Performing Nation-ness in South Korea during the 2002 Korea-Japan World Cup
이현정,조영한 한국학중앙연구원 한국학중앙연구원 2009 Korea Journal Vol.49 No.3
The festive mass rally that took place in South Korea during the 2002 World Cup was more than a sporting event. As a way of understanding the national frenzy and people’s experiences during the World Cup, we interpret the mass festive rally as a form of social performance. In doing so, we portray this sporting event as a national stage, with Korean supporters as performers and the worldwide audience as spectators. This study uses the term “nation-ness” to encapsulate the idea of nation that links such disparate phenomena as nation, nationalism, and nationality. Through the examination of various performances within the rally, as well as of various reactions by the governmental, corporate, and public, it reveals that the spectacle contained three dimensions of performance: evolving processes, a betwixt-and-between, and everyday life. Attention to the performative aspects of the event contributes to illuminating this phenomenon as a set of evolving processes that are closely tied to contemporary South Korean society. Through analyzing South Koreans’ performance in the World Cup, we suggest that nation-ness was performed as cultural practices that were utilized for individual revelation, and as expressions of nationalism interwoven with globalism. Purpose: Pulmonary complications are the leading cause of death among patients with influenza A (H1N1) infection. Knowledge of factors associated with development of pneumonia among patients infected with influenza A (H1N1) is limited. We conducted a comparative analysis of clinical features and laboratory findings between patients with influenza A (H1N1) infection with and without infiltrations on chest radiography. Methods: Among adults patients with influenza A (H1N1)infection confirmed by real time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR), those who underwent blood tests and chest radiograph at the same time from August to December of 2009 were included in the study. A total of 141 confirmed adult patients with influenza A (H1N1) infection were finally included and were allocated to either the positive infiltration group or the negative infiltration group, as shown on chest radiography. Results: Regarding clinical features, significant differences in pulse rate, respiration rate, and presence of dyspnea were observed between patients with infiltrations on chest radiography and those without infiltrations on chest radiography. According to laboratory findings, differences in leukocytosis, as well as levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), alanine amino transferase (ALT), actate dehydrogenase (LDH), and C-reactive protein (CRP) were observed between the two groups. As a result of multivariable analysis, dyspnea and CRP were found to be significant independent factors in association with infiltrations on chest radiography. Best cut-off value of CRP was 2.53 mg/dL with a sensitivity of 78.6% and a specificity of 73.9% (AUC:0.830, p<0.001, 95% CI [0.726-0.935]). Conclusion: As confirmed by real time rRT-PCR, an independent association of dyspena and CRP > 2.53 mg/dL with infiltrations suggestive of pneumonia on chest radiography was observed in adult patients with influenza A (H1N1) infection.

Statement of problem: Second-generation indirect composite resins have been improved flexural strength, compressive strength, hydrolytic degradation resistance, wear resistance compared to first-generation indirect composite resins, but there are still some problems as hydrolysis and low wear resistance. Some manufacturers claim that wear resistance of their materials has been improved, but little independent study has been published on wear properties of these materials and the properties specified in the advertising materials are largely derived from in-house or contracted testing. Purpose: This study was to evaluate the wear of indirect composite resins (SR Adore, Sinfony, Tescera ATL) and gold alloy against the human enamel. Material and method: Extracted human incisors and premolars were sectioned to $2{\times}2{\times}2mm$ cube and embedded in the clear resin and formed conical shaped antagonist to fit the jig of pin-on-disk tribometer. Total 20 antagonists were stored in distilled water. Five disk samples, 24mm in diameter and 1.5mm thick, were made for each of three groups of indirect composite resins and gold alloy group, and polished to #2,000 SiC paper on auto-polishing machine. Disk specimens were tested for wear against enamel antagonists. Wear test were conducted in distilled water using a pin-on-disk tribometer under condition (sliding speed 200rpm contact load 24N, sliding distance 160m). The wear of the enamel was determined by weighing the enamel antagonist before and after test, and the weight was converted to volumes by average density. The wear tracks were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and surface profilometer to elucidate the wear mechanisms. Statistical analysis of the enamel wear volume, wear track depth and wear tract width of disk specimens were accomplished with one-way ANOVA and the means were compared for significant differences with Scheffe's test. Results: 1. The enamel wear was most in gold alloy, but there were no statistically significant differences among all the groups (P>.05). 2. In indirect composite resin groups, the group to make the most shallow depth of wear tract was Sinfony, followed by Tescera ATL, SR Adoro (P<.05). Gold alloy was shallower than Sinfony, but there was no statistically significant difference between Sinfony and gold alloy (P>.05). 3. The width of wear tract of SR Adore was larger than the other groups (P<.05), and there were no statistically significant differences among the other groups (P>.05). 4. SEM analysis revealed that Sinfony and gold alloy showed less wear scars after test, Tescera ATL showed more wear scars and SR Adore showed the most. Conclusion: Within the limits of this study, Sinfony and gold alloy showed the least wear rates and showed similar wear patterns.

