Relationships between Smartphone Addiction and Smartphone Usage Types, Depression, ADHD, Stress, Interpersonal Problems, and Parenting Attitude with Middle School Students

Hong Youl Pyo,Yeom Yeon Ok,Lim Myung Ho 대한의학회 2021 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.36 No.19

Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between smartphone addiction of middle school students and smartphone usage types, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), stress, interpersonal problems, and parenting attitude. In particular, we wanted to find out how smartphone usage types predict smartphone addiction when controlling depression, ADHD, perceived stress, interpersonal problems, and parenting attitudes, which are the main predictors of existing smartphone addiction in this study. Methods: The subjects of this study included 487 local middle school students (253 girls and 234 boys). The measurement instruments used were the smartphone addiction scale, patient health questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Korean ADHD rating scales (K-ARS), perceived stress scale (PSS), Short form of the Korean-inventory of interpersonal problems circumplex scales (KIIP-SC), and the parenting attitude scale. We identified the relationships between the variables with correlation analysis and examined the predictors of smartphone addiction with hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Result: The factors that influence smartphone addiction were sex (β = 3.14, P < 0.01), stress (β = 2.99, P < 0.01), and interpersonal problems (β = 3.81, P < 0.001). In addition, when the confounding variables of smartphone addiction were controlled to examine the effects of smartphone usage types on smartphone addiction, social network service (SNS) (β = 2.66, P < 0.01) and music/videos (β = 2.73, P < 0.01) were found to significantly positively affect smartphone addiction, whereas study (β = −2.54, P < 0.05) had a significantly negatively effect. And these factors explained 29.5% of the variance in smartphone addiction. Conclusion: The order of the usage types with the highest influence on smartphone addiction was: enjoying music/videos, SNS, and study. This suggests that selective intervention depending on the main smartphone usage type can be effective.

Risk Factors for Smartphone Addiction in Korean Adolescents: Smartphone Use Patterns

Lee, Hyuk,Kim, Jun Won,Choi, Tae Young The Korean Academy of Medical Sciences 2017 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.32 No.10

With widespread use of the smartphone, clinical evidence for smartphone addiction remains unclear. Against this background, we analyzed the effect of smartphone use patterns on smartphone addiction in Korean adolescents. A total of 370 middle school students participated. The severity of smartphone addiction was measured through clinical interviews and the Korean Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale. As a result, 50 (13.5%) were in the smartphone addiction group and 320 (86.5%) were in the healthy group. To investigate the effect of smartphone use patterns on smartphone addiction, we performed self-report questionnaires that assessed the following items: smartphone functions mostly used, purpose of use, problematic use, and parental attitude regarding smartphone use. For smartphone functions mostly used, the addiction group showed significantly higher scores in “Online chat.” For the purpose of use, the addiction group showed significantly higher “habitual use,” “pleasure,” “communication,” “games,” “stress relief,” “ubiquitous trait,” and “not to be left out.” For problematic use, the addiction group showed significantly higher scores on “preoccupation,” “tolerance,” “lack of control,” “withdrawal,” “mood modification,” “conflict,” “lies,” “excessive use,” and “loss of interest.” For parental attitude regarding children's smartphone use, the addiction group showed significantly higher scores in “parental punishment.” Binary logistic regression analysis indicated that “female,” “use for learning,” “use for ubiquitous trait,” “preoccupation,” and “conflict” were significantly correlated with smartphone addiction. This study demonstrated that the risk factors for smartphone addiction were being female, preoccupation, conflict, and use for ubiquitous trait; the protective factor was use for learning. Future studies will be required to reveal the additional clinical evidence of the disease entity for smartphone addiction.

한국 청소년의 스마트 폰 중독과 우울, 사회 불안의 상관 관계

        이성철(Sung Chul Lee),최태영(Tae Young Choi),우정민(Jung Min Woo),김지현(Ji Hyun Kim),서민재(Min Jae Seo),곽상규(Sang Gyu Kwak),이종훈(Jong Hun Lee) 대한생물치료정신의학회 2014 생물치료정신의학 Vol.20 No.3

Objectives:Recently, adolescent use of smartphones has dramatically increased. Consequently, smartphone addiction has emerged as a serious social problem. Researches on internet and cellular phone addiction have reported correlation between such addictions and symptoms such as depression and social anxiety. However, there have only been limited studies on the relationship between smartphone use, depression and social anxiety. Methods:Subjects involved in this study are 57 high school students and 16 patients who are diagnosed with depressive disorder in a university hospital and are currently being treated on visitation basis. In order to measure smartphone addiction, this research used Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale(SAPS) developed by Korea National Information Society Agency in 2011. In order to measure depression and social anxiety, Beck Depression Inventory(BDI) and Fear of Negative Evaluation(KFNE) were used respectively. Results:The prevalence of smartphone addiction was 24.7%. The BDI and KFNE scores for the smartphone-addicted group were significantly higher than subjects who are not addicted to smartphone use. The percentage of women in the smartphone-addicted group was meaningfully higher than that in the non-addicted group. Although there was an overall meaningful correlation between smartphone addiction, BDI and KFNE, when considered in the context of gender, only females showed a meaningful correlation between smartphone addiction, BDI, and KFNE. Conclusion:Depression and social anxiety are meaningfully correlated to smartphone addiction. Women have shown a strong correlation between social anxiety and smartphone addiction. This may suggest that women tend to cope with their emotional problems caused by their interpersonal relationships through use of information technologies that enable them to access the virtual world. This research also shows that it may be beneficial to treat patients with both smartphone addiction and depression, social anxiety on an individualized basis.
