<P>Oxidative stress has been implicated in a number of neurological disorders, including cerebral ischemia and neuro-degenerative diseases. Comprehensive proteomic studies were carried out using an immortalized mouse hippocampal cell line, HT22, exhibiting oxidative stress-mediated cell death upon glutamate treatment. Two-dimensional fluorescence difference gel electrophoresis (2D DIGE) of subcellular organelle fractions revealed that significant numbers of proteins showed quantitative changes during HT22 cell death, among which a total of 51 proteins were identified by mass spectrometry. The identified proteins indicate that HT22 cell death occurs through perturbations in mitochondrial function, changes in translational elongation machinery, and translocation of proteins across subcellular organelles. This list of proteins may shed light on oxidative stress-mediated neuronal cell death.</P>

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been suggested to be a key mediator in the development of atopy and T<SUB>H</SUB>2 inflammation.</P><P><B>Objective</B></P><P>We sought to evaluate the effects of variations in the gene coding VEGF receptor (VEGFR) 2 on intermediate phenotypes of asthma in the Korean population.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>A cohort of 2055 children and adolescents responded to a questionnaire concerning asthma symptoms and risk factors and underwent methacholine bronchial challenge and skin tests. The <I>VEGFR2</I> gene, including the promoter area, was sequenced on 24 healthy subjects to discover informative single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs; minor allele frequency >2%). After haplotype reconstruction, 4 tagging SNPs (IVS6+54A>G, +889G>A, +1416T>A, and IVS25-92G>A) were scored. These SNPs were also scored in 480 adult asthmatic patients to verify the above genetic association study.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The prevalence of atopy was associated with a single SNP (+889G>A) of VEGFR2 with borderline significance (<I>P</I> = .048; relative risk, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.00-1.28). However, haplotype analysis showed that the atopy prevalence was strongly associated with a haplotype (AGAG) of VEGFR2 (<I>P</I> = .002; relative risk, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.09-1.42). As for airway hyperresponsiveness, neither individual SNPs nor haplotypes were found to be associated. Interestingly, the significant association was also found between atopy and the AGAG haplotype among adult asthmatic patients (<I>P</I> = .008; odds ratio, 1.66; 95% CI, 1.14-2.44).</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>The present study demonstrated that genetic variations of VEGFR2 are significantly associated with atopy in the Korean population.</P>
miR-431 promotes differentiation and regeneration of old skeletal muscle by targeting <i>Smad4</i>

<P>Lee et al. show that elevating miR-431 improved the myogenic capacity of old myoblasts, while inhibiting endogenous miR-431 lowered myogenesis. In an in vivo model of muscle regeneration following cardiotoxin injury, ectopic miR-431 injection greatly improved muscle regeneration and reduced SMAD4 levels.</P><P>The myogenic capacity of myoblasts decreases in skeletal muscle with age. In addition to environmental factors, intrinsic factors are important for maintaining the regenerative potential of muscle progenitor cells, but their identities are largely unknown. Here, comparative analysis of microRNA (miRNA) expression profiles in young and old myoblasts uncovered miR-431 as a novel miRNA showing markedly reduced abundance in aged myoblasts. Importantly, elevating miR-431 improved the myogenic capacity of old myoblasts, while inhibiting endogenous miR-431 lowered myogenesis. Bioinformatic and biochemical analyses revealed that miR-431 directly interacted with the 3′ untranslated region (UTR) of <I>Smad4</I> mRNA, which encodes one of the downstream effectors of TGF-β signaling. In keeping with the low levels of miR-431 in old myoblasts, SMAD4 levels increased in this myoblast population. Interestingly, in an in vivo model of muscle regeneration following cardiotoxin injury, ectopic miR-431 injection greatly improved muscle regeneration and reduced SMAD4 levels. Consistent with the finding that the mouse miR-431 seed sequence in the <I>Smad4</I> 3′ UTR is conserved in the human <I>SMAD4</I> 3′ UTR, inhibition of miR-431 also repressed the myogenic capacity of human skeletal myoblasts. Taken together, our results suggest that the age-associated miR-431 plays a key role in maintaining the myogenic ability of skeletal muscle with age.</P>
Metronidazole Induced Encephalopathy in a Patient with Brain Abscess

Metronidazole is commonly used for brain abscess but is not well known for its neurotoxic complications. Metronidazole-induced encephalopathy (MIEP) is toxic encephalopathy associated with the use of metronidazole. We experienced a case of brain abscess which developed reversible severe MIEP during treatment period. Although MIEP occurs in typical locations, it is not easy to differentiate from other conditions such as cerebral infarction, demyelinating diseases and metabolic diseases. Neurosurgeons should be aware that severe MIEP can occur during the use of metronidazole though it is not common.
Investigation of viewing zone parameters for full color transmission type holographic screens

Viewing zone shape and size perform a key role in creating viewing comfort for the viewer. The horizontal and vertical sizes of viewing zones, formed by a full color transmission type holographic screen with a stereoscopic image projection are investigated. The screens have been recorded as holograms of a narrow stripe shaped object with different width; to extend the vertical size of the viewing zone the holograms were exposed two times with the hologram shifting between exposures. The viewing zone parameters were measured as a function of the stripe width of the object and of the exit pupil size of projection optics for several holographic screens having the size of the 30 $\times$ 40 $\textrm{cm}^2$.
