        Two Previously Unrecorded Fungal Species Isolated from Muui Island in Korea

        Fungi are cosmopolitan and they occupy diverse niches as consumers, producers, anddecomposers. They play critical roles in the environment by enabling nutrient cycling andgenerating a plethora of secondary metabolites. This study aimed to identify and characterizefungal strains isolated from diverse sources on Muui Island, Republic of Korea. In 2023, a totalof 86 fungal strains were collected and examined. Investigation of the morphological featuresand phylogenetic analyses of multiple barcode loci identified one putative novel species andtwo species previously unrecorded in the Republic of Korea: Colletotrichum sp., Colletotrichumguizhouense, and Fusarium brachygibbosum. This study provides a comprehensive descriptionof their molecular phylogenies and morphological characteristics. These findings will contributeto the existing knowledge about fungal species in the Republic of Korea and future researchon the fungal diversity on Muui Island.

        Identification and Characterization of Fungal Pathogens Associated with Boxwood Diseases in the Republic of Korea

        Boxwood is a representative ornamental shrub that is widely used in landscaping horticulture. After pruning, damaged leaves or stems of boxwoods are unavoidably vulnerable to infection by various plant pathogens. Several boxwood diseases caused by fungi, such as Volutella blight and Macrophoma leaf spot, have been reported worldwide including Republic of Korea. In this study, we isolated and identified fungal pathogens of boxwood diseases that occurred in Korea and characterized their morphological and taxonomic characteristics. Boxwood samples showing blight symptoms were collected in Seoul, Republic of Korea, and the putative fungal pathogens Pseudonectria buxi, P. foliicola, and Neofusicoccum buxi were successfully identified. Investigation of the morphological features of the field isolates, including mycelial growth and conidial morphology, and phylogenetic analysis of multiple DNA barcode loci revealed that there were some morphological and genetic variations among isolates, but all of the analyzed isolates were closely related to the corresponding reference strains. We also found that P. foliicola strains were more virulent than P. buxi, and the N. buxi strains isolated in this study were weak pathogens or saprophytes. The results of our study will contribute to the development of control strategies for boxwood diseases caused by fungi and accelerate research on the complex ecology of boxwood diseases.

        공립유치원 교사가 되기 위한 계속된 도전, 실패와 극복 이야기

        본 연구는 3년 이상의 수험생활을 경험하면서도 공립유치원 교사가 되기 위한 도전을 하고 있는 수험생들이 겪고 있는 여러 측면의 어려움을 살펴보고, 실패의 원인을 분석해보고자 하였다. 또한 어려움에 대한 극복 방안을 알아봄으로써 계속된 도전을 하고 있는 수험생들에게 도움과 시사점을 주고자 하였다. 연구참여자로는 3년 이상의 긴 시간동안 임용고시를 준비하면서 응시경험과 수험생활을 경험한 현직교사 혹은 예비교사(수험생) 10명을 선정하였다. 연구방법으로는 개별 심층면담, 전화면담 및 e-mail 서신, 연구자의 저널을 활용하였다. 연구결과, 장수생의 어려움으로는 심리적인 어려움, 경제적인 어려움, 인간관계에서 오는 어려움, 건강상의 문제에서 오는 어려움이 있었고, 실패의 원인으로는 당일의 컨디션, 목표의식 및 의욕의 저하, 비효율적인 학습방법이 있었다. 이러한 어려움을 극복하기 위해서는 불안을 최소화하고 긍정적인 인간관계 맺기, 지속적인 건강관리 하기, 목표의식 갖기, 학습태도 변화하기 등의 방안이 나타났다. This study aimed at finding out diverse difficulties and overcoming which kindergarten teacher had tried over third time for selecting examination have experienced, and researching for the reason of failure, giving them the help. The participants of this study are 10 persons who had tried over third time for selecting examination. Individual interviews were used as a research method. Interviewees experienced psychological, economic, social, and health-related difficulties. The reasons for failure are condition of exam-day, low of willingness, and ineffective learning method, The reasons for taking the exam are stability of teaching job, difficulties of recruiting, and high possibility of passing, and hope of success.

        Histomorphometric analysis of microcrack healing after the installation of mini-implants

        Purpose: The goal of this study was to investigate the histomorphometric characteristics of the healing process of microcracks in the cortical bone after the installation of mini-im¬plants (MIs). Methods: Self-drilling MIs were inserted into the tibial diaphysis of twelve adult male New Zealand rabbits. Four MIs per rabbit were placed randomly. The animals were divided into four groups according to the length of the healing period: group A was sacrificed immedi¬ately, group B was sacrificed after one week, group C was sacrificed after two weeks, and group D was sacrificed after four weeks. Cortical bone thickness was measured using mi¬cro-computed tomography, and histomorphometric analyses of the cumulative length of the microcracks (CLCr) and the total number of microcracks (NCr) were performed using hematoxylin and eosin staining. Results: The microcracks were radially and concentrically aligned in the peri-MI bone. The CLCr decreased significantly one week after the surgery, mainly due to healing of the con¬centrically aligned microcracks. The CLCr showed another significant decrease from two weeks after the surgery to four weeks after the surgery, mainly reflecting healing of the ra¬dially aligned microcracks. A statistically significant decrease in the NCr occurred as the microcracks healed from zero weeks to two weeks. However, no significant difference in the NCr was found between groups C and D. Conclusions: In order to improve the primary stability of MIs, delayed loading and a heal¬ing period of a certain length are recommended to ensure the optimal healing of micro¬cracks and bone remodeling.

