<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, we investigated the high-temperature oxidation behavior of Mo-Si-B alloys with different volume fractions or sizes of intermetallic compound phases. Mo-Si-B alloys with uniformly dispersed intermetallic compound phases (Mo<SUB>5</SUB>SIB<SUB>2</SUB> and Mo<SUB>3</SUB>Si) in Mo solid solution matrix phase were fabricated using a novel powder metallurgical route, as introduced in our previous study. An isothermal oxidation test was conducted at 1300 °C for up to 10 h. The high-temperature oxidation resistance of Mo-Si-B alloys improved by increasing the volume fraction of intermetallic compound phases; this was a result of the increased amount of protective oxidized layers, which protect the Mo<SUB>ss</SUB> phase from oxidation by covering the surface. In addition, Mo-Si-B alloy with smaller intermetallic compound phases pulverized by high-energy ball milling had better high-temperature oxidation resistance compared to Mo-Si-B alloy with as-synthesized intermetallic compound phases.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The volume and size effects on intermetallic compound phases on high-temperature of Mo-Si-B alloys were investigated. </LI> <LI> Mo-Si-B alloys with different volume fractions or sizes of intermetallic compounds were fabricated by powder metallurgy. </LI> <LI> The oxidation resistance of Mo-Si-B alloys was improved with an increasing volume fraction of intermetallic compounds. </LI> <LI> The A3-P specimen had excellent oxidation property compared with the A3 specimen due to formation of oxide layer quickly. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P>The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence, severity and risk factors for atopic dermatitis in Korean pre-school children as determined by dermatological examination vs questionnaire survey. A total of 6,453 pre-school children from 59 kindergartens and 14 day-care centres were evaluated. Parents responded to an International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC)-based questionnaire containing questions concerning 23 risk factors, as well as the prevalence, and severity of atopic dermatitis. Fourteen dermatologists then examined the participants according to the Korean diagnostic criteria for atopic dermatitis, and the Eczema Area and Severity Index (EASI) score. Atopic dermatitis prevalence determined by dermatological examination was lower than the questionnaire-based prevalence (9.2% vs 19.1%). Most patients (96.2%) had mild atopic dermatitis according to the EASI score (mean SD 3.91 4.73; median 1.5; range 0.2-38.0). However, 17.4% had sleep disturbance, and 56.7% had not obtained complete remission of their rash over the previous 12 months. Among the 12 risk factors, 'changing the patient's house to a newly built house during the first year of life' had significant odds ratio. In conclusion, the prevalence of atopic dermatitis in Korea in the ISAAC-based survey conducted by paediatricians was similar to that in several European countries, and lower than the 2006 Korean figure (28.9%). In addition, the prevalence of atopic dermatitis was lower when assessed by dermatological examination than by questionnaire.</P>

<P>To elaborate on the applicability of the electrokinetic micro power generation, we designed and fabricated the silicon-glass as well as the PDMS-glass microfluidic chips with the unique features of a multi-channel. Besides miniaturizing the device, the key advantage of our microfluidic chip utilization lies in the reduction in water flow rate. Both a distributor and a collector taking the tapered duct geometry are positioned aiming the uniform distribution of water flow into all individual channels of the chip, in which several hundreds of single microchannels are assembled in parallel. A proper methodology is developed accompanying the deep reactive ion etching as well as the anodic bonding, and optimum process conditions necessary for hard and soft micromachining are presented. It has been shown experimentally and theoretically that the silicon-based microchannel leads to increasing streaming potential and higher external current compared to those of the PDMS-based one. A proper comparison between experimental results and theoretical computations allows justification of the validity of our novel devices. It is useful to recognize that a material inducing a higher magnitude of zeta potential has an advantage for obtaining higher power density under the same external resistance.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>This paper presents the novel design and fabrication of a microfluidic chip taking the unique features of a high-density multi-channel to realize the concept of electrokinetic streaming potential. Potential urine proteomics biomarkers for primary nephrotic syndrome

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a nonspecific kidney disorder, commonly caused by minimal change disease (MCD), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), and membranous nephropathy (MN). Here we analyzed urinary protein profiles, aiming to discover disease-specific biomarkers of these three common diseases in NS.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Sixteen urine samples were collected from patients with biopsy-proven NS and healthy controls. After removal of high-abundance proteins, the urinary protein profile was analyzed by LC–MS/MS to generate a discovery set. For validation, ELISA was used to analyze the selected proteins in 61 urine samples.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The discovery set included 228 urine proteins, of which 22 proteins were differently expressed in MCD, MN, and FSGS. Among these, C9, CD14, and SERPINA1 were validated by ELISA. All three proteins were elevated in MCD, MN, and FSGS groups compared with in IgA nephropathy and healthy controls. When a regression model was applied, receiver operating characteristic analysis clearly discriminated MCD from the other causative diseases in NS.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>We developed a disease-specific protein panel that discriminated between three main causes of NS. Through this pilot study, we suggest that urine proteomics could be a non-invasive and clinically available tool to discriminate MCD from MN and FSGS.</P><P><B>Electronic supplementary material</B></P><P>The online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12014-017-9153-1) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.</P>
Perceived patient-parent relationships and neural representation of parents in schizophrenia.

<P>Having a relationship with one's parents is a fundamental social interaction and is a significant environmental factor in the long-term course of illness in schizophrenia. We explored subjective reports regarding the communicative relationship with parents and the implicit behavioral and neural responses of patients toward stimuli that referred to parents. Fourteen outpatients with schizophrenia and 15 healthy volunteers with living parents were scanned using a functional magnetic resonance imaging while performing an imaginary sentence completion test that involved contemplation of their mothers and fathers. In patients with schizophrenia, subjective reports of better communicative fluency with one's mother were associated with faster response time and lower incomplete rate, reflecting favorable responses toward mothers. Relative to control participants, patients with schizophrenia demonstrated greater neural activation in the superior temporal sulcus and the parahippocampal gyrus for parental stimuli. When patients with schizophrenia contemplated their mothers, activities in these regions were associated with a level of negative symptoms or affective ambivalence in patients. The results indicated that parental cues are processed in a more socially driven manner, and that perceived communicative relationships with one's parents can be used to estimate implicit responses, especially in relation to mothers in patients with schizophrenia. Furthermore, the findings of the current study suggest that affective ambivalence toward one's mother is one such implicit response and emphasize the importance of prudent family interventions in the psychiatric rehabilitation of patients with schizophrenia.</P>

Novel amino-substituted apio nucleoside (2R, 4R)-LJ-45 as a potential anti-HBV agent was steroselectively synthesized from the known oxazolidine 1 through a distant neighboring group effect. It is believed that this synthetic method using a chiral template, (-)-L-serine methyl ester can be generally applied to the synthesis of other chiral amino-substituted nucleosides.
