comprehensive regulation and safety-by-design approaches based on MWCNTs.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • 전침 자극에 의한 오디 괄약근 운동성 변화에 관한 연구

        Background/Aims: This study was designed to evaluated the effects of electroacupuncture on the sphincter of Oddi (SO) motility in humans and to correlate the manometric findings with plasma cholecystokinin (CCK) levels. Methods: Eleven patients (M: F= 5: 6) who had various kinds of biliary disorders were enrolled. SO motility was monitored with a conventional low-compliant continuously perfused technique using ERCP (n=9) or percutaneous transhepatic cholangioscope (n=2). After baseline monitoring for phasic wave contractions of SO, electroacupuncture was applied at a specific acupoint, GB 34, in these 11 patients. A nonspecific acupoint 5 cm away from GB 34 was selected as a control. Manometric parameters of SO were also checked in 6 subjects during stimulation of the control acupoint. CCK plasma levels were measured during the time course of electroacupuncture stimulation. Result: All the manometric parameters including the basal pressure of SO, amplitude, frequency and duration of phasic wave contraction of SO were significantly decreased (p< 0.05) during electroacupuncture stimulation. The inhibition of SO contractility was accompanied by increased CCK plasma levels. After removal of electroacupuncture stimulation, restoration of amplitude and duration to basal condition were noted. A tendency towards the return of SO contractility was also observed in basal pressure and frequency. Stimulation of the control acupoint, however, did not affect the SO contractility and plasma CCK levels. Conclusions: Electroacupuncture stimulation of acupoint GB 34 showed reversible inhibition of SO contraction in humans. We speculate that the response of SO to electroacupuncture stimulation may be mediated by some neurohormonal mechanisms including CCK release.         관절3호방이 인간 섬유아세포양 활막세포조직에 미치는 연구

        Objectives : Gwanjul-bang(Guanjie-fang)-3 (GJB-3) is a prescription used clinically to treat rheumatoid arthritis. The purpose of this study is to investigate the immunity responses of GJB-3 to the human fibroblast-like synoviocytes isolated from patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods : Experimental groups were divided into 6 groups ; The hFLS were stimulated with hrTNF-α(100 ng/ml) and hrIL-1β(10 U/ml). Afterwards, They were treated with medium (CT), methotrexate (10㎍/ml, MTX) and GJB-3 (1, 10, 100㎍/ml) for 6 hours. The cells were harvested following the further incubation with [3H]-thymidine reagent for 4 hours. The WT group was cultured without cytokine stimulation. Results : 1. The proliferation of hFLSs was significantly reduced in 100㎍/ml dose. 2. The mRNA expression of TNF-α and the production of ROS was dose-dependently reduced in hFLS. 3. The mRNA expression of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, ICAM-1, NOS-Ⅱ, MMP-3 were reduced in high concentration. 4. The production of NO was significantly reduced in over 10㎍/ml dose. 5. The mRNA expression of TIMP-1 was dose-dependently increased. Conclusions : We found out that GJB-3 is considered to be effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis.

      • 외상성 부정 교합의 교정에 관한 연구

        외상성 부정 교합의 교정에 있어서 다양한 수술술식을 이용하여 적절한 교합개선과 하안면부의 심미적 개선의 효과를 얻을 수 있었다. The character of modern society's trauma is a large probability of multiple and severe trauma, specially, the fetal damage accompanied by facial bone fracture. We observed the malocclusion owing to delayed prompt treatment. If the fractured fragments is crushed severely, it is being difficult to make them positioned into the normal anatomical states, to fix them tightly. Post-traumatic malocclusion are usually caused by delayed treatment and inadequate anatomic reduction. Inadequately treated facial bone fractures result in facial disfiguring and functional impairment of mastication and speech. We performed 27cases of the correction of post-traumatic malocclusion between April 1994 and June 1996. We used various operative techniques such as anterior segmental osteotomy, Le Fort osteotomy, Maxillary segmental osteotomy and mandibular sagittal split osteotomy. If the malocclusion was due to disarrangement of teeth toward the appropriately arranged skeletal base, we usually take the method of alveolar segmental osteotomy. If that malocclusion came from not acceptable skeletal bone, we take maxillary segmental osteotomy or mandibular sagittal split osteotomy. We acquired the desirable occlusion at first then, and make the fixation between mandible and maxillary skeletal bones with the bite block. The aim of the correction of malocclusion was to creat a harmony of centric relation and centric occlusion. After operation, intermaxillary fixation with bite block have many advantages of treatment in malocclusion.

        Amid a flurry of publicity and lobbying, the United State has enacted a sweeping new act, known as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, intended to regulate practices perceived to have resulted in recent accounting and other corporate abuses, and therefore to restore investor confidence in the US securities markets. The new Act applies to all companies whose securities are registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission(SEC) and which are required to file financial statements with the SEC. This includes many corporations not domiciled in the United States (so called foreign private issuers) whose securities trade publicly in the Unite Stated. The new Act establishes significant new disclosure regulations and will impose substantive rules of internal corporate governance including establishment of Public Company Accounting Oversight Board in areas not previously regulated by US federal authorities. The Act also requires chief executive officers and chief financial officers of registered issuers to certify the completeness and accuracy of their company's financial statements with the Sec. In addition, The new Act provides for substantial new regulation of the conduct of audits and in issuer's relationship with its public accounting firm and creates new criminal offenses for false executive certifications, securities fraud, the obstruction of justice, and actions against whistle blowers. It substantially increases the penalties for existing US criminal offences such as mail fraud and wire fraud.

      • 고도보정 공간내삽에 의한 전국의 1km²단위 기상실황 추정

        Conventional method of generating meteorological surfaces over geographic areas often neglects the elevation effect which is considered to be a single most important control over local climate. Deviation of the estimates may exrled practical limits at some areas with complex toprlgraphy. A digital map featuring coordinates and elevation data of 72 weather stations in Korea were joined with hourly weather(trmperature, relative humidity, precipitation and wind speed) observations at the stations by using a geographic information system software. An inverse distanre weighted interpolation was done on the point features to generate prim-itive meteorological and elevation surface grids consisting of 430×600 cells, respectively. Elevation difference at each cell between the United States Geological Survey's 1 km digital elevation model and this virtual ele-vation surface was calculated. Known relationships between meteorological elements and the elevation differ-ence were used to derive "correction grids" representing the potential effects of elevation difference at each grid cell. The correction grids were added or multiplied to the primitive meteorological surfaces to obtain ele-vation-corrected estimates for corresponding elements. This srheme was applied to hourly data of 27 March 1998 to generate the elevation-corrected mrteorological surfaces. Observed data of 350 automated weather sta-tions were used to partially validate the accuracy of the results. This simple scheme sHelved a feasibility of a near-real time generation of hourly meteorological surfaces for temperature and rainfall with an affordable error range.

        In addition to accurate position and velocity control, force control is necessary for a successful robot operation. In this paper, we have designed a simple robot gripper using a DC motor. For its force control, a current feedback control law is presented without using additional force sensors. Experimental results prove the effectiveness of the proposed control law. A digital controller is also developed with a TMS320LF2406 processor.
