      • Electroreduction and Acid–Base Properties of Dipyrrolylquinoxalines

        <P>The electroreduction and acid–base properties of dipyrrolylquinoxalines of the form H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ, H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>), and H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB> were investigated in benzonitrile (PhCN) containing 0.1 M tetra-<I>n</I>-butylammonium perchlorate (TBAP). This study focuses on elucidating the complete electrochemistry, spectroelectrochemistry, and acid–base properties of H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB><I>n</I></SUB> (<I>n</I> = 0, 1, or 2) in PhCN before and after the addition of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), tetra-<I>n</I>-butylammonium hydroxide (TBAOH), tetra-<I>n</I>-butylammonium fluoride (TBAF), or tetra-<I>n</I>-butylammonium acetate (TBAOAc) to solution. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical data provide support for the formation of a monodeprotonated anion after disproportionation of a dipyrrolylquinoxaline radical anion produced initially. The generated monoanion is then further reduced in two reversible one-electron-transfer steps at more negative potentials in the case of H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>) and H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>. Electrochemically monitored titrations of H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB><I>n</I></SUB> with OH<SUP>–</SUP>, F<SUP>–</SUP>, or OAc<SUP>–</SUP> (in the form of TBA<SUP>+</SUP>X<SUP>–</SUP> salts) give rise to the same monodeprotonated H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB><I>n</I></SUB> produced during electroreduction in PhCN. This latter anion can then be reduced in two additional one-electron-transfer steps in the case of H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>) and H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>. Spectroscopically monitored titrations of H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB><I>n</I></SUB> with X<SUP>–</SUP> show a 1:2 stoichiometry and provide evidence for the production of both [H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB><I>n</I></SUB>]<SUP>−</SUP> and XHX<SUP>–</SUP>. The spectroscopically measured equilibrium constants range from log β<SUB>2</SUB> = 5.3 for the reaction of H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ with TBAOAc to log β<SUB>2</SUB> = 8.8 for the reaction of H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB> with TBAOH. These results are consistent with a combined deprotonation and anion binding process. Equilibrium constants for the addition of one H<SUP>+</SUP> to each quinoxaline nitrogen of H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ, H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>), and H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB> in PhCN containing 0.1 M TBAP were also determined via electrochemical and spectroscopic means; this gave rise to log β<SUB>2</SUB> values ranging from 0.7 to 4.6, depending upon the number of nitro substituents present on the H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ core. The redox behavior of the H<SUB>2</SUB>DPQ(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB><I>n</I></SUB> compounds of the present study were further analyzed through comparisons with simple quinoxalines that lack the two linked pyrrole groups, i.e., Q(NO<SUB>2</SUB>)<SUB><I>n</I></SUB> where <I>n</I> = 0, 1, or 2.         Morphological Variation of Cultivated and Weedy Types in Perilla Crop Collected from South Korea

        Background: Perilla (Perilla frutescens L.) has been widely cultivated and used for medicinal use, aromatic, functional food, and ornamental plant in South Korea. To understand the morphological variation in the cultivated and weedy types of Perilla (CWTP) collected from South Korea, 52 accessions collected from different areas were evlauated using one quantitative and 10 qualitative characteristics. Methods and Results: Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed using the NTSYS-pc V2.1 program to detect the differences among the accessions of the CWTP. Multivariate analysis was performed using Microsoft Excel Statistical Analysis System. The cultivated P. frutescens var. frutescens and two weedy types of Perilla crop were accurately distinguished based on he 11 morphological characteristics, paricularly seed related traits, used in the study. PCA results showed that, most morphological characteristics such as weight per 100 seeds (QN1), color of leaf adaxial side (QL1), color of leaf abaxial side (QL2), stem color (QL4), flower color (QL5), seed size (QL9), and seed hardness (QL10) provided a significant contribution in the positive or negative direction on the first axis. These characteristics are considered useful for distinguishing between accessions of the CWTP collected from South Korea. Conclusions: The accessions of weedy P. frutescens var. frutescens are located between the accessions of cultivated P. frutescens var. frutescens and the those of weedy P. frutescens var. crispa on the first axis. Although the cultivated and weedy types of P. frutescens var. frutescens and the two weedy types of P. frutescens var. frutescens and P. frutescens var. crispa cannot be completely distinguished, the results provide useful information for future studies on the identification and classification of CWTP germplasm accessions collected from different areas in South Korea

