Natural Products from Single Plants as Sleep Aids: A Systematic Review

        김정윤,이수지,강일향,송유미,마지영,홍영선,박신원,문석인,김수정,정세미,김지은 한국식품영양과학회 2018 Journal of medicinal food Vol.21 No.5

Insufficient sleep, insomnia, and sleep-related problems are important health issues, as their overall prevalence accounts for about 30% of the general population. The aim of this study was to systematically review previous studies investigating the effects of orally administered single plant-derived extracts on sleep-related outcomes in humans. Data sources were PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library. The data search was conducted in two steps: step 1, names of plants which have been studied as sleep aids in humans were searched and retrieved; and step 2, each ingredient listed in step 1 was then added into the search term. Only original articles or reviews were applicable to the scope of this review. Studies on human subjects, with or without sleep-related disorders, were included. Sleep-related disorders refer to not only insomnia or sleep behavior disorders but also diseases with sleep-related symptoms. Studies were considered eligible for this review when the plant extracts were administered orally. Outcome measures relevant to sleep quality, duration, or other sleep-related problems were included. Twenty-one plants were listed in the first step of the search as potential candidates for natural sleep aids. Seventy-nine articles using these single plant-derived natural products were included in the final review. Although valerian was most frequently studied, conflicting results were reported, possibly due to the various outcome measures of each study. Other plants were not as rigorously tested in human studies. There was limited evidence with inconclusive results regarding the effects of single plant-derived natural products on sleep, warranting further studies.

Research on Product Service System(PSS) Business Model of the Intelligent Sleep Aid

        용가흥,이성필 한국기초조형학회 2021 기초조형학연구 Vol.22 No.5

According to a survey at Asan Medical Center in Seoul, the number of people with sleep disorders has increased significantly, and in particular, the rate of sleep disorders is increasing significantly among young office workers as they are at an important stage in the rapid development of their jobs and families. Long-term lifespan impairments will seriously affect people's daily activities and physical health. Therefore, it will be necessary to pay attention to sleep and study the problems of sleep and health. For this reason, the demand for various sleep aids and customized sleep contents is increasing, and the rapid development of smart products has become a new turning point in the design and improvement of sleep products. The purpose of this study is to develop a service model for a new sleep disorder product from the perspective of sustainable Product Service System(PSS). First, the interaction relationship between stakeholders was analyzed with specific research methods and progress. Ideas and keywords were derived through a free discussion method focusing on the topic of why there is a problem with sleep, and the advantages and disadvantages of customized sleep products were analyzed through investigation and analysis of existing sleep products. Second, the scenario for persona was specified through the analysis of the subjects, and a total of 30 problems and requirements among the keywords in 8 fields were identified through in-depth customer interviews and surveys. Third, an intelligent sleep aid product service system business model that organically combines and inducts complex insights using the KJ method, derives core values through user satisfaction surveys, and effectively improves sleep quality through multilateral collaboration and coexistence was proposed, but as the main content derived, seven issues were the main factors, including the sleep environment and the lack of intellectual knowledge on methods for good quality sleep. Finally, the contents and process of using smart sleep technology to solve seven problems were visualized.

Night shift preparation, performance, and perception: are there differences between emergency medicine nurses, residents, and faculty?

        John R. Richards,Taylor L. Stayton,Jason A. Wells,Aman K. Parikh,Erik G. Laurin 대한응급의학회 2018 Clinical and Experimental Emergency Medicine Vol.5 No.4

Objective Determine differences between faculty, residents, and nurses regarding night shift preparation, performance, recovery, and perception of emotional and physical health effects. Methods Survey study performed at an urban university medical center emergency department with an accredited residency program in emergency medicine. Results Forty-seven faculty, 37 residents, and 90 nurses completed the survey. There was no difference in use of physical sleep aids between groups, except nurses utilized blackout curtains more (69%) than residents (60%) and faculty (45%). Bedroom temperature preference was similar. The routine use of pharmacologic sleep aids differed: nurses and residents (both 38%) compared to faculty (13%). Residents routinely used melatonin more (79%) than did faculty (33%) and nurses (38%). Faculty preferred not to eat (45%), whereas residents (24%) preferred a full meal. The majority (>72%) in all groups drank coffee before their night shift and reported feeling tired despite their routine, with 4:00 a.m. as median nadir. Faculty reported a higher rate (41%) of falling asleep while driving compared to residents (14%) and nurses (32%), but the accident rate (3% to 6%) did not differ significantly. All had similar opinions regarding night shift-associated health effects. However, faculty reported lower level of satisfaction working night shifts, whereas nurses agreed less than the other groups regarding increased risk of drug and alcohol dependence. Conclusion Faculty, residents, and nurses shared many characteristics. Faculty tended to not use pharmacologic sleep aids, not eat before their shift, fall asleep at a higher rate while driving home, and enjoy night shift work less.

Vol.31 No.1

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the relationship among musculoskeletal problems, sleep problems, and self-rated mental health of home-care workers. Methods: Data were collected from 447 home-care workers spanning three occupation types: life supporters for the elderly, home-visit caregivers, and life supporters for the disabled. Musculoskeletal problems, sleep problems, and self-rated mental health were assessed using structured questionnaires. Factors affecting self-rated mental health were analyzed using multiple regression. SPSS was used to test the mediating effects of sleep problems on musculoskeletal problems and self-rated mental health. Results: Among the general characteristics, the variables that showed significant differences in musculoskeletal problems were monthly income level, caring-related career duration, weekly working hours, and occupation type; and the variable that showed significant differences in self-rated mental health was occupation type. Among the occupation types, supporters for the disabled had the most musculoskeletal problems and the lowest self-rated mental health. Musculoskeletal problems among home-care workers had a direct negative effect on self-rated mental health and indirect negative effects on sleep problems. Conclusion: Measures are needed to reduce the differences in working conditions and health status among the occupation types of home-care workers. Considering the relevance between the health issues of home-care workers, the development of a carefully designed health promotion strategy is required.

        조철현,이시욱,이영국,신홍관,황일선 연세대학교의과대학 2015 Yonsei medical journal Vol.56 No.3

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects and safety of a sleep aid for postoperative analgesia in patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. Materials and Methods: Seventy-eight patients were prospectively assigned to eitherthe zolpidem group (multimodal analgesia+zolpidem; 39 patients) or the controlgroup (multimodal analgesia; 39 patients). Self-rated pain levels were assessed twice a day using a visual analog scale (VAS). The need for additional rescue analgesic, duration of functional recovery, and adverse effects were assessed for the first 5 days after surgery. Results: The mean number of times that additional rescue analgesicwas required during 5 days after surgery was 2.1±2.0 in the zolpidem group and 3.3±2.8 in the control group, a significant difference. There were no significant differences between the two groups in mean VAS pain scores during the first 5 days after surgery, although the zolpidem group had lower VAS pain scores than the controlgroup. Additionally, there were no significant differences in duration of functionalrecovery and adverse effects between the two groups. Conclusion: The use of zolpidem for analgesia after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair provided a significant reduction in the need for rescue analgesic without increasing adverse effects. Nevertheless, mean VAS pain scores during the first 5 days after surgery did not differ between the zolpidem group and the control group.
