Vol.36 No.1

Generally, trees lining the streets are the most easily accessible green areas in the city and constitute the smallest basic unit in the formation of the urban linear green axis. This study attempts to interpret issues related to city trees from a comprehensive and relational viewpoint. The site of this study is Central Park Street in front of Incheon Metropolitan City Hall. This street is representative of those in Incheon City. This study is an inter-relational interpretation of issues by measuring the vitality of these trees. The following are results of this study: First, the vitality of city trees is higher in those trees growing in natural ground than those growing in plant gratings. This observation can lead to budget savings and increased natural areas in the city. Also, if planter and multi-layering planting methods are introduced where damage to trees is predicted, variation to urban landscape can be achieved while linking to reinforced rearing foundation of street-side trees. Second, there is need for a holistic approach to caring for street-side trees regarding the damage caused by drastic pruning and strong street lights. The typical functions of these trees, like supplying freshness in summer, absorbing solar radiation, and controlling the urban micro-climate are closely related to the vitality of the trees. Accordingly, the function and ecology should be understood holistically, not separately. In this aspect, the functional and ecological use of the multi-layering planting method is effective in protecting pedestrians from vehicles as well. Third, the fallen leaves of monotonous rows of trees have different ecological and functional effects. Not only is the index of greenness in the urban setting increased, but there are also aesthetic and symbolic effects. Fourth, in spite of being the street along which Incheon Metropolitan City Hall, major administrative buildings and Central Park are located, this street does not have its own special identity to discriminate it from other streets. It fulfills only functional criteria based on uniformity. If there is no paradigm shift from today's street system based on vehicles, the role of landscape architecture will be very passive in regards to street-side trees, the minimum unit of urban green. Fifth, on this particular street, many trees were planted in December, which reflects a deficiency of short and long-term strategy, like a street-tree master plan. In this aspect, we still lack a mature culture concerning these trees as a basic unit in urban greenery. Furthermore, there needs to be cultural introspection concerning present administrative practices.

Vol.21 No.4

As this is a basic study for suggesting normalization and developmental direction of the biased recognition on street dance and for establishing a systematic theory, it aims to survey difference in recognition between street-dance majors and dance majors on street dance. For this, it surveyed concept recognition level, interest & experience appearance, and value recognition level on street dance targeting 171 street-dance majors and 163 dance majors, and examined major-based difference. The following conclusions were elicited. First, as a result of examining recognition level of terminology for examining the concept recognition level of street dance, the street-dance majors were indicated(p<.001) to have the lower concept recognition level than the dance majors. In case of dance majors, even the term recognition on the detailed genre in street dance was indicated(p<.001) to be lower than the street-dance majors. Second, as a result of examining recognition level on characters of street dance for examining the concept recognition level of street dance, both groups were indicated to be the highest in a case of recognizing that ‘it is dance art.’ However, the recognition level on characters of street dance was indicated(p<.001) to have difference by major. Third, as a result of examining the appearance of having experience on street dance, in case of dance majors, only 79 people(48.5) were indicated to have experience. The appearance of having experience on street dance by major was indicated(p<.001) to have difference by major. Fourth, as a result of examining the appearance of having an interest in street dance, the street-dance majors’ interest was indicated to be higher. An interest in street dance was indicated(p<.001) to have significant difference by major. Fifth, as a result of examining the value recognition on necessity of street-dance education in the dance education, both groups were indicated to recognize as saying of being necessary. However, the street-dance majors’ value recognition was indicated to be higher(p<.001). Sixthly, as a result of examining the individual value, artistic value, social value, and cultural value on street dance, both groups were indicated to have high value recognition level. However, the street-dance majors’ recognition was indicated(p<.001) to be higher than the dance majors’ recognition. Synthesizing the above conclusions, the major-based difference was shown in concept recognition, interest & experience, and value recognition level on street dance. Thus, to straighten an bad effect that street dance is delivered and transformed by wrong terminology, the education of theory is considered to likely need to be further reinforced in the actual condition for the current education of centering on practical skill. An effort for normalizing recognition of terminology on street dance was analyzed to be imminent through mass communication and relevant books.

Vol.15 No.1

(Background and Purpose) As economic standards improve, people also have a desire to engage in external activities in a more pleasant environment. So far, street-spaces have been designed for the smooth passage of cars, many of the street-spaces within the city are constructed as structure or function for 'car' rather than 'person'. With the recent spread of the concept of public design, We are trying to solve problems that have been planned for vehicle-centeredness in the past. However, most street improvement projects are focused on increasing quantity of facilities like benches, streetlights, and bollards. Reckless space creation and installation of facilities lacking integration, like layout, form, and linkage between facilities, are causing problems like mutual mismatch and overlapping installation. The purpose of this study is to suggest way to transform the current car-centered street-spaces into a people-centered street-space, thereby pedestrians can improve the function of street-spaces as living space where they can move more comfortably and safely and have rest and cultural life. (Method) First, examine the definition and general perception of the extent of street-spaces and redefine the street-spaces. Second, by investigating and analyzing the classification system, spatial structure and installation status of the type of street-spaces in Korea from functional aspect, It suggests the need to introduce integrated design concept as way to solve the problems of street-spaces in Korea due to plan of flat space and facilities. Third, explain the concept and scope of integrated design of street-spaces, and present design guideline, which is means of implementing integrated design, for street-spaces that is closest to people's everyday life. (Results) This study is to solve the functional problems in Korean street-spaces and to improve the functionalities so that street-spaces can perform their functions. It is suggested that this integrated design, which takes an integrated view of the relationship between spaces and users and facilities, should be introduced from the initial stage of street-spaces design. The street-spaces integration design can be an alternative to ensure comfortable walking width for pedestrians, prevent excessive overlapping of facilities, and improve the functionality of the street-spaces. (Conclusions) Most existing street-spaces cannot function as a transit space because even the minimum effective walking distance isn’t secured due to the facilities being constructed and installed recklessly. The street-spaces integration design is one of the effective ways to solve this problem. Integration design will have positive result to ensure pleasant walking and spatial environment on the user side and to create a harmonious street-spaces on the urban side. Also, in order for the integrated design to be stably established in Korea, continuous research is needed to prepare way to induce active participation not only in the public sector but also in the private sector.

