Spinal Angiolipomas : Clinical Characteristics, Surgical Strategies and Prognosis

        Xiaolei Zhang,Sheng Dong,Guoqin Wang,Huifang Zhang,James Jin Wang,Guihuai Wang 대한신경외과학회 2022 Journal of Korean neurosurgical society Vol.65 No.1

Objective : Angiolipomas are usually found in the subcutaneous tissue of the trunk and limbs. Spinal angiolipomas (SALs) are uncommon and have rarely been reported. We report a series of nine SALs patients who received surgical treatment in our department. To summarize the clinical characteristics of SALs, propose our surgical strategies, and evaluate the effects of the operation. Methods : This was a retrospective review of nine SALs patients who received surgical treatment from August 2015 to March 2020. Total or subtotal resection was determined by the axial localization (dorsal or ventral) and the extent of intervertebral foramen involvement. The outcomes were assessed based on the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association (mJOA) scoring system utilized before surgery and at various follow-up points. Results : Among the nine patients, the mean mJOA score before surgery was 6.6±2.3, compared with 10.1±1.1 at the last follow-up time point (33.4±11.8 months). All patients achieved good outcomes, even in cases of subtotal resection. Conclusion : Early surgical resection of SALs is recommended, and the specific procedures should be determined by the axial localization (dorsal or ventral) and the extent of intervertebral foramen involvement. Most of the patients had a good prognosis, even in cases of subtotal resection.

Improving Marine Policy through Use of Visualization Tools in a Policy Simulation Lab

        James Opaluch,Thomas Grigalunas,Meifeng Luo,Huiting Zhang,권석재,정봉민,장영태 한국학술연구원 2002 Korea Observer Vol.33 No.2

Technical studies can shed light on many complex marinepolicy issues. However, conveying this information in easilyunderstandable ways to decision makers and other stakeholders isoften a difficult task. This paper will present initial draft results of ongoing work to develop new tools to help interested parties bettervisualize the consequences of policy actions and to integrate thetools into larger project analyses. The project uses the new stateof-the-art Policy Simulation Laboratory (SimLab) at the Univeristyof Rhode Island to communicate the consequences ofchange in the community. The SimLab is a group of networkedrooms and computer systems that utilize technology-based tools, like Geographic Information Systems (GIS), digital imagery andvirtual reality software, to help communities better visualize theconsequences of development (See http://www.uri.edu/cels/enre/Preview/SimLab/). For example, modeling tools can be used toforecast future development in a town, and GIS maps can be createdto show likely spatial distribution of future developments. Byclicking on specific areas of development on the maps, virtualreality tools allow interactive virtual drive-throughs or fly-bys ofdevelopments, complete with visuals and sound. Computer systemscan be used for forecast how different policy scenarios canbe used to attempt to manage the future of the community. In this paper we report on our initial progress toward thecreation and use of visualization tools, within the context of twolarger applications in coastal regions. The first application is partof a larger project to determine social, ecological and economicimpacts of alternative development scenarios in South County,Rhode Island. We intend to use virtual reality tools to help interestedparties better visualize the aesthetic consequences of newdevelopments. The second application is part of a larger ongoinganalysis to assess potential demand and community impacts of aproposed container port in Quonset Point, Rhode Island. We presentinitial drafts of technology-based tools to present visual andauditory impacts of a new port. Ongoing work will extend applicationsto coastal issues in Korea.

      • A naphthoimidazolium-cholesterol derivative as a ratiometric fluorescence based chemosensor for the chiral recognition of carboxylates

        Zhang, Xin,Ko, Gyeongju,Joung, Joonyoung F.,Li, Meng,Jeong, Yerin,Swamy, K. M. K.,Lee, Dayoung,Liu, Yifan,Lee, Songyi,Park, Sungnam,James, Tony D.,Yoon, Juyoung The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Chemical communications Vol.54 No.94

