Development and performance characteristics of silane crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan membranes for reverse osmosis

        M. Shafiq,A. Sabir,A. Islam,S.M. Khan,S.N. Hussain,M.T.Z. Z. Butt,T. Jamil 한국공업화학회 2017 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.48 No.-

Novel thinfilm poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan (PVA/CS) based reverse osmosis membranes infused withsilane crosslinked tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) were prepared by dissolution casting methodology. Theperformance characteristics and the scope of the reverse osmosis membranes were explicated by Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), differential scanningcalorimetery (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle, X-ray diffraction (XRD) andreverse osmosis (RO) permeation tests which determined the functional groups and network of covalentcrosslinks, thermal properties, morphology, hydrophilicity, structural investigation and RO properties, respectively. It was found that the membrane surface became smoother, more hydrophilic, withimproved thermal stability, increased salt rejection and good permeationflux after the appropriateinfusion of TEOS. The crosslinked membranes showed more hydrophilicity compared to theuncrosslinked PVCS membrane. The SEM micrographs of membranes revealed dense structure withno mottled surfaces. PVCS-4 showed an optimalflux of 1.84 L/m2h and 80% salt rejection that confirmedthe selective interaction of TEOS molecules with PVA/CS polymer backbone compared to the pristine(PVCS) membrane. The antibacterial properties of the membranes showed the inhibition of the growth ofEscherichia coli successfully.

Elemental and Nutritional Analysis of Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides ssp. turkestanica) Berries of Pakistani Origin

        S.M. Sabir,H. Maqsood,Imran Hayat,M.Q. Khan,A. Khaliq 한국식품영양과학회 2005 Journal of medicinal food Vol.8 No.4

Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides ssp. turkestanica) is a very important medicinal plant in northern ar-eas of Pakistan. The fruit of sea buckthorn is rich in nutrients and medicinal compounds such as vitamins, carotene, flavonoids, essential oil, carbohydrates, organic acids, amino acids, and minerals. In order to compare various populations of sea buck-thorn for chemical composition, eight populations from different areas of northern Pakistan were compared using fruit char-acteristics. Phytochemical analysis of berries showed vitamin C (250333 mg/100 g), seed oil (7.6913.7%), oil in softer pulp(19.229.1%), phytosterol content of seed oil (3.35.5%), and anthocyanin (0.525 mg/L), while the mineral element com-position analysis revealed high contents of potassium (140360 ppm), sodium (2080 ppm), calcium (7098 ppm), magne-sium (150240 ppm), iron (40150 ppm), and phosphorus (110133 ppm). This study established sea buckthorn berries as agood source of biochemical and mineral elements. The high variation between different populations shows the potential ofselecting and breeding of the raw material for various defined purposes.

      • Acetylation of Retinoblastoma Like Protein2 (Rb2/p130) in Tumor Tissues

Khan, Z.N.,Sabir, M.,Kayani, M.A.,Saeed, M. Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.4

The activity of Rb proteins is controlled by post-translational modifications, especially through phosphorylation. Acetylation of Rb2/p130 was reported recently in NIH3T3 cells but its physiological relevance in cell cycle control and tumorigenesis is still unknown. Efforts are underway to investigate possible interplay between Rb2/p130 phosphorylation and acetylation. Here we hypothesized that Rb2/p130 acetylation, like p53 acetylation, may play a role in development of the tumor phenotype. The proposed hypothesis regarding acetylation of Rb2/p130 in tumor VS normal cells was found to be true in our case study of 36 tumor samples. Statistical analysis of results suggest strong correlation among Rb2/p130 acetylation and cancer phenotype.

An Application of Binary Soft Mappings to the Problem in Medical Expert Systems

        Sabir Hussain,Mashael M.A. Alkhalifah 한국전산응용수학회 2020 Journal of applied mathematics & informatics Vol.38 No.5

We initiate and introduce the notion of binary soft mapping, which is defined on collection of binary soft sets named as binary soft class over two initial universes U_{1} and U_{2} with fixed set of parameters. We also define and study the properties of binary soft images and binary soft inverse images of binary soft sets. Examples and counter examples are also given in support of presented properties. Moreover, these concepts are applied to the problem of medical diagnosis in medical expert systems.

Gene Expression Profiling and Assessment of Vitamin D and Serotonin Pathway Variations in Patients With Irritable Bowel Syndrome

        ( Christopher M Dussik ),( Maryam Hockley ),( Aleksandra Grozi ),( Ichiro Kaneko ),( Lin Zhang ),( Marya S Sabir ),( Jin Park ),( Jie Wang ),( Cheryl A Nickerson ),( Steven H Yale ),( Christopher J Ra 대한소화기기능성질환·운동학회(구 대한소화관운동학회) 2018 Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility (JNM Vol.24 No.1

