Pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis is an uncommon diffuse cystic lung disease in adults. In rare cases, it can involve extrapulmonary organs and lead to endocrine abnormalities such as central diabetes insipidus. A 42-year-old man presented with polyphagia and polydipsia, as well as a dry cough and dyspnea on exertion. Magnetic resonance imaging of the hypothalamic-pituitary system failed to show the posterior pituitary, which is a typical finding in patients with central diabetes insipidus. This condition was confirmed by a water deprivation test, and the patient was also found to have type 2 diabetes mellitus. Computed tomographic scanning of the lungs revealed multiple, irregularly shaped cystic lesions and small nodules bilaterally, with sparing of the costophrenic angles. Lung biopsy through video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery revealed pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis. On a follow-up visit, only 1 year after the patient had quit smoking, clinical and radiological improvement was significant. Here, we report an uncommon case of pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis that simultaneously presented with diabetes insipidus and diabetes mellitus.

Mitomycin C가 白鼠의 纖維母細胞에 미치는 細胞毒性에 關한 硏究

Present study was carried out to investigate the cytotoxicity of mitomycin C in cultured rat fibroblasts. The colorimetric assays of neutral red(NR) and tetrazolium MTT and also the measurement of the rate of DNA synthesis and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) analysis were performed in cells cultured in the media containing various concentrations of mitomycin C. The results are as follows ; 1. The uptake ability of NR was decreased dose-dependently and NR_90 and NR_50 values of mitomycin C were 0.5 μg/㎖ and 2.3 μg/㎖ respectively. 2. Mitomycin C induced the dose-dependent decrease of the activity of mitochondrial succinic dehydrogenase and MTT_90, and MTT_50 values were 0.7 μg/㎖ and 3.4 μg/㎖, respectively. 3. Mitomycin C inhibited DNA synthesis dose-dependently and the rates of DNA synthesis at concentrations of mitomycin C, 0.5 μg/㎖ (NR_90) and 10^-3μg/㎖ were 2 % and 50 % of the control. 4. Frequency of sister chromatid exchange increased dose-dependently. From above results, it suggests that mitomycin C induced the DNA damage at below concentrations which dose not cause cytotoxicity as determined by NR and MTT assays.
Denitration Effect by Non-thermal Plasma

The surface discharge induced plasma chemical process(SPCP) was applied to decompose nitric oxide(NO). The operating condition was optimized in order to maximize the NO decomposition efficiency. The highest NO decomposition efficiency obtained was 94.3% at the power consumption of 19.8 W for the frequency of 10 kHz. NO decomposition efficiency increased with increasing residence time or with decreasing initial concentration of NO. As the thickness and melting point of the electrode increased, the NO decomposition efficiency was improved. It was also found that CH4 was an effective additive in this experiment.

Several flavonoid dimers were isolated and elucidated from the bark of Korean pine tree (Pinus densiflora). One of them was postulated to be a compound, epicatechin (4→7) 5,8,3`,4`-tetrahydroxy-(2R,3R)-flavan-3-ol, whose structural determination was carried out by diverse NMR techniques.

Background: Acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) are important causes of hospital admission and mortality. We investigated the clinical features of hospitalized patients with severe AECOPD and evaluated prognostic factors associated the readmission or mortality due to re-exacerbation of COPD within 6 months. Methods: The prospective study was enrolled 314 patients who hospitalized with severe AECOPD. And we collected demographic, clinical and laboratory findings at admission. Lung function was evaluated using the COPD assessment test (CAT) questionnaire, the modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale, and spirometry in the stable state. Results: The mean age was 72.2 ± 9.4 years (76.4% of male), and the rate of readmission within 6 months was 45.2% and mortality rate was 16.6%. When multivariate analysis was performed by using the significant variables, age (P < 0.001), CAT score (P < 0.001), old pulmonary tuberculosis (P = 0.003), initial PaO2 (P = 0.026), hemoglobin (P = 0.009), albumin (P = 0.005) and CRP at discharge (P < 0.001) were significantly associated with mortality. And also CAT score (P < 0.001), diabetes mellitus (P = 0.030) and CRP at discharge (P = 0.004) were significantly associated with readmission. In receiver operating characteristic curves, CRP at discharge than CAT score showed a good accuracy to predict the mortality. But CAT score showed good accuracy to predict readmission due to severe AECOPD. Conclusions: CRP at discharge as well as CAT score was significantly associated with both mortality and readmission due to AECOPD.
Two-Dimensional Arrays of Gold Nanoparticles for Plasmonic Nanosensor

Two dimensional (2D) arrays of noble metal nanoparticles are widely used in the sensing of nanoscale biological and chemical events. Research in this area has sparked considerable interest in many fields owing to the novel optical properties, e.g., the localized surface plasmon resonance, of these metallic nanoarrays. In this paper, we report successes in fabricating 2D arrays of gold nano-islands using nanosphere lithography. The reproducibility and the effectiveness of the nano-patterning method are tested by means of spin coating and capillary force deposition. We found that the capillary force deposition method was more effective for nanospheres with diameters greater than 600 nm, whereas the spin coating method works better for nanospheres with diameters less than 600 nm. The optimal deposition parameters for both methods were reported, showing about 80% reproducibility. In addition, we characterize gold nano-island arrays both geometrically with AFM as well as optically with UV-VIS spectrometry. The AFM images revealed that the obtained nano-arrays formed a hexagonal pattern of truncated tetrahedron nano-islands. The experimental and theoretical values of the geometric parameters were compared. The 2D gold nano-arrays showed strong LSPR in the absorption spectra. As the nano-islands increased in size, the LSPR absorption bands became red-shifted. Linear dependence of the plasmon absorption maximum on the size of the gold nano-islands was identified through the increment in the plasmon absorption maximum rate for a one nanometer increase in the characteristic length of the nano-islands. We found that the 2D gold nano-arrays showed nearly seven-fold higher sensitivity of the absorption spectrum to the size of the nano-islands as compared to colloidal gold nano-particles.
