        Ethanol Extract of Ganoderma lucidum Augments Cellular Anti-oxidant Defense through Activation of Nrf2/HO-1

        Objectives: The mushroom Ganoderma lucidum has been widely used as a traditional herbal medicine for many years. Although several studies have focused on the anti-oxidative activity of this mushroom, the molecular mechanisms underlying its activity have not yet been clearly established. The present study investigated the cytoprotective effect of ethanol extract of Ganoderma lucidum (EGL) against oxidative stress (hydrogen peroxide, $H_2O_2$) and elucidated the underlying mechanisms in a C2C12 myoblast cell line. Methods: Oxidative stress markers were determined by using the comet assay to measure reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) damage. Cell viability and Western blotting analyses were employed to evaluate the cellular response to EGL and $H_2O_2$ in C2C12 cells. Transfection with nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-specific small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) was conducted to understand the relationship between Nrf2 expression and $H_2O_2$-induced growth inhibition. Results: The results showed that EGL effectively inhibited $H_2O_2$-induced growth and the generation of ROS. EGL markedly suppressed $H_2O_2$-induced comet-like DNA formation and phosphorylation of histone H2AX at serine 139 ($p-{\gamma}H2AX$), a widely used marker of DNA damage, suggesting that EGL prevented $H_2O_2$-induced DNA damage. Furthermore, the EGL treatment effectively induced the expression of Nrf2, as well as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), with parallel phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of Nrf2 in the C2C12 myoblasts. However, zinc protoporphyrin IX, a HO-1 inhibitor, significantly abolished the protective effects of EGL against $H_2O_2$-induced accumulation of ROS and reduced cell growth. Notably, transient transfection with Nrf2-specific siRNA attenuated the cytoprotective effects and HO-1 induction by EGL, indicating that EGL induced the expression of HO-1 in an Nrf2-dependent manner. Conclusion: Collectively, these results demonstrate that EGL augments the cellular anti-oxidant defense capacity through activation of Nrf2/HO-1, thereby protecting C2C12 myoblasts from $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative cytotoxicity.

        Kim Choon Min, Chang Nam Kee and Chung Whan Ho: Decomposition rate of plant residue and the vertical distibution of mineral nutrients in the woodland soil. The relationship between decomposition rate of litter and the amount of mineral nutrients dispersed to the soil horizons were studied on the oak and pine forest stand. The results are as follows: 1. Decomposition rate of litter was highest in the F horizon of the oak stand, however in the pine stand it was highest in H horizon. 2. The correlation coefficients between decomposition rate and humus, organic carbon, moisture content, calcium, phosphorus, and nitrogen in the pine stand are; 0.90, 0.98, 0.76, 0.98, and 0.88, in oak stand; 0.97, 0.93, 0.92, 0.97, 0.74 and 0.73. 3. Factors which affect the decomposition rate of litter are humus, organic carbon, moisture content, calcium, phosphorus and nitrogen. 4. Among the variables, PH, moisture content and phosphorus under the oak and pine forest showed significant differences in each horizon. 5. C/N ratio of pine stands is higher than that of oak stands studied. 6. The vertical distribution of mineral nutrients is highly related with the amount of humus accumulated on top soil.

      • 조직학적 진단된 chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis 2예

        CNPA는 기존의 폐질환 및 폐절제술로 인해 국소방어기전에 저하가 있거나 비특이적 전신면역상태저하를 갖고 있는 환자들에게서 주로 발생하는 만성적인 공동성 폐질환이다. 현재까지 우리나라에서는 CNPA의 보고가 없는 상태이고, 저자들은 최근 조직학적으로 진단된 CNPA 2예를 경험하였기에 보고하는 바이다. 저자들이 경험한 CNPA 환자들은 만성알코올 중독 및 기관지확장증과 같은 기저질환과 폐절제술을 받은 병력이 있었다. Aspergillus가 폐실질을 침윤하고 있는 조직소견과 조직배양에서 Aspergillus가 검출되어 조직학적 진단이 가능하였고, amphotericin B의 정주요법 및 경구 itraconazole 투여와 폐절제술 등으로 성공적으로 치료되었다. 아직 많은 임상의들에게는 낯선 질환인 CNPA의 치료성적은 환자의 동반질환 및 CNPA 자체의 중증도, 진단과 치료 시작의 지연 등에 의해 크게 좌우되므로 만성적으로 진행하는 공동성 폐병변을 갖고 있는 환자에게서 CNPA를 감별하는 것이 중요하다. Chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis (CNPA) is a chronic cavitary form of pulmonary aspergillosis. Dozens of CNPA cases have been reported in patients with systemic immunologic dysfunction or altered local defense mechanism from preexisting pulmonary disease. Review of literatures revealed that no CNPA cases have been reported in Korea yet. We experienced two cases of CNPA proven by lung biopsy. A 53-year-old alcoholic male in poor nutritional state was admitted with generalized weakness and weight loss. Chest CT revealed a cavitary nodule surrounded with ground-glass attenuation. CT-guided fine needle aspiration and biopsy was done. The biopsy specimen demonstrated dichotomously branching septated hyphae consistent with those of Aspergillus sp. Another case was a 39-year-old man with bronchiectasis who was admitted with persistent hemoptysis. He had a past history of pulmonary tuberculosis. A parahilar lesion with intracavitary soft tissue mass was incidentally detected in high-resolution GT. Left lingular segmentectomy was done due to uncontrolled hemoptysis and CNPA was histologically diagnosed. Both patients were successfully treated with intravenous amphotericin B followed by oral itraconazole. Even though CNPA is unfamiliar to most clinicians, it should be included in differential diagnoses of chronic progressive cavitary pulmonary lesion, especially in patients with immunologic dysfunction.

