Most who have heard of Sang-Seol Lee know him for his contribution to the Korean independence movement nearly a hundred years ago. This paper, however, will discuss Lee's other great contribution to his country; that of being "The father of modern mathematical education in Korea". Lee passed the rigorous government officer examination with the highest honor and became a teacher for the royal prince. Later he became the president of Sunkyunkwan, a national institute of higher learning since 1398, and eventually a well-known university bearing the same name. Lee was also a highly regarded Confucian scholar and well versed in foreign languages. He wanted Korea to become a modern country and felt that the areas of science and engineering were studies that needed improving in order to achieve modernization. While researching Western textbooks on the subjects he realized that Western mathematics would be especially important for Korea. With that, it became his mission to integrate Western mathematics into the Korean educational system. This paper will explain the importance of Sang-Seol Lee's contributions to mathematic education in Korea and how it helped Korea become the modern nation it is today.

Background/Aims: The prevalence of single-person households has rapidly increased in Korea. Individuals living alone and in rural areas may have a higher risk of various metabolic diseases due to differences in lifestyle. However, few studies have investigated the association of household size and residential area with health-related problems. This study aimed to evaluate the association of household size and residential area with risk of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Methods: This cross-sectional study enrolled 3,058 postmenopausal women from the 2008 to 2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES). We examined the association between bone mineral density (BMD) and household size and residential area. Results: Individuals living in rural areas had significantly lower BMD of the lumbar spine than those living in an urban area. Subsequently, we divided the participants into four groups according to household size and residential areas. Lumbar spine BMD was significantly lower in individuals living in rural singleperson households than those in urban households with two or more individuals, even after adjustment for multiple confounding factors. In addition, individuals in rural single-person households had significantly greater odds of osteoporosis in the lumbar spine than those in urban households with two or more residents. Conclusions: Individuals in rural single-person households had significantly lower BMD and greater odds of osteoporosis in lumbar spine than urban households with two or more individuals. The results of this study suggest that individuals living in rural single-person households may benefit from more careful screening for osteoporosis.
Chemical reactivity of oxide materials with uranium and uranium trichloride
Sung Ho Lee,Choon Ho Cho,Yoon Sang Lee,Han Soo Lee,Jeong-Guk Kim 한국화학공학회 2010 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.27 No.6
A graphite crucible is used for the manufacturing of uranium ingots in the uranium casting equipment of the electrorefining process. Uranium and uranium alloys are typically induction melted in graphite crucibles under a vacuum condition; however, due to the chemical reactivity of uranium and most alloying elements with carbon, a protective ceramic coating is generally applied to the graphite crucibles. To investigate the most suitable ceramic coating material for application to graphite melting crucibles used for the melting uranium in uranium casting equipment, firstly,a thermodynamic analysis using HSC software was performed to examine the chemical reactivity of ceramic oxide materials with uranium and uranium trichloride, and also, experiments concerning the reactivity of molten uranium in some ceramic coated crucibles were performed at 1,300 oC. From the results, yttria was finally selected as the most suitable ceramic coating material for application to graphite crucibles for melting the uranium.

Objectives

Serum or plasma microRNAs (miRNAs) are potential biomarkers for the diagnosis for cancer and prenatal diseases. This study was conducted to investigate whether rabies virus causes a change in serum miRNA expression.

Methods

ICR mice were intramuscularly inoculated with rabies virus and were sacrificed weekly to collect serum and brain tissue for 4 weeks postinoculation. Mice were assigned to four groups based on the results of indirect immunofluorescent assays, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and nested reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and the expression profiles of serum miRNAs were compared using a commercial mouse miRNA expression profiling assay.

Results

The expression levels of miRNAs changed significantly with the different stages of the disease. The expression level of 94 serum miRNAs in infected mice changed at least twofold. Seven microRNAs of them were significantly upregulated or downregulated in all infected mice regardless of disease status. The number of miRNAs with an expression level change decreased with the progression of the disease. In a hierarchical cluster analysis, infected mice clustered into a group separate from uninfected control mice.

Conclusions

Based on the relationship of miRNAs to gene expression regulation, miRNAs may be candidates for the study of viral pathogenesis and could have potential as biomarkers.

Voter model on a directed network: role of bidirectional opinion exchanges.
Han, Sung-Guk,Um, Jaegon,Kim, Beom Jun Published by the American Physical Society through 2010 Physical review. E, Statistical, nonlinear, and so Vol.81 No.5

The voter model with the node update rule is numerically investigated on a directed network. We start from a directed hierarchical tree, and split and rewire each incoming arc at the probability p . In order to discriminate the better and worse opinions, we break the Z2 symmetry (?=±1) by giving a little more preference to the opinion ?=1 . It is found that as p becomes larger, introducing more complicated pattern of information flow channels, and as the network size N becomes larger, the system eventually evolves to the state in which more voters agree on the better opinion, even though the voter at the top of the hierarchy keeps the worse opinion. We also find that the pure hierarchical tree makes opinion agreement very fast, while the final absorbing state can easily be influenced by voters at the higher ranks. On the other hand, although the ordering occurs much slower, the existence of complicated pattern of bidirectional information flow allows the system to agree on the better opinion.

Reentrant phase transition in a predator-prey model.
Han, Sung-Guk,Park, Su-Chan,Kim, Beom Jun Published by the American Physical Society through 2009 Physical review. E, Statistical, nonlinear, and so Vol.79 No.6

We numerically investigate the six-species predator-prey game in complex networks as well as in d -dimensional regular hypercubic lattices with d=1,2,...,6 . The food-web topology of the six species contains two directed loops, each of which is composed of cyclically predating three species. As the mutation rate is lowered below the well-defined phase transition point, the Z2 symmetry related with the interchange in the two loops is spontaneously broken, and it has been known that the system develops the defensive alliance in which three cyclically predating species defend each other against the invasion of other species. In the Watts-Strogatz small-world network structure characterized by the rewiring probability alpha , the phase diagram shows the reentrant behavior as alpha is varied, indicating a twofold role of the shortcuts. In d -dimensional regular hypercubic lattices, the system also exhibits the reentrant phase transition as d is increased. We identify universality class of the phase transition and discuss the proper mean-field limit of the system.
