        Associations of age, body mass index, and breast size with mammographic breast density in Korean women

        We aimed (a) to investigate the associations between age, body mass index (BMI), and breast size with mammographic density based on the breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS) and volumetric breast density measurement (VBDM) with Volpara, (b) to evaluate the associations of age, BMI, and breast size with fibroglandular tissue volume (FGV), and (c) to demonstrate the association of mammographic density grade with FGV. From April 2012 to May 2012, 1,203 women consecutively underwent mammography, and their breast density was calculated using the density grade and volume determined by Volpara. In total, 427 women were included in this study. The BMI and breast size of the 427 women were determined. The associations between mammographic density and age, BMI, and bra cup size were assessed. In addition, the associations between FGV and age, BMI, bra cup size, and mammographic density were assessed. The mean age of the women was 51 years (range, 27−83). Age was associated with mammographic density based on BI-RADS (P<0.0001), and both age and BMI were associated with mammographic density based on Volpara (P<0.0001). The mean FGV significantly decreased as age increased (P<0.0001) and increased as BMI and bra cup size increased (P<0.0001 and P=0.0007, respectively). Age was associated with mammographic density, according to both the BI-RADS and VBDM; however, BMI was only associated with mammographic density based on the VBDM. Larger FGV was associated with younger age, higher BMI, larger bra cup size, and higher mammographic density.

      • Deep convolutional neural network for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules on ultrasound

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P><B>Background</B></P><P>We designed a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) to diagnose thyroid malignancy on ultrasound (US) and compared the diagnostic performance of CNN with that of experienced radiologists.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Between May 2012 and February 2015, 589 thyroid nodules in 519 patients were diagnosed as benign or malignant by surgical excision. Experienced radiologists retrospectively reviewed the US of the thyroid nodules in a test set. CNNs were trained and tested using retrospective data of 439 and 150 US images, respectively. Diagnostic performances were compared between the two groups.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Of the 589 thyroid nodules, 396 were malignant and 193 were benign. The area under the curve (AUC) for diagnosing thyroid malignancy was 0.805‐0.860 for radiologists. The AUCs for diagnosing thyroid malignancy for the three CNNs were 0.845, 0.835, and 0.850. There was no significant difference in AUC between radiologists and CNNs.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>CNNs showed comparable diagnostic performance compared to experienced radiologists in differentiating thyroid malignancy on US.</P>

        청소년의 자기애가 학교폭력 가해행동에 미치는 영향: 타인인정요구의 조절효과를 중심으로

        본 연구의 목적은 청소년의 자기애 특성이 학교폭력 가해행동에 미치는 영향을 알아보고 타인인정욕구의 조절효과를 검증하는 것이다. 이를 위해 중학생을 대상으로 하여 수도권을 중심으로 오프라인과 온라인 설문을 병행하여 진행하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 22.0을 이용하여 기술통계, 상관분석, 위계적 회귀분석을 실시하였고, 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 외현적 및 내현적자기애는 오프라인과 온라인 학교폭력 가해행동에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 외현적자기애는 비난과 거절 회피욕구와 상호작용하여 오프라인 학교폭력 가해행동에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 내현적자기애는 칭찬과 인정욕구 및 비난과 거절 회피욕구 모두와 상호작용하여 오프라인과 온라인 학교폭력 가해행동에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 내현적자기애와 비난과 거절 회피욕구의 상호작용효과는 온라인 학교폭력 가해행동에 더 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구를 통해, 겉으로 드러나지 않는 내현적자기애의 폭력성을 학교폭력연구에서 확인하였으며, 청소년기 칭찬과 인정욕구와 비난과 거절 회피욕구가 학교폭력 가해행동을 증감시킬 수 있다는 것을 검증하였다. 본 연구는 학교폭력 예방교육 및 상담 현장에 청소년기 자기애 및 타인인정욕구의 특성에 대한 자료를 제공한 측면에서 의의가 있다. The purpose of this study is to verified the effect of adolescent’s narcissism on the school violence behavior and the moderating effects of need for approval. To this end, offline and online surveys were conducted simultaneously for middle school students in the metropolitan area. For the collected data, descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted using SPSS 22.0. The research results are as follows. First, Overt and covert narcissism had an effect on offline and online school violence. Second, Overt narcissism effects offline school violence behavior by interacting with need to avoid criticism and rejection. Third, Covert narcissism interacting with both need for praise and approval and need to avoid criticism, and influenced offline and online school violence. Fourth, The interaction effect between covert narcissism and the need to avoid criticism and rejection had a greater effect on the behavior of online school violence. This study is significant in that it provides data of adolescence's narcissism to school violence prevention education and counseling sites.