        저자들은 척수압박으로 하지마비를 보인 환자에서 수술 후에 급성 백혈병에 동반된 과립구성 육종으로 진단된 환자 1례를 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Granulocytic sarcoma(GS) is an uncommon tumor composed of immature cells of the granulocytic series. Most case of GS occur in the course of acute leukemia and the blast crisis of chronic leukemia, Rarely, however, it may present before leukemia becomes clinically apparent. It may also occur in patients with myeloproliferative disoders. GS has been reported that it occurs in 3% to 9% of patients with acute myelogenous leukemia(AML) and the incidence of GS is reported to be higher in patients with t(8;21). GS occurs relatively commonly in africa and has been reported to affect 10-25% of black children presenting with AML. This is very rare case of granulocytic sarcoma with AML(FAB M5) presented with spinal cord compression which was supported by decompression laminectomy.

      • 기능성척추측만증에 근막이완요법 및 전침치료 증례

        목적 : 우리는 신체를 근막의 통합된 전체로 보는 근막이완요법과 TrP를 파괴하는 전침요법을 기능성 척추측만증에 적용시킬수 있는지 알아보았다. 방법 : 22세의 기능성 척추측만증을 가진 남성에게 다양한 형태의 근막이완요법을 적용하였고, 중둔근, 요방형근, 슬괵근에 전침요법을 적용하였다. 결과 : 3주시술후 다리길이차이, 근막구축, Cobb's 각과 척추회전변위가 감소되었고 흉부압박감 같은 전신적증상이 호전되었다. 결론 : 근막이완요법과 전침병행치료가 신체를 근막의 일체로 보는 관점으로 인체의 구조적불균형을 바로 잡아줄수 있는 새로운 치료법의 기능성을 찾았다. Objective: We investigated this study in order to see the adaptation capability of myofascial release that translating the body being integrated fascial totality and electroacupuncture treatment that breaking trigger points in functional scoliosis. Methods: We applied myofascial relase by three patterns and electroacupuncture in TrPs of gluteus medius, Quadratus lumborum and Hamstring muscle to 22 year-old who have had functional scoliosis. Results: After 3 weeks, The leg length, fascial restriction. Cobb's angle and rotation scoliosis are decreased. Systemic symptoms, for example; chest discomfort are improved. conclusion: Myofascial release and electroacupuncture treatment is new methods that treating the sturctural unbalance in view of body's fascial network.

        The coordinates of Laue spots on the x-ray camera film are calculated in consideration of a rotated crystal plane and the Laue patterns of face centered cubic structure are simulated by the personal computer about (111), (110) and (100) planes. The orientation of a crystal plane rapidly can be determined from a film by comparison with the computer results.