        Protective Effects of Traditional Korean Medicine Preparations, Herbs, and Active Compounds on the Blood–brain Barrier in Ischemic Stroke Model

        Stroke is among the leading causes of death and long-term physical and cognitive disabilities worldwide, affecting an estimated 15 million people annually. The pathophysiological process of stroke is complicated by multiple and coordinated events. The breakdown of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) in people with stroke can significantly contribute to the development of ischemic brain injury. Therefore, BBB disruption is recognized as a hallmark of stroke; thus, it is important to develop novel therapeutic strategies that can protect against BBB dysfunction in ischemic stroke. Traditional medicines are composed of natural products, which represent a promising source of new ingredients for the development of conventional medicines. Indeed, several studies have shown the effectiveness of Korean medicine on stroke, highlighting the value of Korean medicinal treatment for ischemic stroke. This review summarizes the current information and underlying mechanisms regarding the ameliorating effects of the formula, decoction, herbs, and active components of traditional Korean medicine on cerebral ischemia-induced BBB disruption. These traditional medicines were shown to have protective effects on the BBB in many cellular and animal ischemia models of stroke, and experiments in various animal species, such as mice and rats. In addition, they showed brain-protective effects by protecting the BBB through the regulation of tight junction proteins and matrix metalloproteinase-9, reducing edema, neuroinflammation, and neuronal cell death. We hope that this review will help promote further investigation into the neuroprotective effects of traditional Korean medicines and stimulate the performance of clinical trials on Korean herbal medicine–derived drugs in patients with stroke.

      • High-throughput emissive glass microcomponents synthesis via contact flow lithography

        We report a high-throughput synthesis of emissive microcomponents with rare-earth-doped upconverting nanocrystals (UCNs) using a contact flow lithography. Upconverting nanocrystals were synthesized using hydrothermal reaction and used as anti-Stokes emitters that absorb near-infrared (NIR) light and emit in visible spectrum. We utilized contact flow lithography for massive production of nonspherical composite microcomponents. Emissive composite microcomponents with a variety of shapes was synthesized and corresponding glass microcomponents were obtained through polymer burn-off and sintering of the composites. The synthesized particles with UCNs are stable at high temperature and have great potential to use as anti-counterfeiting platform.

        신규 화장품용 천연유래 보존제의 물성 측정, 용액 거동 및 보존제 포함 화장품의 제형 안정성

        화장품 보존제는 화장품의 유효 사용 기간에 매우 중요한 성분으로, 최근에는 저독성 자연유래 화장품 보존제에 대한 관심이 급증하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존 다이올(diol) 계통 보존제를 대체할 수 있으며 천연유래 성분으로부터 얻어진 신규 보존제(laurimino bispropanediol, LB)의 기초적인 물성을 측정하고 신규 보존제를 포함한 수용액을 제조하여 용액 거동을 고찰하였다. 특히, 신규 보존제의 수용액에서의 micelle 형성 가능성을 pyrene 분자를 이용한 실험법으로 고찰하였다. 이를 통해 신규 보존제는 상대적으로 긴 소수성 탄화수소와 늘어난 하이드록실 그룹(hydroxyl group)으로 인해 micelle 형성이 가능함을 추론할 수 있었다. 보존제의 제형 속에서의 성능을 검증하기 위해 유화력 테스트를 수행하였으며, 유기용매와 유지 성분에 대해 유화력을 지님을 확인할 수 있었다. 추가로, 점도가 상대적으로 낮은 에센스 및 비교적 점도가 높은 로션 제형에 도입하였을 때 제형의 분산 안정성이 확보됨을 파악할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 향후 새로운 저독성 천연유래 화장품 보존제의 개발 및 사용에 중요한 정보를 제공할 것이다. Cosmetic preservatives are an important class of ingredients in terms of ensuring sustainable use and providing customer satisfaction. Recently, a great deal of interest has been drawn to the production and use of toxic-free, naturally derived preservatives. In this work, a new naturally derived preservative (laurimino bispropanediol, LB) was developed to replace the most widely used diol preservatives, such as 1,2-hexanediol or 1,2-octanediol. The basic properties of the obtained preservative were measured, and the solution behavior of the preservative in an aqueous medium was examined. The feasibility of micelle formation in the preservative solution was investigated using the fluorescence (FL) based pyrene method. Micelle formation was feasible owing to the relatively long hydrophobic chains and increased hydroxyl groups in the preservative molecules. The emulsification capability of the preservative was assessed using the Rosano and Kimura method, showing that the preservative possessed emulsifying capability in an organic solvent (benzene) and soy bean oil. In addition, the dispersion stability of cosmetic formulations, including the new LB preservatives such as essence and lotion, was demonstrated by comparing the light transmittance of the formulations. This article provides important information for future research regarding the synthesis and practical applications of new toxic-free naturally derived preservatives.