<P>Fluorescent chemosensors for sensing chiral molecules have been actively studied in recent years. In the current study, we report a naphthoimidazolium-cholesterol derivative (NI-chol 1) as a fluorescence based chemosensor for chiral recognition, in which the naphthoimidazolium serves not only as a fluorophore but also as a recognition moiety for anions <I>via</I> imidazolium (C-H)+-anion binding and the cholesterol unit acts as a chiral barrier. In particular, NI-chol 1 displayed unique and distinct ratiometric changes with Boc-d-Phe, on the other hand, Boc-l-Phe induced a negligible change. Furthermore, a distinct downfield shift (from 9.64 ppm to 9.96 ppm) of the imidazolium C-H peak was observed for Boc-d-Phe (5 eq.) with severe broadening, which indicates strong ionic hydrogen bonding between the C-H proton and the carboxylate.</P>

Equol Decreases Hot Flashes in Postmenopausal Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Clinical Trials

        James W. Daily,고병섭,육지나,Meiling Liu,Weijun Zhang,박선민 한국식품영양과학회 2019 Journal of medicinal food Vol.22 No.2

Soy isoflavones may benefit some, but not all, menopausal women, and the ability of the women to produce equol may be the major determinant of effectiveness. We assessed the efficacy of soy isoflavones and equol for alleviating menopausal symptoms, especially vasomotor symptoms, in postmenopausal women who were equol producers and nonproducers by using systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials (RCTs). We searched 12 English, Korean, and Chinese language scientific and medical databases. We selected all available RCTs that assessed the effect of equol, either equol itself or soy isoflavone in equol producers, on menopausal symptoms in peri- or postmenopausal women. The primary outcome was the effect on hot flashes. The severity of hot flashes was determined by the scores, and sensitivity and risk of bias analyses were conducted. Other outcomes of the review, but not meta-analysis, included depression and adverse events. Six studies (779 total subjects) met all criteria for the systematic review, 5 of those could be included in the meta-analysis (728 total subjects). Two studies included in the meta-analysis reported no statistically significant benefits of equol; the other three did report significant benefits of equol. Meta-analysis revealed a significant benefit of equol for lowering hot flash scores and revealed a generally low risk of bias. In conclusion, this study found that supplementing equol to equol nonproducers significantly lowered the incidence and/or severity of hot flashes in menopausal women.

      • Measurement of Lateral and Interfacial Thermal Conductivity of Single- and Bilayer MoS2 and MoSe2 Using Refined Optothermal Raman Technique

        Zhang, Xian,Sun, Dezheng,Li, Yilei,Lee, Gwan-Hyoung,Cui, Xu,Chenet, Daniel,You, Yumeng,Heinz, Tony F.,Hone, James C. American Chemical Society 2015 ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES Vol.7 No.46

<P>Atomically thin materials such as graphene and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have attracted extensive interest in recent years, motivating investigation into multiple properties. In this work, we demonstrate a refined version of the optothermal Raman technique1,2 to measure the thermal transport properties of two TMDC materials, MoS2 and MoSe2, in single-layer (1L) and bilayer (2L) forms. This new version incorporates two crucial improvements over previous implementations. First, we utilize more direct measurements of the optical absorption of the suspended samples under study and find values ∼40% lower than previously assumed. Second, by comparing the response of fully supported and suspended samples using different laser spot sizes, we are able to independently measure the interfacial thermal conductance to the substrate and the lateral thermal conductivity of the supported and suspended materials. The approach is validated by examining the response of a suspended film illuminated in different radial positions. For 1L MoS2 and MoSe2, the room-temperature thermal conductivities are 84 ± 17 and 59 ± 18 W/(m·K), respectively. For 2L MoS2 and MoSe2, we obtain values of 77 ± 25 W and 42 ± 13 W/(m·K). Crucially, the interfacial thermal conductance is found to be of order 0.1–1 MW/m2 K, substantially smaller than previously assumed, a finding that has important implications for design and modeling of electronic devices.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2015/aamick.2015.7.issue-46/acsami.5b08580/production/images/medium/am-2015-085805_0004.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/am5b08580'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

      • Genome Wide Proteomics of ERBB2 and EGFR and Other Oncogenic Pathways in Inflammatory Breast Cancer

