A Scoping Review to Map the Evidence on the Use of Sandplay to Understand the Subjective Experience

An interest in applying creative arts-based research approaches, such as sandplay in the health and social care contexts, is growing worldwide. The aim of our study was to identify the existing studies that use sandplay as a method or intervention and their impact on different target groups in health and social care settings. We conducted this review following the Joanna Briggs Institute’s method for scoping reviews, using Arksey and O’Malley’s five-stage scoping review framework. We conducted a comprehensive search in the CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE Complete and the Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection databases. A search strategy with selected inclusion and exclusion criteria was used to reveal a wide range of evidence. This study included quantitative and qualitative studies published in English from 2009 to 2019. Thirty-two studies formed the final data set and, ultimately, we selected seven published papers for our review. Most of the participants in these studies were children aged from 4 to 17 years. The scoping review highlighted the use of sandplay as a method to express and understand a person’s day to day lived experiences, especially with children. A joyful, accepting, individual centered and positive therapeutic environment reportedly characterized the sandplay sessions. And it was a valuable arts-based approach that positively affected the participants’ mental health and well-being, community building, creative self-expression, self-acceptance, problem solving and empowerment.

To evaluate the clinical efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness of endometrial ablation or resection (E:A/R) compared to hysterectomy for the treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding. Literature search was conducted, and randomized control trials (RCTs) comparing (E:A/R) versus hysterectomy were reviewed. The search was last updated in November 2022. Twelve RCTs with 2,028 women (hysterectomy: n=977 vs. [E:A/R]: n=1,051) were included in the analyzis. The meta-analysis revealed that the hysterectomy group showed improved patient-reported and objective bleeding symptoms more than those of the (E:A/R) group, with risk ratios of (mean difference [MD], 0.75; 95% confidence intervals [CI], 0.71 to 0.79) and (MD, 44.00; 95% CI, 36.09 to 51.91), respectively. Patient satisfaction was higher post-hysterectomy than (E:A/R) at 2 years of follow-up, but this effect was absent with long-term follow-up. (E:A/R) is considered an alternative to hysterectomy as a surgical management for heavy menstrual bleeding. Although both procedures are highly effective, safe, and improve the quality of life, hysterectomy is significantly superior at improving bleeding symptoms and patient satisfaction for up to 2 years. However, it is associated with longer operating and recovery times and a higher rate of postoperative complications. The initial cost of (E:A/R) is less than the cost of hysterectomy, but further surgical requirements are common; therefore, there is no difference in the cost for long-term follow-up.
Core–shell strain structure of zeolite microcrystals

Zeolites are crystalline aluminosilicate minerals featuring a network of 0.3–1.5-nm-wide pores, used in industry as catalysts for hydrocarbon interconversion, ion exchangers, molecular sieves and adsorbents. For improved applications, it is highly useful to study the distribution of internal local strains because they sensitively affect the rates of adsorption and diffusion of guest molecules within zeolites. Here, we report the observation of an unusual triangular deformation field distribution in ZSM-5 zeolites by coherent X-ray diffraction imaging, showing the presence of a strain within the crystal arising from the heterogeneous core–shell structure, which is supported by finite element model calculation and confirmed by fluorescence measurement. The shell is composed of H-ZSM-5 with intrinsic negative thermal expansion whereas the core exhibits a different thermal expansion behaviour due to the presence of organic template residues, which usually remain when the starting materials are insufficiently calcined. Engineering such strain effects could have a major impact on the design of future catalysts.