Background/Aims Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a multifaceted disorder that afflicts millions of individuals worldwide. IBS is currently diagnosed based on the presence/duration of symptoms and systematic exclusion of other conditions. A more direct manner to identify IBS is needed to reduce healthcare costs and the time required for accurate diagnosis. The overarching objective of this work is to identify gene expression-based biological signatures and biomarkers of IBS. Methods Gene transcripts from 24 tissue biopsy samples were hybridized to microarrays for gene expression profiling. A combination of multiple statistical analyses was utilized to narrow the raw microarray data to the top 200 differentially expressed genes between IBS versus control subjects. In addition, quantitative polymerase chain reaction was employed for validation of the DNA microarray data. Gene ontology/pathway enrichment analysis was performed to investigate gene expression patterns in biochemical pathways. Finally, since vitamin D has been shown to modulate serotonin production in some models, the relationship between serum vitamin D and IBS was investigated via 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) chemiluminescence immunoassay. Results A total of 858 genetic features were identified with differential expression levels between IBS and asymptomatic populations. Gene ontology enrichment analysis revealed the serotonergic pathway as most prevalent among the differentially expressed genes. Further analysis via real-time polymerase chain reaction suggested that IBS patient-derived RNA exhibited lower levels of tryptophan hydroxylase-1 expression, the enzyme that catalyzes the rate-limiting step in serotonin biosynthesis. Finally, mean values for 25(OH)D were lower in IBS patients relative to non-IBS controls. Conclusions Values for serum 25(OH)D concentrations exhibited a trend towards lower vitamin D levels within the IBS cohort. In addition, the expression of select IBS genetic biomarkers, including tryptophan hydroxylase 1, was modulated by vitamin D. Strikingly, the direction of gene regulation elicited by vitamin D in colonic cells is “opposite” to the gene expression profile observed in IBS patients, suggesting that vitamin D may help “reverse” the pathological direction of biomarker gene expression in IBS. Thus, our results intimate that IBS pathogenesis and pathophysiology may involve dysregulated serotonin production and/or vitamin D insufficiency. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2018;24:96-106)

The study of electronic, elastic, magnetic and optical response of Zn1-xTixY (Y=S, Se) through mBJ potential

        Q. Mahmood,M. Hassan,M.A. Faridi,B. Sabir,G. Murtaza,Asif Mahmood 한국물리학회 2016 Current Applied Physics Vol.16 No.5

To explore the structural, electronic, magnetic and optical properties of Zn1-xTixY (Y=S, Se) alloys, in the composition range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1, we have applied full-potential linearized augmented plane wave plus local orbital (FP-LAPW + lo) scheme, which is based on the density functional theory (DFT). Structural optimizations have been done in ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase by using Wu eCohen generalized gradient approximation (WC-GGA), whereas recently developed modified Becke and Johnson (mBJ) potential was employed to study electronic and optical properties. The lower value of ground state energy and negative enthalpy of formation confirm stability in the FM phase. Due to the spin polarization of electrons in the Ti-d orbital, origin of half-metallic ferromagnetism has been expressed by the calculated band structures, electronic density of states (DOS) and magnetic moments. We also have calculated the exchange splitting energy Dx (d), crystal field energy (DEcrystal = Et2g Eeg) and exchange constants (N0a and N0b). The negative value of exchange constant (N0b) and large splitting of 3d-states of Ti show that the down spin potential is more effective than up spin. Finally, the results of optical parameters such as complex dielectric constant ε (u), refractive index n (u), normal incident reflectivity R (u), absorption coefficient ɑ (u), optical conductivity s (u) and optical loss factor L (u) are discussed in the energy range 0e14 eV. Moreover, we have verified the Penn's model by showing the inverse relation between the static dielectric constant and the optical band gap. The direct relation between static dielectric constant and static refractive index has been observed by increasing the composition of Ti. The calculated parameters provide valuable theoretical information for optical and spintronics device applications.

The Removal of Offshore Installation in Indonesian National Regulation

        Abdul Maasba Magassing,Farida Patittingi,Sabir Alwy,Ruslan Hambali,Juajir Sumardi,M. Hendrapati,Kadarudin 이준국제법연구원 2018 Journal of East Asia and International Law Vol.11 No.1

An offshore installation is built or installed for the purposes of exploration and exploitation in any part of the sea. The offshore installations that are presently in existence reflect great scientific progress in the field of marine resources. However, they become a source of concern when they are no longer in use. Due to the potential to disrupt activities conducted around their location, they interfere with navigational safety. Therefore, it is important to remove such installations. Their removal should be based on the provisions of the IMO Guidelines and Standards. Indonesia is a coastal State and should adhere to the above mentioned guidelines and standard in designing policies and regulations.

Fatigue life of stainless steel 304 enhancement by addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)

Rizwanulhaque Syed,Wei Jiang,Cunshan Wang,M. Iqbal Sabir 대한기계학회 2015 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.29 No.1

Stainless steel is among the most widely used industrial materials. In particular, stainless steel 304 (304SS) is the most used materialgrade. To increase the utilization of any industrial material, its fatigue life should be optimized. In this work, the fatigue life of 304SS wasenhanced by the addition of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Moreover, the incorporation of a small amount of MWCNTsincreased the fatigue life of 304SS. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD)results showed that the suppression of fatigue crack growth rate was caused by CNT deposition at the crack tip. CNTs were entangledwith each other, thereby resulting in finer grain size. The XRD diffractograms of the 304SS treated area peak showed that the microstructureconsisted of austenite and carbon.