        몬테카를로 시뮬레이션을 활용한 스마트 도시재생서비스 도출 및 중요도 산정

        In the current 4th industrial revolution era, there is an increasing interest worldwide in smart cities with smart technology applied to established cities. However, in the process of promoting these smart urban regeneration projects, specific and relevant services must first be introduced; few studies have been conducted on the importance of each. Therefore, this study derives several smart urban regeneration services that can be applied to smart urban regeneration projects while utilizing the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) to supplement the sample limitations and uncertainty risks of existing decision-making methodologies. Therefore, in this study, four types and thirteen detailed services were derived through existing research and related guidelines. Through an expert survey, the importance of each service was calculated, and risks were considered by defining unavoidable, uncertainty factors in a probability distribution using MCS; the process was repeated 100,000 times. The most important service scored 28.4% for Work·Employment, in the detailed service category 9.4% was for the job information service, 9.3% for safe return home service and 9.2% for fire monitoring. These results suggest that smart urban regeneration services should be applied differently according to the location of the target site and the size of the project. Additionally, when implementing smart urban regeneration projects, it is necessary to actively introduce smart urban regeneration services that can help local residents solve job issues, crime and disaster prevention concerns, and environmental problems. From a methodological point of view, this study is significant in that it proposed and utilized MCS to supplement the risk of uncertainty in the existing expert survey. These results are expected to be useful in the process of further promoting smart urban regeneration.

        Regulatory Network of ARF in Cancer Development

        ARF is a tumor suppressor protein that has a pivotal role in the prevention of cancer development through regulating cell proliferation, senescence, and apoptosis. As a factor that induces senescence, the role of ARF as a tumor suppressor is closely linked to the p53-MDM2 axis, which is a key process that restrains tumor formation. Thus, many cancer cells either lack a functional ARF or p53, which enables them to evade cell oncogenic stress-mediated cycle arrest, senescence, or apoptosis. In particular, the ARF gene is a frequent target of genetic and epigenetic alterations including promoter hyper-methylation or gene deletion. However, as many cancer cells still express ARF, pathways that negatively modulate transcriptional or post-translational regulation of ARF could be potentially important means for cancer cells to induce cellular proliferation. These recent findings of regulators affecting ARF protein stability along with its low levels in numerous human cancers indicate the significance of an ARF post-translational mechanism in cancers. Novel findings of regulators stimulating or suppressing ARF function would provide new therapeutic targets to manage cancer- and senescence-related diseases. In this review, we present the current knowledge on the regulation and alterations of ARF expression in human cancers, and indicate the importance of regulators of ARF as a prognostic marker and in potential therapeutic strategies.

      • Foreign body granuloma after filler injection treated with liposuction

        Dermal fillers became one of the most widely used cosmetic tools. Foreign body granuloma (FBG) is delayed complications and usually treated with systemic steroid and intralesional steroid injection. In a few cases of FBG due to permanent filler, surgical excision is indicated to eliminate affected tissue. A 47-year-old woman presented with 3-week history of diffuse facial swelling and multiple skin-colored nodules on the forehead, both cheeks and nasolabial folds. She had received filler injection with unknown material on the above mentioned sites 10 years ago. Biopsy from one of the nodule showed multiple oval vacuoles surrounded by lymphohistiocytes and multinucleated giant cells in deep dermis and subcutis, so called Swiss-cheese appearance. From these findings, patient was diagnosed with FBG due to unabsorbable filler material. She showed response to systemic steroid and intralesional injection of triamcinolone for a while, but nodular lesions recurred including where the filler had not been injected. Considering waxing and waning nature of cutaneous lesions with diffuse and deep involvement in histopathology, she underwent foreign body removal and liposuction. Skin lesions showed improvement and have been maintained. Herein, we reported a case of FBG treated with liposuction and physicians may consider liposuction as an option for the treatment of intractable FBG.

      • Identification of New Isolates of Phytophthora sojae and Selection of Resistant Soybean Genotypes

        Phytophthora root and stem rot (PRR), caused by Phytophthora sojae, can occur at any growth stage under poorly drained and humid conditions. The expansion of soybean cultivation in South Korean paddy fields has increased the frequency of PRR outbreaks. This study aimed to identify four P. sojae isolates newly collected from domestic fields and evaluate race-specific resistance using the hypocotyl inoculation technique. The four isolates exhibited various pathotypes, with GJ3053 exhibiting the highest virulence complexity. Two isolates, GJ3053 and AD3617, were screened from 205 soybeans, and 182 and 190 genotypes (88.8 and 92.7%, respectively) were susceptible to each isolate. Among these accessions, five genotypes resistant to both isolates were selected. These promising genotypes are candidates for the development of resistant soybean cultivars that can effectively control PRR through gene stacking.
