Gomunron in later Joseon Era was a freshly added concept to the existing prose tradition. Instead of following the established writing tradition, experimenting new sort of writing was a quite rebellious and challenging act in the Middle Ages when the compulsion of ideology and censorship was prevailed. One of the strategies which could weaken the danger was to experiment a new kind of prose writing through the traditional prose style. To begin with, medieval prose view of the East can be arranged as follows: First, prose in the East was established and classified according to the effective value of the writings; second, prose functioned as a systematic device not individual literary act; third, among the prose styles, narrative was more appreciated and recognized as a proper form than argument; fourth, prose aimed at reality and excluded fictional elements. In this context, Bijiryu seems the most proper style, because of the following characteristics within the range of medieval eastern prose view. First, Jeongangryu and Bijiryu, which describes individual's biography, do not belong to literary creation but are a part of history. Second, Bijiryu has the most consistent and strictest structure among the prose genres. Bijiryu is practical prose and a part of history, and includes realistic content in the strict structure. Gomunron, a kind of Bijiryu, which tried a new pattern of prose writing, could have dualistic aspects; it was connected to the king Jeongjo's Munchebanjeong, which was conservative literary theory and the ruling ideology, and to relative and progressive one at the same time.