        Zhang, Emma Yue,Cristofanilli, Massimo,Robertson, Fredika,Reuben, James M.,Mu, Zhaomei,Beavis, Ronald C.,Im, Hogune,Snyder, Michael,Hofree, Matan,Ideker, Trey,Omenn, Gilbert S.,Fanayan, Susan,Jeong, S American Chemical Society 2013 Journal of proteome research Vol.12 No.6

<P>In this study we selected three breast cancer cell lines (SKBR3, SUM149 and SUM190) with different oncogene expression levels involved in ERBB2 and EGFR signaling pathways as a model system for the evaluation of selective integration of subsets of transcriptomic and proteomic data. We assessed the oncogene status with reads per kilobase per million mapped reads (RPKM) values for ERBB2 (14.4, 400, and 300 for SUM149, SUM190, and SKBR3, respectively) and for EGFR (60.1, not detected, and 1.4 for the same 3 cell lines). We then used RNA-Seq data to identify those oncogenes with significant transcript levels in these cell lines (total 31) and interrogated the corresponding proteomics data sets for proteins with significant interaction values with these oncogenes. The number of observed interactors for each oncogene showed a significant range, e.g., 4.2% (JAK1) to 27.3% (MYC). The percentage is measured as a fraction of the total protein interactions in a given data set vs total interactors for that oncogene in STRING (Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins, version 9.0) and I2D (Interologous Interaction Database, version 1.95). This approach allowed us to focus on 4 main oncogenes, ERBB2, EGFR, MYC, and GRB2, for pathway analysis. We used bioinformatics sites GeneGo, PathwayCommons and NCI receptor signaling networks to identify pathways that contained the four main oncogenes and had good coverage in the transcriptomic and proteomic data sets as well as a significant number of oncogene interactors. The four pathways identified were ERBB signaling, EGFR1 signaling, integrin outside-in signaling, and validated targets of C-MYC transcriptional activation. The greater dynamic range of the RNA-Seq values allowed the use of transcript ratios to correlate observed protein values with the relative levels of the ERBB2 and EGFR transcripts in each of the four pathways. This provided us with potential proteomic signatures for the SUM149 and 190 cell lines, growth factor receptor-bound protein 7 (GRB7), Crk-like protein (CRKL) and Catenin delta-1 (CTNND1) for ERBB signaling; caveolin 1 (CAV1), plectin (PLEC) for EGFR signaling; filamin A (FLNA) and actinin alpha1 (ACTN1) (associated with high levels of EGFR transcript) for integrin signalings; branched chain amino-acid transaminase 1 (BCAT1), carbamoyl-phosphate synthetase (CAD), nucleolin (NCL) (high levels of EGFR transcript); transferrin receptor (TFRC), metadherin (MTDH) (high levels of ERBB2 transcript) for MYC signaling; S100-A2 protein (S100A2), caveolin 1 (CAV1), Serpin B5 (SERPINB5), stratifin (SFN), PYD and CARD domain containing (PYCARD), and EPH receptor A2 (EPHA2) for PI3K signaling, p53 subpathway. Future studies of inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), from which the cell lines were derived, will be used to explore the significance of these observations.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jprobs/2013/jprobs.2013.12.issue-6/pr4001527/production/images/medium/pr-2013-001527_0010.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/pr4001527'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

      • Enhancing Diabetes Prediction Using Advanced Machine Learning Techniques

        James Muljana,Xianbin Hong,Jie Zhang,Yuxuan Zhao,Yuechun Wang,Vijayakumar Nanjappan,Kalok Man 한국디지털콘텐츠학회 2023 The Journal of Contents Computing Vol.5 No.2

Diabetes has been an issue over the past few decades, where it keeps on having an upward trend throughout each year. One of the biggest contributing factor is caused by the possibility that people can remain undiagnosed during their early stages of diabetes. Therefore, this research is done to help develop a machine learning good enough to diagnose early-stage diabetes. The development of this machine learning will use the Pima Indian Diabetes Dataset, since another dataset is unable to be obtained. The methods to achieve a great model for identifying diabetes will be divided to 5 parts which are data preparation, exploratory data analysis, feature engineering, build the model, and evaluate it. There are various kinds of techniques on finishing each steps mentioned that are tried, however only some techniques support the model well.
