Prevalence of Incidentally Detected Spondylolysis in Children

Purpose To assess the prevalence of incidentally detected lumbar spondylolysis in children. Materials and Methods We retrospectively reviewed the data of 809 patients under the age of 11 years (mean age, 7.0 ± 2.7 years; boys:girls = 479:330) who underwent abdominal and pelvic CT between March 2014 and December 2018. We recorded the presence, level, and laterality (unilateral or bilateral) of spondylolysis. Patients were divided into two groups based on the presence of spondylolysis: the spondylolysis (SP) and non-SP groups. Results In total, 21 cases of spondylolysis were detected in 20 patients (20/809, 2.5%). The mean age of the SP group was higher than that of the non-SP group (7.8 ± 1.8 vs. 6.9 ± 2.7 years, p > 0.05). The prevalence of spondylolysis in boys was higher than that in girls (15/479 [3.1%] vs. 5/330 [1.5%], p > 0.05). The prevalence of spondylolysis in school-age children (6–10 year olds) was higher than that in preschool-age children (0–5 year olds) (17/538 [3.2%] vs. 3/271 [1.1%], p > 0.05). L5 was the most common level of spondylolysis (76.2%); one 8-year-old boy had twolevel spondylolysis. One case of isthmic spondylolisthesis was detected in a 10-year-old boy (1/809, 0.1%). There were 11 unilateral spondylolysis cases (11/21, 52.4%). Conclusion In our study, the prevalence of spondylolysis in children under the age of 11 was 2.5%. The prevalence was higher in boys than in girls and in school-age than in preschool-age children, despite the lack of any statistically significant differences.

Pancreatic cancer is among the most difficult-to-treat tumors. More than half of patients with this cancer have very few symptoms at the early stages, allowing the development of distant metastases and resistance to cancer treatment. In this study, we found that Juniperus chinensis extract (JCX) decreased the cell viability and migration activity of PANC-1 and SNU-213 pancreatic cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner. JCX increased caspase- 3 activation and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Nacetylcysteine treatment blocked JCX-induced ROS generation and the negative effects on pancreatic cancer cell viability. In addition, JCX down-regulated the levels of phospho-focal adhesion kinase (p-FAK) and phospho-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (p-ERK). Together, these results indicate that JCX induces apoptosis in human pancreatic cancer cell lines through ROS production, downregulating FAK/ERK signaling and activating caspase-3. We propose that JCX-derived compounds represent candidates for the development of alternative medicines for the treatment of pancreatic cancer.

<P>Among the members of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family that affect the growth, differentiation, migration, and survival of many cell types, FGF2 is the most abundant in the central nervous system. Because of its wound healing effects, FGF2 has potential as a therapeutic agent. The protein is also added to the culture media to maintain stem cells. Expression and purification procedures for FGF2 that are highly efficient and low cost have been intensively investigated for the past two decades. Our current study focuses on the purification of FGF2 fused with b'a' domains of human protein disulfide isomerase to elevate overexpression, solubility, and stability with a simplified experimental procedure using only ion exchange chromatography, as well as on the confirmation of the biological activity of FGF2 on fibroblast Balb/c 3T3 cells and hippocampal neural cells.</P>

<P>The influence of fringe field on nano-electro-mechanical (NEM) memory cells has been investigated. Because fringe field effects become stronger with cells scaling down, it becomes more difficult to predict the characteristics of small-sized NEM memory cells accurately. In this paper, fringe field effects have been included into a finite-element model. The dependence of fringe field effects on cell parameters has also been evaluated.</P>
한국판 다차원 상태 지루함 척도(K-MSBS)의 타당화

This study aimed to validate the Multidimensional State Boredom Scale (MSBS) developed by Fahlman et al. (2013). A revised preliminary scale, based on input from the original author Eastwood, was used with 146 college students. Exploratory factor analysis revealed 29 items distributed across four factors. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted on both the four-factor model and the original author's five-factor model, using data from 279 university students. The five-factor 29-item scale was deemed more appropriate. Internal consistency for reliability was high at .966, and test-retest reliability(n=45) at 3-4 week intervals was .61. Validity was assessed through correlations between state boredom and boredom proneness, depression, and impulsivity. Significant correlations were found, supporting both criterion and convergent validity. This study will contribute to the validation of a boredom measure that will be relevant to clinical difficulties and can be utilized in the prevention and treatment of psychological problems. 이 연구의 목적은 Fahlman, Mercer-Lynn, Flora와 Eastwood(2013)이 개발한 다차원 상태 지루함 척도(MSBS)를 타당화하는 것이다. 원저자인 Eastwood의 의견에 기반하여 번안한 예비문항을 통해 전국대학생 146명의 자료를 수집하여 탐색적 요인분석을 실시한 결과 4요인의 29문항으로 선정되었다. 이후 수집된 전국 대학생 279명의 자료를 활용하여 4요인 모형과 원저자의 5요인 모형에 대해 확인적 요인분석을 실시해 비교한 결과, 5요인의 29문항이 더 적합하게 나타났다. 더불어 신뢰도 검증을 위한 내적합치도는 .966으로 나타났고, 3~4주 간격으로 확인한 검사-재검사 신뢰도(n=45)는 .61이었으며, 타당도 검증을 위해 살펴본 상태 지루함과 권태 성향, 우울, 충동성 간의 상관이 유의미하여 준거타당도와수렴타당도가 입증되었다. 이 연구는 임상적 어려움과 관련이 있는 지루함을 측정할 수 있는 척도를 타당화한 것으로 심리적 문제의 예방 및 치료에 활용할 수 있을 것이다.

Human CYP2J2 isoform, the only member of the human CYP2J subfamily, is also over-expressed in human liver carcinoma tissues and hepatocarcinoma cells, and promotes tumor growth and proliferation. 4'-(p-Toluenesulfonylamide)-4-hydroxychalcone (TSAHC) is a synthetic sulfonylamino chalcone compound, which has anti-cancer effect. Inhibitory potential of a promising anti-cancer agent TSAHC against CYP2J2 activity was evaluated using human liver microsomes. TSAHC inhibited CYP2J2-mediated astemizole O-demethylation activity with $K_i$ value of $2.03{\pm}0.40{\mu}M$ in a competitive mode, suggesting that TSAHC is a potential candidate for further evaluation for its CYP2J2 targeting anti-cancer activities. Studies are presently underway to estimate TSAHC as potential therapeutic agent for cancer.