        티타늄과 금합금, 은-팔라듐합금 및 니켈-크롬 합금의 접촉시 부식에 관한 연구

        The Purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of area ratio, the difference of the corrosion rate according to the elapsed time, and corrosion reaction on titanium in contact with gold alloy, silver-palladium alloy, and nickel-chromium alloy by measuring the amount of metal elements released in the artificial saliva using Inductively Coupled Plasma Emission Spectroscopy(ICPES). The specimen of 15 titanium plates, 5 gold alloy plates, 5 silver-palladium alloy plates, 5 nickel-chromium alloy plates and 20 acrylic resin plates were fabricated, and also the specimen of 60 titanium plugs, 30 gold alloy plugs, 30 silver-palladium alloy plugs and 30 nickel-chromium alloy plugs were fabricated. The amount of metal elements released when titanium, gold alloy, silver-palladium alloy and nickel-chromium alloy immersed solely in the artificial saliva solution of 70ml, and the galvanic corrosion reaction occurred on the titanium in contact with gold alloy, silver-palladium alloy, and nickel-chromium alloy were observed during 21 weeks in the interval of each 7 week using immersion test, and then the amount of metal elements released in the artificial saliva solution was measured using ICPES. From the experiments, the following results were obtained : 1. In case of immersing titanium, gold alloy, silver-palladium alloy, and nickel-chromium alloy solely in the artificial saliva solution (Group 1, 2, 3, and 4), the total amount of metal elements released was that group 4 was greater about 2.3 times than group 3, and about 7.8 times than group 2. In case of group 1, the amount of titanium released was not found after 8 week(p<0.001) 2. In case of galvanic coupling of titanium in contact with gold alloy(Group 5, 6), the total amount of metal elements released of group 5 and 6 was less than that of group 7, 8, 9, and 10(p<0.05). 3. In case of galvanic coupling of titanium in contact with silver-palladium alloy(Group 7, 8), the total amount of metal elements released of group 7 was greater about twice than that of group 5, and that of group 8 was about 14 times than that of group 6(p<0.05). 4. In case of galvanic coupling of titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy(Group 9, 10), the total amount of metal elements released of group 9 and 10 was greater about 1.8∼3.2 times than that of group 7 and 8, and was greater about 4.3∼25 times than that of group 5,6(p<0.05). 5. In the effect of galvanic corrosion according to the difference of the area ratio of cathode and anode, the total amount of metal elements released was that group 5 was greater about 4 times than group 6, group 8 was greater about twice than group 7, and group 10 was greater about 1.5 times than group 9(p<0.05). 6. In the effect of galvanic corrosion according to the elasped time during 21 weeks in the interval of each 7 week, the amount of metal elements released was decreased markedly in case of galvanic coupling of the titanium in contact with gold alloy and silver-palladium alloy but the total amount of nickel and beryllium released was not decreased markedly in case of galvanic coupling of the titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy(p<0.05) In conclusion, not only in case of immersing nickel-chromium alloy solely in the artificial saliva solution(Group 4) but also in case of galvanic coupling of the titanium in contact with nickel-chromium alloy(Group 9, 10), the total amount of metal elements released of group 4, 9 and 10 was greater than that of group 5, 6, 7 and 8, and there was greater about 4.3∼25 times than that of group 5 and 6, and therefore, it was considered that the corrosion behavior of nickel-chromium alloy had more problem than that of gold alloy and silver-palladium and futher research is needed.

        To find the prevalence and related factors of low back pain experienced by some beauticians. a survey was made toward 252 beauticians in Kwangju City from March 1st to April 1st, 1998. The results were as follows; 1. The prevalence rate of low back pain among the respondents for the last week was 59.5%. 2. The aid group and staff group with low back Pain had significantly longer duration of work than those without low back pain. Managers who had bad posture with twisted or too much extended back showed a significantly higher prevalence of low back pain than those with good posture during work(P<05). 3. Aid group with low back pain showed significantly higher points at total stress score, depression score, general health score and vitality score than those without low back Pain. The staff group with low back pain showed significantly higher points for total stress score, sleep disorder and anxiety score, depression score, general well-being and vitality score than those without low back pain. Managers with low back Pain showed significantly higher points of stress at social performance and self confidence (P<05) than those without low back pain. The above results suggest that low back pain is related to different jobs and work environments for beauticians. So effective measures and further studies against risk factors must be made considering their jobs. To prevent or reduce low back pain, appropriate management of stress for beauticians is necessary.

      • 效率的인 在庫管理시스템에 관한 硏究 : JIT시스템을 중심으로

        In this study, so as to cope with various surroundings, for example, economic and technological environments, diversified tastes of consumers, etc., which are changing very rapidly, and to reinforce international competitiveness by reducing production cost and improving productivity through efficient inventory management, the authors have briefly examined traditional inventory management system and MRP system and have deeply investigated JIT system theoretically. It can be said that MRP system is derived from the theory that traditional inventory management, which do not consider changeable circumstances of today`s manufacturing, is inefficient. On the contrary, JIT system is a peculiar one which is properly established on Japanese industrial environment. MRP system and JIT system, which were devised to result in efficient industrial management by minimizing inventory material and improving productivity, are more or less similar in basic conception and production management. Considering management cycle, MRP system has advantages in planning and controlling, and JIT system has advantages in doing. So the disadvantages of MRP system in shop floor management can be lessened by utilizing JIT system, and those of JIT system can be reduced by utilizing the advantages of MRP system. JIT system, which improves quality and reduces wastes by diminishing the waste of materials, enhancing labor productivity, lessening safty stock, and bringing about rapid feedback on defective goods, is suitable for repetitive production. MRP system is suitable for nonrepetitive manufacturing, and JIT system, if joined to MRP system, can be applicable to semirepetitive production. In this thesis, the authors have examined inventory management system theoretically. In the future, through emperical investigation, efficient models of inventory management system, which are suitable for Korean industrial environment and production companies, should be invented.