This paper examines Korean journalist and scholar Ri Yŏng-hŭi’s writings on contemporary China in the 1960s and 1970s with a view to reconsider his dubious legacy as a progressive Korean writer writing about communist China. Ri’s positive description of the Cultural Revolution in the late 1960s and early 1970s was especially influential among college students and intellectuals in Korea. However, witnessing the social changes in China in the 1980s and then the collapse of the socialist world around 1990, Ri stopped writing about the Mao era. It is important to note the meaning of Ri’s retreat at this time because he never denied or withdrew any part of his earlier writings on China. At the core of Ri’s description of the Cultural Revolution lies the idea of “human revolution,” by which he means reforming people’s minds into awakened and selfless ones. In this understanding of the Cultural Revolution, values of awakening, which Ri learns from Lu Xun, and socialist collectivity coexist without conflict. In Ri’s view, even Lu Xun was a selfless mind standing with the people and recognizing ordinary people’s revolution. The reason why Ri suddenly ceased writing about the Mao era without clear explanation was probably that he could neither give up his views on the positive effects of the Cultural Revolution, nor account for its positive and negative effects at the same time. I suggest that this was where Ri was puzzled and was the point which later generation of Koreans studying or writing about Maoist China should go back to and contemplate on.
Korean editors’ and researchers’ experiences with preprints and attitudes towards preprint policies
이현정,허선 한국과학학술지편집인협의회 2021 Science Editing Vol.8 No.1
Purpose This study investigated editors’ and researcher’s experiences with preprints and their attitudes towards preprint policies in Korea. Methods From December 30, 2019 to January 10, 2020, a Google Forms survey was mailed to members of the Korean Council of Science Editors and the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies. The 16 survey items included two demographic items, six items on experience with preprints, five 5-point Likert-scale items on attitudes towards preprints, and three items on advantages and disadvantages. Results Out of 365 respondents, 56 had deposited their manuscripts on preprint servers, while 49 stated that they allowed preprints in their journals. More than half of the respondents expressed favorable attitudes towards prioritizing preprint deposition, promotion of open access, rapid feedback on preprints, earlier citations, and evidence of research work. Responders in engineering had more experience with the concept of preprints, and were more likely to have heard about preprint servers and preprint deposition by other researchers, than those in medicine. Half of the editors disagreed with the need for preprints, for reasons including a lack of scientific integrity, stealing ideas/scooping data, priority issues regarding research ideas, and copyright problems. Conclusion The above results showed that preprints are still not actively used in Korea. Although experiences with preprints were not widespread, more than half of the respondents showed favorable attitudes towards preprints. More of a consensus should emerge for preprint policies to be accepted by editors in Korea.

Objective: This study examined the characteristics of febrile young infants with a serious bacterial infection (SBI) who visited emergency centers in Korea and validated the Philadelphia criteria and modified Philadelphia criteria to predict the risk of SBI Methods: This was a retrospective study conducted on 450 infants aged 31 days to 56 days who visited three emergency centers with fever from September 2014 to August 2017. The characteristics of the SBI patients were analyzed, and the validation of the Philadelphia and modified Philadelphia criteria sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy were checked. Results: Of 450 patients, 165 patients (36.7%) had SBI, such as urinary tract infection (33.3%), bacteremia (4.0%), acute osteomyelitis (0.2%), and bacterial meningitis (BM) in two patients (0.4%). The most common pathogen of invasive bacterial infection was Escherichia coli. In the Philadelphia criteria, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy were 73.9%, 47.0%, 44.7%, 75.7%, and 56.9%, respectively. In the modified Philadelphia criteria that excluded lumbar puncture as a predictor, the sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy were 93.3%, 31.9%, 44.3%, 89.2%, and 54.4%, respectively. The most common failed low risk criteria was appearance (43.3%). Two patients with bacterial meningitis were excluded from low risk group by the modified Philadelphia criteria. Although one out of 2 patients met the failed low risk criteria due to their poor condition, this factor is not objective, so BM can be missed. Conclusion: Bacterial meningitis was too rare in this study. New criteria are needed to predict SBI. The Philadelphia and modified Philadelphia criteria were not useful for predicting SBI in this study. Other prediction models will be needed to predict SBI in the vaccination era.
