Quasi-Normal Relations - a New Class of Relations

In this paper, concepts of quasi-normal and dually quasi-normal relations are introduced. Characterizations of these relations are obtained. In addition, particulary we show that the anti-order relation ${\nleqslant}$ ($={\leqslant}^C$) is a (dually) quasi-normal relation if and only if the partially ordered set (X, ${\leqslant}$) is an anti-chain.

Epidemiological study on strongyloidiasis in humans is currently lacking in Malaysia. Thus, a cross-sectional study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection among the inhabitants of longhouse indigenous communities in Sarawak. A single stool and blood sample were collected from each participant and subjected to microscopy, serological and molecular techniques. Five species of intestinal parasites were identified by stool microscopy. None of the stool samples were positive for S. stercoralis. However, 11% of 236 serum samples were seropositive for strongyloidiasis. Further confirmation using molecular technique on stool samples of the seropositive individuals successfully amplified 5 samples, suggesting current active infections. The prevalence was significantly higher in adult males and tended to increase with age. S. stercoralis should no longer be neglected in any intestinal parasitic survey. Combination of more than 1 diagnostic technique is necessary to increase the likelihood of estimating the ‘true’ prevalence of S. stercoralis.
Evolving Conceptualizations of Peace Education in Hiroshima, Japan

Japan is a world leader in peace education, and Hiroshima is one of the world’scenters for peace. While the peer-reviewed literature on Japanese peace educationis growing, few studies address how present-day peace educators in Hiroshimaconceptualize peace education. This study aims to better understand how peaceeducators in Hiroshima (re)conceptualize, adapt, and apply their work. Using agrounded theory approach, we answer the following research questions: (a) Howdo contemporary peace educators in Hiroshima conceptualize their work? (b) Howhas this conceptualization changed or evolved over time? Interviewees presentedconvergent and divergent insights around three main themes: definitions of peaceas a collective identity and constructivist process, metaphors for peace as informingpedagogy, and efforts to challenge taboos through a social justice lens.
Bridging Solutions for a Heterogeneous WiMAX-WiFi Scenario

Recently, the metropolitan area network (MAN) has attracted much attention in telecommunication research and has emerged as one of the most important research topics in the community. Several standards representing the first step for developing metropolitan networks have been published; IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) has taken a relevant role in reaching the goal of realizing a full-service network all over a urban and suburban area. At the same time, the wireless local area networks (WLAN) have been widely used for in-home or short range communications, mainly basing on the IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) standard. A consequence is the increasing interest in interworking technology, that allows an interconnection between different standards by maintaining certain properties, mainly in terms of quality of service (QoS). One of the major issues is to design bridging devices capable of transparently interconnect different wireless technologies. In this paper, we propose two interconnection bridging solutions between WiMAX and WiFi links; the first is more based on the concept of maintaining a certain end-to-end QoS level independently from the wireless technologies used. The second method is more devoted to the reduction of the implementation complexity at the cost of no QoS assurance. The performance of the two methods are compared by resorting to computer simulations showing the advantages of each one technique.

Besides recent progresses in the physics-based modelling of fission gas and helium behaviour, thescarcity of experimental data concerning their combined behaviour (i.e., cocktail) hinders further modeldevelopments. For this reason, in this work, we propose a modelling methodology aimed at providingrecommendations for accelerated experimental investigations. By exploring a wide range of annealingtemperatures and cocktail compositions with a physics-based modelling approach we identify the mostinteresting conditions to be targeted by future experiments. To corroborate the recommendations arisingfrom the proposed methodology, we include a sensitivity analysis quantifying the impact of the modelparameters on fission gas and helium release, in conditions representative of high and low burnup
Limits on the efficiency of event-based algorithms for Monte Carlo neutron transport

The traditional form of parallelism in Monte Carlo particle transport simulations, wherein each individual particle history is considered a unit of work, does not lend itself well to data-level parallelism. Event-based algorithms, which were originally used for simulations on vector processors, may offer a path toward better utilizing data-level parallelism in modern computer architectures. In this study, a simple model is developed for estimating the efficiency of the event-based particle transport algorithm under two sets of assumptions. Data collected from simulations of four reactor problems using OpenMC was then used in conjunction with the models to calculate the speedup due to vectorization as a function of the size of the particle bank and the vector width. When each event type is assumed to have constant execution time, the achievable speedup is directly related to the particle bank size. We observed that the bank size generally needs to be at least 20 times greater than vector size to achieve vector efficiency greater than 90%. When the execution times for events are allowed to vary, the vector speedup is also limited by differences in the execution time for events being carried out in a single event-iteration.

The feeding preference of the drywood termite Cryptotermes cynocephalus Light (Isoptera: Kalotermitidae) was investigated against five fast growing industrial tree plantation species in the Philippines, viz., Gmelina arborea Roxb, Acacia mangium Willd Paraserianthes falcataria (L.) Nielsen, Swietenia macrophylla King, and Eucalyptus deglupta Blume. No-choice and choice feeding tests were conducted to determine mass loss, wood consumption, level of resistance, and termite survival after 12 weeks of exposure period. Results showed that the order of feeding preference of C. cynocephalus from most to least preferred was P. falcataria, A. mangium, G. arborea, S. macrophylla and E. deglupta in no-choice and choice feeding tests.
Prevention in the twenty-first century: promoting health and well-being in education and psychology

This paper explores the science of prevention, with special attention to prevention research and applications in education and psychology, and the importance of prevention in Asian countries. One example that will be highlighted is the recently adopted Korean government policy on Internet addiction which addresses the problem from prevention to treatment. In addition, the paper provides background by summarizing the history of prevention and definitions of prevention. Research and conceptual papers that have been published in the Asian Pacific Education Review serve as examples of important topics to address from a prevention perspective. The topics are school bullying, school achievement, career development, and educator professional development and educational reform. The paper also discusses prevention best practices by summarizing the recently adopted American Psychological Association Guidelines for Prevention in Psychology, emphasizing that the Guidelines are applicable for professions beyond psychology and they also apply in different parts of the world. Finally, the paper discusses prevention in the future, especially noting that advances in science, technology, and population demographics will increase the importance of prevention in the twenty-first century.