        《 역경 》 괘효사적 「 전시 (前詩) 」 현상 - 겸평 「 고가징인 (古歌徵引) 」 설 -

        본 논문은 ≪易經≫의 封爻辭에 존재하는 「前詩」 현상에 대해 논구 한 것이다. 易象과 詩象은 異質同構의 관계를 지니고 있으며 ≪易≫은 ≪詩≫와 통하고 ≪詩≫는 ≪易≫에 근접해 있으므로 ≪역경≫에는 시가성립의 주요 요소인 賦·比·興의 초보적인 형태를 갖추고 있는 괘효사들이 존재하고 있다. 그러나 기본적으로 ≪詩≫와 ≪易≫은 같을 수 없다. ≪易≫은 원전성립사적으로 巫術과 占筮와 관련된 문건이므로 審美를 특질로 하는 詩와는 다른 것이기 때문이다. 그러므로 비록 괘효사들이 賦·比·興의 「立象」방식을 취하고 있더라도 시가성립단계에 있어 초기적인 요소를 가지고 있는 「前詩」현상이라고 할 수 있을 뿐, 이를 완성도가 높은 시가라고는 할 수 없다. 이와 관련하여 괘효사들이 이미 존재하고 있는 古歌들을 인용하였다고 주장한 소위 「古歌徹引」說에 대해 연구방법과 결론이 모두 재검토가 필요함을 논증하였다.

        An efficient protocol for Agrobacterium-mediated transformation of the biofuel plant Jatropha curcas by optimizing kanamycin concentration and duration of delayed selection

        Jatropha curcas is considered a potential biodiesel feedstock crop. Currently, the value of J. curcas is limited because its seed yield is generally low. Transgenic modification is a promising approach to improve the seed yield of J. curcas. Although Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation of J. curcas has been pursued for several years, the transformation efficiency remains unsatisfying. Therefore, a highly efficient and simple Agrobacterium-mediated genetic transformation method for J. curcas should be developed. We examined and optimized several key factors that affect genetic transformation of J. curcas in this study. The results showed that the EHA105 strain was superior to the other three Agrobacterium tumefaciens strains for infecting J. curcas cotyledons, and the supplementation of 100 mM acetosyringone slightly increased the transient transformation frequency. Use of the appropriate inoculation method, optimal kanamycin concentration and appropriate duration of delayed selection also improved the efficiency of stable genetic transformation of J. curcas. The percentage of b-glucuronidase positive J. curcas shoots reached as high as 56.0 %, and 1.70 transformants per explant were obtained with this protocol. Furthermore, we optimized the root-inducing medium to achieve a rooting rate of 84.9 %. Stable integration of the T-DNA into the genomes of putative transgenic lines was confirmed by PCR and Southern blot analysis. Using this improved protocol, a large number of transgenic J. curcas plantlets can be routinely obtained within approximately 4 months. The detailed information provided here for each step of J. curcas transformation should enable successful implementation of this transgenic technology in other laboratories.

        Deformation Response Induced by Surcharge Loading above Shallow Shield Tunnels in Soft Soil

        In the case of sudden surcharge loading, shallow shield tunnels in areas with soft soil experience substantial deformation responses. It is very important to understand the different loading modes and control measures above the shallow shield tunnels in soft soil for improving the safety of tunnel structure and reducing the influence of deformation. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model of shallow shield tunnels in soft soil is established with FLAC3D. Ground and tunnel deformations are analyzed under different loading modes, and the effects of different deformation control measures are also studied. The numerical simulations in this paper show that the surface and tunnel deformation responses vary when induced by different loading modes above shallow shield tunnels in soft soil. After surface hardening with a 20-cm-thick layer of C20 concrete, the surface settlement is effectively controlled, and the uneven longitudinal settlement of the tunnel vault is improved. However, controlling the height of the surcharge is the most direct deformation control method. When the height of the surcharge is reduced from 6 m to 4 m and 2 m, the maximum ground settlement is reduced by 37.8% and 69.4%, respectively, and the maximum longitudinal settlement of the tunnel vault is reduced by 35.3% and 65.2%, respectively. During the operation of shallow shield tunnel in soft soil area, sudden surcharge loading should not be allowed. In the inevitable case, the surcharge loading on one side of the tunnel should be prevented and the surcharge loading height should be strictly limited.

        Port-Site Metastasis of Uterine Carcinosarcoma after Laparoscopy

        We report a case of port-site metastasis after laparoscopic surgery for early stage uterine carcinosarcoma (UCS) and review the related literature. A 53-year-old woman with suspected uterine malignance underwent a total laparoscopic hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, infra-colic omentectomy, and pelvic lymphadenectomy resulting pathologically in a stage IA UCS. Twelve months later she developed a palpable abdominal-wall mass at the trocar site without other synchronous metastases. A mass resection was performed and it was pathologically diagnosed with port-site metastasis of UCS. When performing surgery for UCS, specimens should be carefully removed in case small pieces of the occult disseminated metastatic tissues are trapped between the outer surface of the trocar sleeve and the abdominal wall incisional canal. Despite the low incidence, a laparotomy might be considered rather than laparoscopy to prevent port-site metastasis and more gynecological oncology clinical practices might be relevant to the management of port-site metastasis.