      • Research into Causes and Prevention of Street Children in China

Vol.2007 No.-

There are street children all over the world, not only in developing countries but also in developed countries. According to 〈Street Children in Asia〉, there are about 25,000,000-30,000,000 street children in Asia, which is really a big problem. For China, there are about 150,000 street children. As is known to everyone, children are the future of a nation and a people, and what’s more, China is establishing a harmonious society nowadays, so it is considerably significant to resolve this problem well. Many a factor, say, the rupture of the families, improper ways of education and economic poverty and so on, have given rise to the phenomenon of street children. These street children run away from their guardians and keep wandering in the streets. They become the special social vulnerable group, for their basic rights like the living rights and developmental rights cannot be well protected. Street children can be easily physically-victimized and psychologically-victimized. This paper researches into the exhibition, characteristics and causes of street children, and proposes the prevention policies in the end.

Changes to shop configuration in streets and merchant"s awareness through the removal of enclosed arcades -A case study of 6 shopping streets in Osaka-

In Japan, many shopping streets have arcades installed and these streets have transformed into local communities and seen revitalization through festivals. However, as it has been more than 50 years since the arcades were installed, the facilities have experienced deterioration. A decline in retail shopping caused by changes in consumer behavior, aging of shops, and a lack of continuity have resulted in an increasing number of empty shops in many small shopping streets. In Korea, on the other hand, there have been studies of arcades in traditional markets in relation to facility modernization projects. However, there is no clear evidence that facility modernization projects lead to the revitalization of traditional markets. Hereafter, urban planning will focus on the attractiveness of spaces. "Small-scale shopping streets in Japan and traditional markets in Korea have the advantage of accessibility. In order to make use of this advantage and raise the attractiveness of the space, it is necessary to consider the management of arcades. A case study of Japanese shopping streets that have removed arcades will be informative for Korea. To understand the impact of arcade removal, we collected case studies of shopping streets in Osaka Prefecture and gathered information on six shopping streets that have removed arcade facilities. We then researched the changes in shop configurations and merchants’ awareness about the revitalization of the shopping street. Moreover, the decision-making process of arcade removal will also be considered. As a result of arcade removal, the number of shops began decreasing and the location’s function as a shopping street saw a decline. Shopping streets that continued to be revitalized saw busier shops and a rise in the number of restaurants. In the decision-making process, government subsidies were the most important factor affecting arcade removals, and holding a study group with a management consultant was effective in convincing merchants. Although the image of the shopping street has improved with the removal of the arcades, it has not benefited merchants’ awareness of the streets’ revitalization.

Vol.- No.72

The housing plans focused on large housing complex that have been popular in Korea regarded housing unit, housing, building arrangements, and planning of outdoor space as separate objects of planning, excluded existing housing and street system, and pursued only profits from development. As a result, urban structure broke down and street system was fragmented. This study started from the reflection on the existing housing planning that focused only on the planning logic of separate space and viewed it important to plan the outdoor space of housing that is in contact with the street in order to recover the collapsed urban structure and streets and to secure various urban landscapes. At a time when ways of small-scale renewal are expected to be promoted, street housing is thought to be worthy of attention in that it can be developed in various scales, and through various combination of form and plane, it can avoid uniformity of landscape and satisfy the needs for new urban housing types. Street housing maintains the existing streets so it is closely related to the living streets of the existing residents. Targeting 7 cases of overseas block-unit street multifamily housing, this study examined the ways of interpreting street space and the ways of responding to street space and outdoor space, and searched for planning elements that can be applied to domestic street housing. As for the direct response to streets, there were ground -floor and lower level planning, and as for street landscape response, there were reflective outdoor space of housing block and shared space planning. So this study examined the necessity of planning outdoor space that faces streets and the planning elements, and searches for ways for street housing, which are gaining attention as a realistic alternative for urban regeneration, to be onnected to the surrounding environment, secure totality of livingenvironment, and pursues ways to vitalize streets.

Vol.29 No.-

The technical dimension of ubiquitous streets has been often emphasized over its social aspect. This study aimed to examine how social interaction was formed and perceived in a ubiquitous street - a hybrid of ubiquitous technology with its technological root in organic interaction and a street with its function being as a place for social communication. Kangnam U-Street, created on the principle of "communicative interaction", was selected as a research site. With the uses of research method techniques including direct observation, questionnaire and interview, this study explored how media poles in Kangnam U-Street could mediate social interaction among its users. The results showed the followings. First, Kangnam U-Street users tended to use the media poles to capture the moment of companionship with friends, rather than to obtain the information the media poles provided. Second, the "photo mail" service of the media poles was a major element to promote the uses of media poles. The act of "photo-taking", however, was considered as an "individual activity", thus prohibiting Kangnam U-Steet users from interacting. Third, the result of regression analysis showed that the technological support for interactive content generation would work as a solution to the absence of social interaction in Kangnam U-street.
