Reaction diffusion and formation of Ni_3AL phase with L1_2 structure has been studied at temperature from 1423 to 1573K using the diffusion couple of (Ni-40.5at%Al)/(Ni-15at%Al) and (Ni-49.2at%Al)/(Nickel). The layer growth of Ni_3-Al phase in the annealed diffusion couple was measured by optical microscope and electron probe microanalyzer(EPMA). The layer growth of Ni_3Al phase in this experimental temperature range was controlled by the volume diffusion mechanism. The rate of layer growth of Ni_3-Al phase was found to be closely related to the composition of NiAl phase. The activation energy for layer growth of Ni_3Al phase was calculated to be 127kJ/mol.

Objective : Our purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the transcatheter arterial embolization for the management of abnormal uterine bleeding. Materials and Methods : 14 patients with massive or recurrent uterine bleeding underwent percutaneous transcatheter arterial embolization between February 2003 and September 2004. We reviewed 14 cases of uterine artery or internal iliac artery embolization using gelfoam or PVA particles. Results : Good management of uterine bleeding was achieved in 13 of 14(93%) cases. The cause of abnormal uterine bleeding was myoma(5 case), post D & E bleeding(3), acquired vascular malformation(3), pseudoaneurysm(1), adenomyosis(1), and endometrial hyperplasia(1). Conclusion : Transcatheter artery embolization is an effective and life-saving procedure in massive or recurrent uterine bleeding. Early diagnosis and prompt transcatheter arterial embolization is a useful mangement of uterine bleeding.

In this paper, we apply the controller output error method to the adaptive fuzzy control design. This method employs a gradient descent algorithm to minimize a error function which is beased on the error at the controller output. This contrasts with more conventional methods which use the error at the plant output. The error function is minimized by adapting some or allof the parameters of the fuzzy controller. In this paper, we propose to revise the consequent parameter. The proposed adaptive fuzzy controller is applied to the adaptive control of a nonlinear plant and is shown to be capable of providing good overall system performance.

This paper describes a fundamental investigation of the friction welding condition for the pure copper/ pure titanium joining and the effect of friction time, upset pressure on the mechanical and metallurgical properties of the joint. Taguchi method has been adopted for investigating the contribution of welding variables. Under a constant upset pressure, the tensile strength have a little difference with an increase in friction time. At a constant friction time, the tensile strength increased with an increase in the upset pressure. The tensile fracture of Cu to Ti joint occurred at the Cu base material near the interface.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a rare disorder characterized by the triad of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. HUS arises from a wide spectrum of conditions, and chemotherapeutic agents have been reported to be associated with HUS, including Mitomycin, Cisplatin, Bleomycin, and Gemcitabine. A 76-year-old man treated with Gemcitabine due to non-small cell lung cancer developed clinical and laboratory findings compatible with HUS. Gemcitabine was ceased and hemodialysis and plasma exchange were utilized and he recovered. A high level of suspicion for HUS is necessary when cancer patients are treated with Gemcitabine, and prompt recognition and treatment are also essential.

<P>Licochalcones have a variety of biological properties including anti-tumor, anti-parasitic and anti-bacterial activities. Recently, a new retrochalcone (licochalcone E, Lico-E) was isolated from the roots of <I>Glycyrrhiza inflata</I> (<I>Chem. Pharm. Bull.</I>, 53, 2005, Yoon <I>et al.</I>) by cytotoxicity-guided fractionation. This study examined whether or not Lico-E-induced endothelial cell death occurs through apoptosis, and investigated molecular mechanisms involved in this process. Lico-E was found to suppress ECV304 cell growth and induce apoptosis. The induction of apoptosis by Lico-E was confirmed by the ladder-patterned DNA fragmentation, the presence of cleaved and condensed nuclear chromatin and the increased number of annexin V-positive cells. Lico-E could effectively inhibit the constitutive NF-κB activation, as revealed by the electrophoretic mobility shift assay and NF-κB-dependent luciferase reporter study. In addition, the Lico-E treatment caused a change in the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio that favored apoptosis. These results suggest that Lico-E induces endothelial cell apoptosis by modulating NF-κB and the Bcl-2 family.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Ag circuit embedded in polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate were fabricated through photonic sintering and transfer of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) for reducing processing time, cost, damage to the substrate, and delamination caused by the low surface energy of PDMS. The photonic energy led to the microstructural evolution of a printed Ag circuit by rapid cluster formation and by removing the organics within several microseconds. Variations of surface roughness showed increasing trends at higher photonic energy conditions and drastic decrease after the embedding process. Hardness and electrical resistivity were measured before and after PDMS embedding, and after the second photonic sintering at various photonic energy conditions. The Ag circuit embedded in the PDMS substrate showed improved hardness by 207% due to the denser microstructure of the flipped surface and increased electrical resistivity increasing by 54% on average. Moreover, the effects of second sintering on the microstructure, electrical, and mechanical properties and the electrochemical reliability of the embedded Ag circuit are also studied.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Embedding of metal nanoparticles in PDMS substrate was devised. </LI> <LI> Ag nanoparticles were sintered at various photonic energy conditions and they show the microstructural evolution. </LI> <LI> Increased electrical conductivity and ECM lifetime of Ag circuit with increasing photonic energy were identified. </LI> </UL> </P>
Myanmar Parents’ Views on Home Math Environment in Three Countries: Myanmar, Korea, and the U.S.

This study explores the views of Myanmar parents on the home math environment for their young children in Myanmar, Korea, and the U.S. Previous research has focused on understanding parental practices within Western contexts, yet studies have shown that cultural factors may influence parents' views on the home math environment. The participants comprised of two parents respectively from Myanmar, Korea, and the United States. By utilizing a survey, individual interviews, video recordings of math activities, and reflective video interviews, this study revealed that most Myanmar parents perceived preschool education as the primary avenue for teaching their children mathematics and overlooked the value of home-based learning as a valuable resource. Additionally, these parents seldom considered their role in supporting their children's mathematical development at home. The study highlights the significance of comprehending parents' implicit views regarding providing a conducive home math environment before analyzing their actual practices.
